  • In this paper, the acoustic performance of an absorptive silencer was enhanced by optimizing an arrangement of multi-layered absorbing materials. The acoustic performance of the silencer was evaluated through transmission loss, and finite element method-based numerical analysis program was employed to calculate the transmission loss. Polyurethane, a porous elastic material frequently used in absorptive silencers, was employed as the absorbing material. The Biot-Allard model was applied, assuming that air is filled inside the polyurethane. By setting the frequency range of interest up to the 2 kHz and the acoustic performance affecting properties of the absorbing materials were investigated when it was composed as a single layer. And the acoustic performance of the silencers with the single and multi-layered absorbing materials was compared with each other based on polyurethane material properties. Subsequently, the arrangement of the absorbing materials was optimized by applying the Nelder-Mead method. The results demonstrated that the average transmission loss improved compared to the single-layered absorptive silencer.

  • To mitigate excessive noise from highways, and high speed rail road, it is often necessary to construct a noise barrier. Absorptive barroer attenuation solution is obtained for the problem of diffration of a plane wave sound source by a semi-infinite plane. A finite region in the vicinity of the edge has an highly absorbing boundary condition ; the remaining portion of the half plane is rigid. The problem which is solved is a mathematical model for a hard barrier with an absorbing edge. If the wavelength of the sound is much smaller than the length scale associated with the barrier, the diffraction process is governed to all intents and purpose by the solution to a standard problem of diffraction by a semi-infinite hard plane with an absorbent edge. It is concluded that the absorbing material that comprises the edge need only be of the order of a wavelength long to have approximately the same effect, on the sound attenuation in the shadow side of the barrier. Traffic noise is composed of thousands of sources with varying frequency content. To simplify noise predictions when barriers are present, an effective frequency of 550Hz may be used to represent all vehicles. The wavelength of sound at f=550Hz for traffic noise is about 2 feet. According to the above conclusion, an absorptive highway noise barrier is only needed to cover to cover approximately a 2 foot length of absorbing material. It would be more economical to cover only the region in the immediate vicinity of the edge with highly sound obsorbent material.

  • In this study, the acoustic performance of a dissipative silencer used in the ship with excellent performance compared to its size was predicted and analyzed using a numerical analysis method to reduce the pipe noise. To this end, the performance of the single expansion chamber-shaped silencer was verified using experimental and numerical analysis methods. The acoustic performance of the silencer was expressed using the Transmission Loss (TL), an indicator of its own performance, and the result was derived using the two-load method, which measured by changing the impedance at the end of the pipe. For the numerical analysis method, a general-purpose finite element analysis program was used, and the Delany-Bazley-Miki model with the flow resistivity of the sound absorbing material as an input parameter was applied. Finally, we compared the experimental and simulated results for each of the acoustic performances of the single expansion type and the dissipative silencer to confirm the consistency of the results, and predicted and analyzed the simulation results for four cases according to the properties of the sound absorbing material.

  • In a gas system fire extinguishing system, extinguishing agents are usually stored with approximately 280 bar at $21^{\circ}C$ and are released at approximately 8 MPa through the decompression valve and orifice to quickly suppress the fire. When extinguishing agents are discharged, they cause a loud noise (approximately 140 dB), which can damage electronics, such as hard disk drives (HDDs). Therefore, the noise is becoming a serious issue in the gas extinguishing system. The method of the noise reduction by adding an absorbent is most general and in this study, the thickness of the absorbent was as a selected design variable. The noise level at the observation point and the flow characteristics inside the nozzle were numerically calculated and analyzed using the commercial code ANSYS CFX ver. 18.1.

  • The air conditioner system that is used in large structure, such as hospital, hotel, railway platform and train generate a high level noise generally. A chamber with sound absorbing materials, such as glass wool and polyurethane foam, are installed in this system to reduce the noise. However, these chambers cause environmental problems owing to the sound absorbing materials recently. Therefore, we develop noise chamber a built-in perforated panel resonance system as eco-friendly chamber to solve this problems. This noise chambers show the same noise reduction performance as the current chambers in the range above 500Hz. But, it reduces the noise up to 8dB(A) comparison to the current chambers in the range 200Hz~400Hz.

  • The possibility of a broadband noise reduction of piezoelectric smart panels is experimentally studied. Piezoelectric smart panel is basically a plate structure on which piezoelectric patch with shunt circuits is mounted and sound absorbing material is bonded on the surface of the structure. Sound absorbing materials can absorb the sound transmitted at mid frequency region effectively while the use of piezoelectric shunt damping can reduce the transmission at resonance frequencies of the panel structure. To be able to tune the piezoelectric shunt circuit, the measured electrical impedance model is adopted. Resonant shunt circuit composed of register and inductor in stories is considered and the circuit parameters are determined based on maximizing the dissipated energy through the circuit. The transmitted noise reduction performance of smart panels is investigated using an acoustic tunnel. The tunnel is a square crosses sectional tunnel and a loud speaker is mounted at one side of the tunnel as a sound source. Panels are mounted in the middle of the tunnel and the transmitted sound pressure across the panels is measured. Noise reduction performance of a double smart panel possessing absorbing material and air gap shows a good result at mid frequency region except the first resonance frequency. By enabling the piezoelectric shunt damping, noise reduction is achieved at the resonance frequency as well. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive method and piezoelectric shunt damping are a promising technology for noise reduction in a broadband frequency.

Piezoelectric smart panel is basically a plate structure on which piezoelectric patch with shunt circuits is mounted and sound absorbing materials are bonded on the surface of the structure. Sound absorbing materials can absorb the sound transmitted at mid frequency region effectively while the use of piezoelectric shunt damping can reduce the transmission at resonance frequencies of the panel structure. To be able to reduce the sound transmission at low panel resonances, piezoelectric damping using the measured electrical impedance model is adopted. Resonant shunt circuit for piezoelectric shunt damping is composed of register and inductor in series, and they are determined by maximizing the dissipated energy throughout the circuit. The transmitted noise reduction performance of smart panels is investigated using an acoustic tunnel. The tunnel is a tube with square crosses section and a loud-speaker is mounted at one side of the tube as a sound source. Panels are mounted in the middle of the tunnel and the transmitted sound pressure across panels is measured. Noise reduction performance of a smart panels possessing absorbing material and/or air gap shows a good result at mid frequency region but little effect in the resonance frequency. By enabling the piezoelectric shunt damping, noise reduction of 10dB, 8dB is achieved at the resonance frequencise as well. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive method and piezoelectric shunt damping are a promising technology for noise reduction in a broadband frequency.
