  • Conventional railroad roadbeds constructed with soils can easily deteriorate with time due to the increase of repeated traffic loading, increase of train speed, built-up of ground water on the roadbed and decrease of permeability in the roadbed layer, etc. In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale roadbed tests and numerical analysis. It was found that the reinforced roadbed with crushed stone had less elastic and plastic vertical displacement(settlement) than general soil roadbed regardless of the number of loading cycles. It was also found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the displacement of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of subgrade reaction modulus. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same subgrade reaction modulus also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed. However, the subgrade reaction modulus is a more important factor to the total plastic displacement of the track than the thickness of the crushed stone roadbed.

  • This study is to prove the efficiency of geo-synthetics on the crushed stone layer by experiments. The strength of PET mat as reinforcing soft ground was verified through the loading experiments. Also, PP mat was used to protect the blockage of crushed stone layer by the filled soil, whose efficiency was examined according to loading and infiltration conditions. The crushed stones were penetrated into clay layer if the PET mat was removed, which was verified by loading experiments. In addition, the cohesioness of soil without PP mat made the blockage of stone layer easily, which reduced the infiltration capacity by about 98%.

  • In this study, the effect of ground improvement was to be verified by granular compaction pile from the ground reclaimed with Fly Ash landfill site. The depth and strength parameters of the Fly ash layer was determined using the ground investigation and cone penetration test. And the STONE C program was used to predict the strength parameter, bearing capacity and settlement of the improved ground. As a result of the plate bearing test, the bearing capacity of improvement ground was higher than the design load and the settlement was smaller than the reference value. After the construction, the improvement effect by the cone penetration test was confirmed. The cone penetration resistance value($q_c$) increased by 250% to 500% and the effect was excellent.

  • A series of shaking table tests were conducted to estimate the seismic performance of soft ground deposits improved by stone column. The amplification of acceleration, shear strain, and shear wave velocity were evaluated to compare the seismic response of unimproved ground deposits with that of improved ground deposits. From the test results, it was shown that the stone column can prevent large shear deformation in ground deposits. However, it was also found that the acceleration of improved ground deposits may be amplified more than that of unimproved ground deposits when it was subjected to short periodic seismic wave. The results suggest that it is necessary to perform the ground response analysis with model experiments for both unimproved and improved ground deposits to evaluate the effect of stone column on the seismic performance of improved ground deposits.

  • In this paper, connection strength between facing block and tie-bar was investigated through experimental study with varying in-fill material such as concrete, soil and crushed stone. Also, connection strength between anchor block and tie-bar was investigated with varying in-fill material. According to the experimental results, in case of using in-fill concrete, connection strength between facing block and tie-bar was larger than allowable tension load of tie-bar. Whereas in case of using in-fill soil or crushed stone, connection strength between facing block and tie-bar was less or similiar to allowable tension load of tie-bar. Connection strength between anchor block and tie-bar for which crushed stone was used as in-fill material, was larger than allowable tension load of tie-bar.

  • Among soft ground treatment methods with granular soil used in domestic, the sand compaction pile method has been utilized greatly, but, as a result of exhaustion of sand and increase of unit cost, the necessity of an alternative method is suggested. In this study, the static load tests for crushed-stone compaction piles which were constructed on test field were performed. Based on test results, stress concentration ratios between the crushed-stone compaction pile and the soft ground were investigated and estimated. At loading pressure, settlement showed decreasing tendency as replacement rate increases. At replacement rate of 20%, yield pressure was smaller but, at replacement rates of 30% and 40%, settlement and yield pressure were similar. The stress concentration ratio was within the range of 1.7 to 3.0 and it was higher as replacement rate increased.

  • In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.

  • Stone column is a soil improvement method and can be applicable for loose sand or weak cohesive soil. Since the lack of sand, stone column seems one of the most adaptable approach for poor ground as a soil improvement technique. However, this method was not studied for practical application. In this paper, the bearing capacity of single stone column at the Gaduk, Ulsan and Gwangyang under the bulging and general shear failure mode were compared with those of the suggested formulas. Especially, a test result of single stone column at the Busan area by static load was compared with the bearing capacity of suggested formulas. The analysis results showed that there were not much bearing capacity differences among those suggested bearing capacity formulas. However, the bearing capacity by static load test was almost double of those with suggested formula. The result also showed that the undrained shear strength was the most important parameter for the bearing capacity estimation of stone column.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of polymer concrete using unsaturated polyester resin, initiator, heavy calcium carbonate, crushed gravel, recycled coarse aggregate, silica sand and recycled fine aggregate. The unit weight, compressive strength, flexural strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity were decreased with increasing the content of recycled aggregate. The unit weight, compressive strength, flexural strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity were showed in $2,127{\sim}2,239kg/m^3$, 80.5~88.3MPa, 19.2~21.5MPa and $254{\times}10^2{\sim}288{\times}10^2MPa$ at the curing age 7 days, respectively. Therefore, these recycled aggregate can be used for polymer concrete.

  • In this study, the acceleration changes of the surrounding ground when crushed stones were installed in a strip-type were analyzed using the 1-G shaking table test. The ground was constructed from clay, and the foundation was installed using crushed stone of strip-type form. The response acceleration and response spectrum for various input seismic motions were analyzed. The change in acceleration was examined according to the adjacent distance to the strip-type crushed stone foundation. In the Hachinohe seismic motion results, there was no significant decrease in acceleration, but the maximum response acceleration for the two seismic motions was inversely proportional to the distance from the crushed stone foundation. As a result of the response spectrum analysis, the attenuation period in the long period and the short period input wave were different from each other, and the change in response spectrum affected the maximum acceleration value. As the distance from the crushed stone foundation was increased, the attenuation was larger in the period between 0.08 and 0.5 sec in the Hachinohe seismic motion, the attenuation was larger in the period of less than 0.2 seconds in the Northridge seismic motion.
