  • Semiparametric and nonparametric small area estimations have been studied to overcome a large variance due to a small sample size allocated in a small area. In this study, we investigate semiparametric and nonparametric mixed effect small area estimators using penalized spline and kernel smoothing methods respectively and compare their performances using labor statistics.

  • An approach widely used for small area estimation is based on linear mixed models. However, when the functional form of the relationship between the response and the input variables is not linear, it may lead to biased estimators of the small area parameters. In this paper we propose M-quantile kernel regression for small area mean estimation allowing nonlinearities in the relationship between the response and the input variables. Numerical studies are presented that show the sample properties of the proposed estimation method.

  • Many researches have been devoted to the small area estimation related with the area level statistics. Almost all of the small area estimation methods are derived based on minimization of mean squared error(MSE). Recently Hwang and Shin (2008) suggested an alternative small area estimation method by minimizing mean squared percentage error. In this paper we apply this small area estimation method to the labor statistics, especially monthly wages by a branch area of labor department. The Monthly Labor Survey data (2007) is used for analysis and comparison of these methods.

  • Small area estimation is a statistical inference method to overcome large variance due to a small sample size allocated in a small area. A shrinkage estimator obtained by minimizing relative error(RE) instead of MSE has been suggested. The estimator takes advantage of good interpretation when the data range is large. A semiparametric estimator is also studied for small area estimation. In this study, we suggest a semiparametric shrinkage small area estimator and compare small area estimators using labor statistics.

  • When forming the ceramic body with plastic mass, it is needed that a quantitative testing method for plasticity, not only to evaluate the plasticity of a body, but also to control it within limits. Although many testing instruments were introduced, but no handy testing instrument for the plasticity quantitatively has been developed. In this study, modified vicat needle was designed to handily evaluate the plasicity of extruding bodies for honeycomb. The plasticity of three plastic masses was tested with this equipment. Columned needle with 2 mm diameter was adopted to measure the resistance for deformation and spherical needle with 9.5 mm diameter was adopted to measure the amount of deformation before cracking. The plasticity of three tested bodies were clearly distinguished quantitatively each other and the testing results were helpful to evaluated the workability of theses bodies. Probably, it is possible to evaluate the plasticity of various ceramic bodies with this apparatus, if suitable diameters of columns and spheres are selected.

  • Small area estimation is becoming important in survey sampling due to a growing demand for reliable small area statistics. In estimating means, totals, and other parameters for small areas of a finite population, samplie sizes for small areas are typically small because the overall sample size is usually determined to provide specific accuracy at a much higher level of aggregation than that of small area. The usual direct estimators that use the only information which is gotten from the sample in a given small area provide unreliable estimates. However, indirect estimators utilize the information from the areas related with a given small area, that is, borrow strength from other related areas, and so give more accurate estimates than direct estimators. In this paper we investigate small area estimation methods such as synthetic, composite and empirical best linear unbiased prediction estimator, and apply them to real domestic data which is from the Survey of Hotels and Restaurants in In-Chon as of 1996 and then evaluate the performance of these methods by measuring average squared errors. This evaluation shows that indirect estimators, which are small area estimation methods, are more efficient than direct estimator.

  • SMRs (standardized mortality rates) for major diseases, accidents, cancer are considered in small areas of administrative units such as Eup/Myeon/Dong from years 2005 to 2008. Due to small sample issue in small areas, the precision of directly estimated crude SMR for each area can be low. In this study, we consider the HGLM (hierarchical generalized linear model) with MRF (Markov random field) to account for the spatial correlations among the small areas. The effects of covariates for cause of mortality by Dongs in Seoul and disease maps based on the estimated SMR are presented. The results suggest how we analyze and interpret the difference in mortalities by small areas such as Dongs by revealing the spatial patterns.

  • Effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on seasonal changes of nutrient content in tree components, and retranslocation N and P in foliage and twig were determined in adjacent 41-year-old plantations of Pinus rigida Miller and Larix kaempferi Gordon on a similar soil in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province. In general, foliage N and P concentrations of L kaempferi were significantly higher than current and 1-year-old foliages of P. rigida. N and P concentrations were higher in foliage than in twigs for both tree species. However, there were no significant differences in foliage and twig N and P concentrations with ages. Significant seasonal differences in foliage and twig N and P concentrations were observed for both tree species because of nutrient retranslocation. Foliage nutrient concentrations were highest in the mid-growing season and lowest in autumn, whereas twig nutrient concnetrations have gradually increased since July. These seasonal trends indicated nutrient retranslocation from foliage into twigs before foliage senescence. However, there were no significant changes in foliage and twig nutrient retranslocation, and no consistent patterns in foliage and twig nutrient retranslocation following N and P fertilizer additions. No significant changes in nutrient retranslocation between different foliage and twig ages were observed following fertilization.

  • Porcelain (white ware, celadon ware) coated with a ferrous sulfate and ferrous/cobalt sulfate was sintered at 1250℃. The specimens were investigated by HR-XRD, FE-SEM, HR-EDS, and UV-vis spectrophotometer. Through X-ray rietveld quantitative analysis, quartz and mullite were found to be the main phases for white ware, and mullite and plagioclase were found to be the main phases for celadon ware. When the pigment of ferrous/cobalt sulfate was applied, were identified as an andradite phase for celadon ware and a spinel phase for the white ware, and the amorphous phase, respectively. The L* value, which was the brightness of the specimen, was 72.01, 60.92 for white ware and celadon ware, respectively. The ferrous and ferrous/cobalt pigment coated porcelain had L* values of 44.89, 52.27 for white ware and celadon ware, respectively; with a* values of 2.12, 1.40, an d at b* values of 1.45 and 13.79. As for the color of the specimens, it was found that the L* value was greatly affected by the white ware, and the b* value differed greatly depending on the clay. It was thought to be closely related to the production of the secondary phase such as Fe2O3 and andradite phase produced in the surface layer.
