RC slab bridges account for the largest portion of deteriorated bridges in Korea. However, most RC slabs are not included in the first and second classes of bridges, which are subject to bridge safety management and maintenance. The highest damaged components in highway bridges are the subsidiary facilities including expansion joints and bearings. In particular, leakage through expansion joints causes deterioration and cracks of concrete and exposure of reinforced bars. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of adhesion damage at expansion joints on the response of the deck in RC slab bridges. When the spacing between the expansion joints at both ends was closely adhered, cracks occurred in the concrete at both ends of the deck due to the resistance rigidity at the expansion joints. Based on the response results, the correlation analysis between displacements in the longitudinal direction of the expansion joint and concrete stress at both ends of the deck for each damage scenario was performed to investigate the effect of the occurrence of damage on the bridge behavior. When expansion joint devices at both sides were damaged, the correlation between displacement and stress showed a low correlation of 0.18 when the vehicles proceeded along all the lanes. Compared with those in the intact state, the deflections of the deck in the damaged case at both sides showed a low correlation of 0.34 to 0.53 while the vehicle passed and 0.17 to 0.43 after the vehicle passed. This means that the occurrence of cracks in the ends of concrete changed the behavior of the deck. Therefore, data-deriven damage detection could be developed to manage the damage to expansion joints that cause damage and deterioration of the deck.

In this paper presented is the reliability analysis of a double skinned hull structure against the ultimate bending moment and fatigue strength under longitudinal bending. The ultimate bending strength is obtained through the beam-column approach in which the load-end shortening curves(stress-strain curves) of stiffened plates under mini-axial compression are derived using the concept of plastic hinge collapse. The fatigue damage only is considered as fatigue failure for which the Miner's damage rule is employed. Assessed are fatigue reliability for the possible joint types found at deck structure. Also included is the reliability analysis of a series system of which elements are ultimate and fatigue failure.

In this paper, conventional z-pinning technology which can be used to reinforce inter-laminar property of laminated composites is introduced and new z-pinning technique recently proposed by author is also introduced. On some trial specimens manufactured by the new z-pinning technique, the low-velocity impact test was performed and impact damage area was measured. Similar impact test was performed on normal composite laminate specimens and those test results were compared to each other. Consequently, it can be seen that the new z-pinning technique is more useful in applying to mass production of z-pinned composite laminate structures than the conventional techniques and some clear improvement on impact resistance of z-pinned composite laminates manufactured by the new z-pinning technique is observed.

The enhancement of the service life of damaged or cracked structures is a major issue for researchers and engineers. The hierarchic void element based on the integrals of Legendre polynomials is used to characterize the fracture behaviour of unpatched crack as well as repaired crack with bonded composite patches by computing the stress intensity factors and stress contours at the crack tip. Since the equivalent single layer approach is adopted in this study, the proposed element is necessary to represent a discontinuous crack part as a continuum body with zero stiffness. Thus the aspect ratio of this element to represent the crack should be extremely slender. The sensitivity of numerical solution with respect to energy release rate, displacement and stress has been tested to show the robustness of zero stiffness element as the aspect ratio is increased up to 2000. The stiffness derivative method and displacement extrapolation method have been applied to calculate the stress intensity factors of Mode I problem. It is noted that the proposed hierarchical void element can be one of alternatives to analyze the patched crack problems.
In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subjected to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, acoustic emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. The damage process of SOP FML was divided by three parts, i.e., crack initiation, crack propagation, and penetration. The AE characteristics during crack initiation show that the micro crack is initiated at lower ply of the plate, then propagate along the thickness of the plate with creating tiber debonding. The crack grow along the fiber direction with occurring 60∼80dB AE signal. During the penetration, the fiber breakage was observed. As fiber orientation increases, talc fiber breakage occurs more frequently. The AE signal behaviors support these results. Cumulative AE counts could well predict crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for the prediction of damage failure mode.

This experimental study presents the fatigue evaluation of a precast deck connected using Ultra-High Performance, Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). Four types of two identical large-scale specimens were fabricated with simplified splice rebar details which had a short splice length of ten times rebar diameter. The flexural behavior of each type of specimens until failure was investigated and fatigue behavior of the same type of specimens was then evaluated using two-million cyclic loading. In the flexural tests, tensile rebars exhibited the deformation exceeding yielding strain but failure mode related to the splice details was not observed in spite of such a short splice length. In the fatigue tests, damage was not appreciably accumulated by the cyclic loading except initial flexural cracks and the stress variations in tensile rebars was less than the allowable stress range. These experimental results demonstrate that all types of specimens exhibited acceptable fatigue performance and indicate that enhanced mechanical properties of ultra-high performance material permits to use a simplified splice details along with short joint width.

Earthquake damage of viaduct bridge of railroad may give rise to social loss due to transport restrictions greater than cost of structural recovery. Therefore, viaduct bridge of railroad should have ensure adequate seismic performance. But, results of seismic performance evaluation, many of seismic retrofit was required. In this study, five scale models of columns were made and four of them were reinforced by HT-A(HyperTex & perforate Aluminum) which is improved than existing method. Testing the columns by constant axial load and cyclic lateral displacements, seismic performance of columns has been verified from the result of evaluating the stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity.
Recently, the construction industry commonly uses FRP as a reinforcement material because of its material advantages. FRP attached reinforcement has various advantages such as high strength, stiffness, excellent durability and construction practicability comparing to its weight. However, external attachment of FRP is water-tighted with low water permeable material, not draining water, probably causing damages on a permanent structure. The study manufactured it through pultrusion and examined GP(glass fiber panel) of which material-mechanical properties are almost same as the existing FRP but durability and attachment performance are better by stationary experiments, testing load-deflection curve, destruction types and load-deflection relation under repetitive loading test. As a result of 2,000,000 fatigue tests, it did not result in the destruction and showed excellent permanent attachment and durability as it displays significantly low compressive strain of concrete.

Twin-hulls frequently incur structural damage at connecting members between the hull and deck induced by pitching motions during voyages. so, reasonable reinforcement is necessary around vulnerable spots such as corner knuckle, the chine bottom and inner hull. Since guidelines for structural design are not clear, engineers often respond by reinforcing plate thickness, changing stiffener sizes and reducing frame spacing, etc. These members constitute about 85 % of the longitudinal dimensions of the ship, so it is necessary to locally reinforce certain points to minimize weight stress, and also solve construction cost problems while securing the freeboard margin. Therefore, we developed a new program by analyzing the structural design procedures for the twin car-ferries based on Korean Register of Shipping (KR) High Speed Craft Rules, identifying items that need to be added. In order to ensure the reliability of buckling estimations for procedures and design programs, we conducted a comparative study with other standards and confirmed that differences were minimal.
The present Common Structural Rules for double hull oil tanker is not included the residual strength, which is one of the functional requirements in design part of Goal-based new ship construction standards (GBS). The GBS will be enforced after July 1, 2016. The requirement related residual strength has the goal to build safe ship even if she has the specified damages due to marine accidents including collision and grounding. In order to assess the residual strength based on risk for structural damages according to GBS, tons of nonlinear FE analysis work taking into account various types of damage will be needed. The Smith's method, a kind of simplified method for the strength analysis is very useful for this purpose. In this paper, the residual strength assessments based on ultimate strength using Smith's method were carried out. The objected ship is VLCC with stranding damage in bottom structures. Also, the results were compared with that of nonlinear FE analysis using three cargo hold model.
