  • A simplified method for the computation of first second and higher order derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors derivatives associated with repeated eigenvalues is presented. Adjacent eigenvectors and orthonormal conditions are used to compose an algebraic equation whose order is (n+m)x(n+m), where n is the number of coordinates and m is the number of multiplicity of the repeated eigenvalues. The algebraic equation developed can be used to compute derivatives of both eigenvalues and eigenvectors simultaneously. Since the coefficient matrix in the proposed algebraic equation is non-singular, symmetric and based on N-space it is numerically stable and very efficient compared to previous methods. This method can be consistently applied to structural systems with structural design parameters and mechanical systems with lumped design parameters. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the finite element model of the cantilever beam is considered.

  • This paper deals with the vibration and stability of a circular cylindrical shaft, modeled as a tapered thin-walled composite beam and spinning with constant angular speed about its longitudinal axis, and subjected to an axial compressive force. Hamilton's principle and the assumed mode method are employed to derive the governing equations of motion. The resulting eigenvalue problem is analyzed, and the stability boundaries are presented for selected taper ratios and axial compressive force combinations. Taking into account the directionality property of fiber reinforced composite materials, it is shown that for a shaft featuring flapwise-chordwise-bending coupling, a dramatic enhancement of both the vibration and stability behavior can be reached. It is found that by the structural tailoring and tapering, bending natural frequencies, stiffness and stability region can be significantly increased over those of uniform shafts made of the same material. In addition, the particular case of a classical beam with internal damping effect is also included.

  • A dynamic vibration absorber using the Zener's model has been taken into account with respect to frequency response characteristics. The concept of the tuned mass damper with a single degree of freedom has been well applied for many industrial fields, because many researchers have extensively studied various basic characteristics, performance and optimization methods for long time. The Zener's model has an additional spring, which is connected between a damper and a mass, while the tuned mass damper with a single degree of freedom consists of a mass, a spring and a damper connected in parallel. In previous works, the basic performance and characteristics of the Zoner's model as a dynamic vibration absorber have not been investigated. In this study, the frequency response characteristics according to the parameter change of the Zener's model have been described. In order to find the optimum value of several parameters, we use iterative scheme with three dimensional frequency response diagram by MATLAB programming. Present results shows the Zener's model can give more good damping performance than the simple tuned mass damper, and the numerical of optimization method should be developed for the efficient vibration absorbtion.

  • This paper concerns the analytical modeling and dynamic analysis of advanced rotating blade structure implemented by a dual approach based on structural tailoring and viscoelastic material technology. Whereas structural tailoring uses the directionality properties of advanced composite materials, the passive material technology exploits the damping capabilities of viscoelastic material (VEM) embedded into the host structure. The main structure is modeled as a composite thin-walled beam Incorporating a number of nonclassical features such as transverse shear. anisotropy of constituent materials, and rotary inertia etc. The VEM layer damping treatment is modeled by using the Golla-Hughes-McTavish (GHM) method, which is employed to account for the frequency-dependent characteristics of the VEM. The displayed numerical results provide a comprehensive picture of the synergistic implications of both techniques, namely, the tailoring and damping technology on dynamic response of a thin-walled beam structure exposed to external time-dependent excitation.

  • The vehicle design engineers have studied the method of applying damping materials to the vehicle bodies by computer simulations and experimental methods in order to improve the vibration and noise characteristics of the vehicles. The unconstrained layer damping, being concerned with this study, has two layers(base layer and damping layer) and proyides vibration control of the base layer through extensional damping. Generally this kind of surface damping method is effectively used in reducing structural vibration at frequencies beyond 150Hz. The most important thing is how to apply damping treatment with respect to location and size of the damping material. To solve these problems, the current experimental methods have technical limits which are cumbersome, time consuming, and expensive. This Paper proposes a method based on finite element method and it employes averaged ESE(element strain energy) percent of total of dash panel assembly for 1/1 octave band frequency range by MSC/NASTRAN. The regions of high ESE percent of total are selected as proposed location of damping treatment. The effect of damping treatment is analyzed by comparing the frequency response function of the SPCC bare Panel and the damping treated panels.

  • Gears, which rotate and transmit power by interlocking two cogwheels, were invented in BC. They have been used in various systems, including industrial machinery, transportation devices, and living facilities, through the industrial revolution. Regardless of how they are used, gears are a major source of noise and vibration. Many effective measures are being taken to reduce the radiation noise generated from gears, most commonly by lubrication. Lubrication in gear units reduces friction on interlocking gear surfaces, dampening radioactive noise. This can be very useful for quiet gear design if these lubricating damping effects can be reflected in the analytical phase for gear design. This study experimentally confirms the properties of lubricated and non-lubricated radioactive noise by designing a decelerator gearbox and analyzing the radioactive noise characteristics by torque, rotation, and the number of gears using computer analysis.

  • Since the vibration induced by a train is transferred directly to a station via a roadbed structure, the elevated station is particularly vulnerable to noise and vibration. To establish more appropriate measures to reduce vibration, the structural behavior and damping characteristics depending on the structural type and the composition of a elevated station should be identified, because the noise inside the station is mainly structure borne noise by the vibration of a station structure. In this paper, the vibration characteristic changes depending on mechanical connection types between an elevated station and a connected bridge are analyzed. The finite element model for Daecheon Station is constructed for the purpose of this study, and the analysis is performed using ABAQUS. The analyses are conducted for with and without bridge connections, and for the bridge connections, ramen and bearing types are considered in the analysis.

  • Shock absorber has a great influence on the performance of the vehicle(ride comfort, manipulation, noise, vibration, turning, stability). Therefore, in this study we consider theoretically about general damper, variable damping oil damper, the control of vehicle Characteristics for the suspension, and undesirable phenomenon. And we measured the vibration/noise characteristics of shock absorber for the real car experimentation, strain change, and noise characteristics of shock absorber using experimental equipment. The study of domestic company and research institute on the vehicle shock absorber is active, but that of basis is not. So we think that they should be accomplished actively. Therefore, this paper will develop theoretical system on the vibration/noise characteristics of shock absorber by theoretical consideration and experimental result analysis of dynamic characteristics of shock absorber that were accomplished in this study. Then we will use it as the optimistic design data for shock absorber development.
