  • This paper describes the fundamental research of hybrid-propellant rocket system focusing the flight. The performance of the hybrid-propellant rocket system (using the background of lab-scale tests) for a small-scale launch vehicle could have been validated by static thrust tests and flight tests. Based on this system, it was found that hybrid rocket propulsion system was available in an application to a launch vehicle system.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop basic technology of hybrid rocket vehicle by constructed and launched. This small hybrid rocket using HDPE/LN2O and Aluminium steel for its body (weight : 12.5 kg, diameter : 114 mm, height : 1.8 m) was designed. The fuel grain and injector were designed for 50 kgf thrust and burning time 2.5 sec. This rocket was loaded the data acquisition device for obtaining data of pressure and velocity during its flying and equiped an automatic ejector system using spring/motor and timer to collect the rocket more safely after launching. It was launched successfully, but found some problem that the rocket's weight was heavier than expected and the thrust was not enough to reach the designed altitude and analyzed its flight path way.

  • The solid rocket interacts circumscriptively in terms of is many more than liquid rocket. It is uncontrollable than liquid rocket because all part of combustion is decided such as Mixture ratio of propellant, burning time and area. However, production cost is cheap and because authoritativeness security can be easy and enlarge the early speed that follow thrust-to-weight ratio, it is used comprehensively by small size rocket. Considered about nozzle cooling to control phenomenon that burn by thermal conduction in interior wall of nozzle that follow in thrust increase of solid rocket and erosion phenomenon by combustion gas of high speed.

  • This work is to observe combustion characteristics depending on variation of the solid propellent grain configuration. The LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) enables adjusting the thrust by controling the required fuel mass glow, but the SRM(Solid Rocket Motor)is not easy to adjust th thrust due to the difficulty of th fuel flow control by its combustion behavior even its configuration is simple. This difficulty can be partly solved by changing th size or the configuration of the propellant grain. In this study a proper grain configuration of a small solid rocket is selected through both the theoretical design and the experimental tests.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate critical load, which can influence on flight path of a small slender body rocket, due to external forces such as thrust, drag and weight. The critical load was firstly obtained from Euler column equation, and compared with analysis results using Finite Element Method to evaluate the theoretical critical load.

  • A high altitude test facility which includes supersonic diffuser and ejector has been developed to simulate atmospheric pressure at 25 km using a 500 N class small scale liquid rocket engine. Also high altitude simulation test for the small scale liquid rocket engine was performed to verify the facility's performance. The experimental facility consists of high altitude simulation device, propellants supply system and coolant supply system. Low pressure condition corresponding to about 27 km(0.021 bar) altitude atmosphere was successfully simulated and a small scale liquid rocket engine thrust level was confirmed at the simulated condition by the high altitude test facility verification test.

  • Test Facility for hot firing test of small size liquid rocket engine has been developed to research the cooing characteristics of kerosene for cylinder part especially. Propellants for the tests are kerosene and liquid oxygen as fuel and oxidizer respectively and they are fed by gaseous nitrogen. The engine components used hot firing test except for cylinder are cooled by tap-water. Valves for supply of propellants and coolants are controlled by pneumatically. System control and data recording are conducted automatically.

  • A computational analysis of nozzle flow characteristics and plume structure using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model was conducted to examine performance of the supersonic nozzle employed in a small liquid-rocket engine for ground firing test. Computed results and experimental outcome of 2-D converging-diverging nozzle flow were compared for verifying the computational capability as well as the turbulence model validity. Numerical computations of 2-D axisymmetric nozzle flow was carried out with the selected model. As a result, flow separation with backflow appeared around the nozzle exit. This investigation was reported as a background data for the optimal nozzle design of small liquid-propellant rocket engine for ground test.
