An Investigation into Improving the Quality of Modern Weapon System Software Products: a Case Study (현대 무기체계 소프트웨어 개발 사례 분석을 통한 품질개선 방안에 대한 연구)

  • As modern weapon systems have evolved into embedded software systems, the capability to develop, install, and maintain high-quality software products is becoming increasingly valuable in today's competitive aerospace and defense industry. It is desirable, especially for government-contracted projects whose end-users are military personnel, that specific types of software quality elements are assured early during product development; namely, functionality and usability. Motivated by this need to approach improving software quality from a user's perspective, this paper presents a case study that analyzes system-level software integration testing results for a weapon system indigenously developed in the Republic of Korea. Quantitative data, such as software defect ratios and configuration change rates, are computed to observe meaningful trends with respect to functionality - represented by tests designed to verify the system's electrical signal interfaces - and usability, which is evaluated in terms of how often the initial human-computer interface had to be re-designed. Insights gained from these exercises are subsequently presented as a set of "lessons learned" to take into account when developing new software items for complex weapon systems.

  • Generally EPC management system was simply management concept through the normal S/W. Our LNG Plant R&D Center wanted to the excellent management system from the S/W. So We developed the R&D management S/W and EPC management S/W Built in the Microsoft Project Server. Our system made to the customer Requirements. It was just User Interface protocol. But User Interface has more Weak position, because it makes from the MS Project Servers. Ms Projector server make easy to treat the project on the WBS. EPC parts mixed WBS and normally Ms SQL Database. It has very complicated Structures. Now We planed to make the general Database and Ms Project Server, It' means to the S/W Developer and Schedule Manager ability. We will successfully integrate R&D management system and EPC system and other softwares.

Development of Integrated Design and Optimization Software for the High Temperature Furnace Design (초고온 진공로 통합설계 최적화 소프트웨어 개발)

  • High temperature vacuum furnaces or high standard electric furnaces demand high technology level and high production cost. Therefore, an iterative design process and the optimization approach under integrated computing environment are required to reduce the development risk. Moreover, it also required to develop an integrated design software that can manage the centralized database system between factory and design department, and the automated furnace design and analysis. The developed software is dedicated to the development of the vacuum (electric) furnaces. Based on the distribute middleware system, the GUI module, the CAD module, the thermal analysis module and the optimization module are integrated. For the DBMS, Microsoft Access is employed, the GUI is developed using Visual Basic language, and AutoCAD is utilized for the configuration design. By investigating the analysis code interface, the analysis and optimization process, and the data communication method, the overall system architecture, the method to integrate the optimizer and ana lysis codes, and the method to manage the data flow are proposed and verified through the optimal furnace design.

  • Many accidents occur on the oceans. Accidents involving ships can cause enormous damage. When an accident occurs, the cost of environmental restoration can bankrupt even a top-ranked international company. The potential damages resulting from ship accidents have resulted in many international agreements such as MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM Code, etc. The viability of damaged ships has become more and more important. A damaged ship's viability and cargo safety can be improved by a safety assessment design procedure. We consider th£ shipbuilding industry's distributed characteristics to define a safety assessment system with software engineering-based requirements analysis. We used a distributed network-based simulation method (HLA - High level architecture), because of ease of reuse and expansion of existing components to other situations, and because it is a military standard. HLA is the standard for distributed network-based simulation in many countries including the United States, Canada, Israel, and Korea. The paper describes research to develop a prototype of a network-based safety assessment simulation system by software engineering based analysis.

Risk Management and Assessment Methodology in System Design (위험관리 프로세서와 평가의 새로운 접근)

  • Recently, risk management is a very important issue in many industrial applications. This paper describes a general structure for risk management and suggests a new risk assessment methodology. In risk management applications of financial or insurance industries, there are many methodologies developed for practical use. However, areas for improvement exist to facilitate the application of the methods. Two major risk assessment methodologies have been developed and widely applied in system engineering. One is in its original development application from aerospace and defense industry, and the other was developed in applied software engineering. In a large and complicated system development application, an effective risk management can reduce total development cost as well as uncertainty in achieving project goals of schedule and performance.

  • As part of the National Disaster Management Research Institute's Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects for transferring new technologies in the field of disaster-safety management, a flood forecasting and warning system was established in 2019 targeting the Borikhan in the Namxan River Basin in Bolikhamxai Province, Laos. In the target area, which is an ungauged small and medium river basin, observation stations for real-time monitoring of rainfall and runoff and alarm stations were installed, and a software that performs real-time data management and flood forecasting and warning functions was also developed. In order to establish a flood warning standard and develop a nomograph for flood prediction, hydraulic and hydrological analysis was performed based on the 30-year annual maximum daily rainfall data and river morphology survey results in the target area. This paper introduces the process and methodology used in this study, and presents the results of the system's applicability review based on the data observed and collected in 2020 after system installation.

  • In this study, we have established the design techniques, with which we can design and evaluate performance of blades on a horizontal axis current turbine, by application of blade element momentum theory considering the blade tip's loss model, and finally developed the domestic software(MCT-blade V2.0). We have designed and evaluated performance of blades for the 2MW class by using of the software, and confirmed its calculation results from BEMT by comparing those results from commercial code of ANSYS FLUENT. In a state of rated velocity 2.5m/s, the mechanical power from BEMT is calculated as 2,121kW, which is considered to satisfy the electrical power, but the value from CFD is calculated as 1,901kW, which is considered a little deficient for the target output.

  • s programming education becomes more important in recent years, it is necessary to learn how the source code written by students reflects Object-Oriented(OO) concepts. We present a tool called the Round-Trip Translator(RTT) that transforms the Unified Modeling Language(UML) class diagram and Java source code to provide a web-based environment that provides real-time synchronization of UML and source code. RTT was created by improving existing RTE and is a tool for students who are learning OO concepts to understand how their UML or source code reflects the concepts that user intended. This study compares the efficiency and user- friendliness of RTT with the existing Round-Trip Engineering-based tools. The results show that students have improved understanding of OO concepts through UML and source code translation by using the RTT. We also found out that students were satisfied with the use of the RTT, which provides more efficient and convenient user interface than the existing tools.

  • In vessels, various communication systems are now working with different vendor-specific ways, which are apt to cause the inter-operability problems. That, of course, leads to needs of standardization of communication network systems for vessels. The e-navigation system introduced by IMO also takes the standardization process as expected. In this paper, a 4S multiple media communication switching server for seamless communications among existing media for vessels is introduced, and the development of a information exchange software for the sever and its functionality verification results are presented as well.

  • IT 제품 및 시스템의 보안성 평가를 위한 국제표준(ISO/IEC15408)인 공통평가기준(CC)은 해당 평가 보증등급(EAL, Evaluation Assurance Level)의 요구사항에 따라 평가대상 제품(TOE, Target of Evaluation), 제품의 개발 및 운영 문서를 포함하는 평가제출물을 요구하고 있다. 개발자가 공통평가기준을 적용하여 제품의 보안성을 개선하고 성공적으로 평가인증서를 받기 위해서는 상당한 노력이 요구된다. 대부분의 개발자는 제품 개발 완료 후 제품의 보안성을 검토하고 평가를 준비하므로 리엔지니어링 등 추가적인 비용과 시간을 투입해야 하는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 BSD(Berkeley Software Distributions) 4.4 기반의 운영체제인 MTOS(Mitretek)를 개발한 사례를 통하여 개발과정과 요구사항 및 평가준비를 위한 평가제출물 작성과의 연계성을 제시하였다. 개발자는 본 논문에서 제시한 연계성을 활용하여 소프트웨어 제품의 개발과정에 공통평가기준을 적용하여 제품의 보안성을 제고하고 보안성 평가를 준비하는데 시간과 노력을 절감할 수 있다.
