  • Small sized engine test stand has been built up and modified to measure the engine performance for 15g class small UAV propulsion systems. An engine performance standard test stand was developed in order to validate the prediction performance and to shoot trobles. The performance data were measured and analyzed for the newly developed gasoline engine.

  • This paper reports the development trend of small fuel cell unmanned aerial vehicles. Development method of a fuel cell propulsion system for small unmanned aerial vehicles is proposed and discussed, such as the lightweight fuel cell stack development, liquid fuel-based hydrogen storage/generation, and fuel cell system technology.

  • As a popularization of small UAS to have improved flight performance and easiness of controlling, the UAS industry is increased and also small UAS is to be a new threat for airspace security of national strategic infrastructure. Rising the new threat makes the negative side effect of small UAS operation. This phenomena brought to new R&D needs "defense system" for small UAS/UAV - called Anti-Drone. The paper addressed case study of defects, accidents and threats by small UAS/UAV as world wide level, and research and development trend of UAS defense system as each technical category - CONOP (Concept of Operation), identification/recognition method and control/supremacy techniques. As a result, this suggests the direction what and where drone defense system should be applied first and required for Korean society in the view of society system (regime) and a point of view for minimizing side effect as UAS popularization.

  • 최근 많은 분야에 무인시스템이 도입되고 있다. 초기에는 산업분야에서 인간이 하기 힘들거나 위험한 작업을 대신하는 단순 반복적인 자동화기술이 대부분이었으나, 최근에는 전자통신 기술발달에 힘입어 무인자동차, 무인항공기, 무인잠수정, 무인선박 등이 연구 개발되고 있다. 본연구에서는 자율형 소형무인선을 개발하고자 하였으며, 이와 관련하여 인터넷기반의 무선통신제어, 동력 추진 조타 냉각시스템, GPS 영상 헤딩센서 등 센싱시스템, 자율운항을 위한 제어기설계, GUI 등을 연구하였다. 아울러, 해상실험을 통해 유효성을 검증하였다.

Design of Decentralized Guidance Algorithm for Swarm Flight of Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (고정익 소형무인기 군집비행을 위한 분산형 유도 알고리듬 설계)

  • This paper presents a decentralized guidance algorithm for swarm flight of fixed-wing UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). Considering swarm flight missions, we assume four representative swarm tasks: gathering, loitering, waypoint/path following, and individual task. Those tasks require several distinct maneuvers such as path following, flocking, and collision avoidance. In order to deal with the required maneuvers, this paper proposes an integrated guidance algorithm based on vector field, augmented Cucker-Smale model, and potential field methods. Integrated guidance command is synthesized with heuristic weights designed for each guidance method. The proposed algorithm is verified through flight tests using up to 19 small fixed-wing UAVs.

  • Recently popularized drone technologies have revealed that low-cost small unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) can be a significant threat to prevailing power by operating in group or in swarms. Researchers in many countries have tried to utilize integrated swarm unmanned aerial system(SUAS) in the battlefield. Agency for Defense Development also identified four core technologies in developing SUAS: swarm control, swarm network, swarm information, and swarm collaboration, and the authors started researches on swarm control and network technologies in order to be able to operate vehicle platforms as the first stage. This paper introduces design and integration of SUAS consisting of small fixed-wing UAVs, swarm control and network algorithms, a ground control system, and a launcher, with which swarm control and network technologies have been verified by flight tests. 19 fixed-wing UAVs succeeded in swarm flight in the final flight test for the first time as a domestic research.

Target Level of Safety Analysis in Airworthiness Certification for Military UAV (군용무인기의 감항인증 목표안전수준 분석)

  • Airworthiness certification of military aircraft is a government's certification that it must have airworthiness and ability to demonstrate its requested function and performance. NATO released STANAG-4671 to establish the minimum airworthiness requirements for UAVs between 150kg and 20,000kg MTOW in 2009. Up to now, there are no clear airworthiness certification criteria and guideline for small UAV which is less than 150kg. STANAG-4671 is used for military UAV airworthiness certification in Korea as Other Airworthiness Certification Criteria. However, since STANAG-4671 requires the same Target Level of Safety without regard to MTOW, excessive Target Level of Safety or design requirements could be applied to relatively small-medium UAV. In this paper, classification and criteria of airworthiness certification for military UAV were investigated and a Target Level of Safety was analyzed based on MTOW using ground victim criteria.

  • In this paper, we present the results of a developed LTE/Wi-Fi-based video transmission system which can be applied in small unmanned aerial vehicles of 25kg or less. The developed video transmission system comprised of airborne datalink terminal, ground datalink terminal, and used LTE and Wi-Fi wireless data communication technologies to transmit videos of resolution higher than HD (720p/30fps, 1080p/30fps) taken by small UAV. The airborne device is designed to efficiently transmit real-time streaming video through the incorporation of H.264 video processing board. Ground tests and evaluation indicated the possibility of the developed system to transmit real-time videos from close distance in regards to non-line-of-sight area.

  • As Unmanned Aerial Vehicles technology has been widespread, various types of unmanned aircraft and mission equipment have been developed in line with mission diversification. Especially in Korea, small unmanned aerial vehicles have been actively developed. In addition, flight control system and mission equipment interface system for effective control of small unmanned aerial vehicles, efficient communication system configuration and operation for transmission to ground operated systems by processing data are required. This paper addresses efficient system structure and operation of communication equipment for missions and control of small unmanned aerial vehicles.

Minimum Separation Distance Calculation for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using Flight Simulation (비행 시뮬레이션을 이용한 소형 무인항공기의 최소 분리 거리 산출)

  • The utilization of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has expanded into both military and civilian domains, increasing the necessity for research to ensure operational safety and the efficient utilization of airspace. In this study, the calculation of minimum separation distances for the safe operation of small UAVs at low altitudes was conducted. The determination of minimum separation distances requires a comprehensive analysis of the total system errors associated with small UAVs, necessitating sensitivity analysis to identify key factors contributing to flight technology errors. Flight data for small UAVs were acquired by integrating the control system of an actual small UAV with a flight simulation program. Based on this data, operational scenarios for small UAVs were established, and the minimum separation distances for each scenario were calculated. This research contributes to proposing methods for utilizing calculated minimum separation distances as crucial parameters for ensuring the safe operation of small unmanned aerial vehicles in real-world scenarios.
