  • A linear stability analysis of a diffusion flame with radiation heat loss is performed to identify linearly unstable conditions for the Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number and radiation intensity. We adopt a counterflow diffusion flame with unity Lewis number as a model. Near the kinetic limit extinction regime, the growth rates of disturbances always have real eigenvalues, and a neutral stability condition perfectly falls into the quasi-steady extinction. However, near the radiative limit extinction regime, the eigenvalues are complex, which implies pulsating instability. A stable limit cycle occurs when the temperatures of the pulsating flame exceed the maximum temperature of the steady-state flame with real positive eigenvalues. If the instantaneous temperature of the pulsating flame is below the maximum temperature, the flame cannot recover and goes to extinction. The neutral stability curve of the radiation-induced instability is plotted over a broad range of radiation intensities.

  • The geometrically similar swiss roll reactors of different physical sizes were tested with the aim of independently determining the effects of Re and Da. It is found that the difference between catalytic and non-catalytic combustions extinction limits are narrowed as scale decreases. In addition to assess the importance of fuel chemistry, different families of fuels including alkanes and ethers were tested. From these results the effect of scale and fuel type on microscale reactor performance and implications for practical micro combustion devices are discussed.

  • Combustion and extinction limits in heat-recirculating excess enthalpy reactors employing both gas-phase and catalytic reaction have been examined with an emphasis Reynolds number (Re) effects and possible application to microscale combustion devices. In this paper, geometrically similar reactors of different physical sizes and different numbers of turns were tested with the aim of estimating for combustor characteristics. Combustion efficiency is estimated by measuring exhausted gases through the gas chromatograph. From these results the effect of scale and number of turns are demonstrated and optimal operating conditions for Swiss roll combustors are identified.

  • Nonlinear dynamics of pulsating instability-diffusional-thermal instability with Lewis numbers sufficiently higher than unity-in counterflow diffusion flames, is numerically investigated by imposing a Damkohler number perturbation. The flame evolution exhibits three types of nonlinear behaviors, namely, decaying pulsating behavior, diverging behavior (which leads to extinction), and stable limit-cycle behavior. The stable limit-cycle behavior is observed in counterflow diffusion flames, but not in diffusion flames with a stagnant mixing layer. The critical value of the perturbed Damkohler number, which indicates the region where the three different flame behaviors can be observed, is obtained. A stable simple limit cycle, in which two supercritical Hopf bifurcations exist, is found in a narrow range of Damkohler numbers. As the flame temperature is increased, the stable simple limit cycle disappears and an unstable limit cycle corresponding to subcritical Hopf bifurcation appears. The period-doubling bifurcation is found to occur in a certain range of Damkohler numbers and temperatures, which leads to extend the lower boundary of supercritical Hopf bifurcation.

  • Screening method for NSAIDs (Hon-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) in urine was developed using GC/NCI-MS. Derivatized six fenamates with pentafluoropropionic anhydride showed high sensitivity in NCI-MS. The conditions of the derivatization reaction and chromatographic conditions were established for screening with a trace analysis. Limit of detection was in the range of 4-25 pg/mL. This method may be used to the equine doping analysis for NSAIDs and forensic analysis.

  • The wide use of metal dusts have been found in industrial field and many dust explosion accidents occur by fire spread of dust layer. In this study, we developed a new experimental device to examine fire and explosion characteristics of the dust layer. Aspects of the burning zone over metals(Mg, Zr, Ta, Ti, etc) and PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) dust layers have been investigated experimentally to clarify behaviors (Spread rate and quenching distance) and effects of $N_2$ surrounding gas on the fire spread over metal dust layers. From the experimental result, it was found that the spread rate of metal dusts is larger than PMMA, the dependability of spread rate over the thickness of dust layer is small, and the minimum oxygen concentration of spread flame over Mg dust layer is 3.6-3.7 vol%. Since high correlation between the spread rate and the reciprocal of quenching distance was seen, relative risk prediction in those inflammable parameters can be predicted.

  • Edge flames have been interested as a basic structure that is concerned to flame stabilization and re-ignition of non-premixed flames. The edge flame consists of a lean premixed flame, a rich premixed flame, and a diffusion flame. In order to investigate fundamental structures of the edge flames at the conditions near the flammability limits, edge flames were stabilized within a heated narrow channel. Highly diluted partially premixed methane was used, and the flow rates of air and the partially premixed mixture were controlled. Various flame behaviors, including a transition between ordinary edge flames and premixed flames, were observed. Flame stabilization characteristics were examined as well. All flame stabilization conditions in this study showed a similar trend: characteristic time scales were inversely proportional to the equivalence ratio defined at the burner inlet. Finally, an interesting flame structure having a weak diffusion branch enveloped by a closed premixed branch was found near the flammability limits even in a fuel-air mixing layer. This structure was named as a "flame-drop" and the importance of this structure was first suggested.

  • The Performance of micro combustor in various condition was exploited experimentally. Various geometric conditions of combustor were considered to figure out the performance of micro combustor. The micro combustor studied in this study was constant volume with cylindrical shape. Geometric parameters of combustor were defined to be combustor height and diameter. The effect of height was exploited parametrically with the size of 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. The effect of diameter was observed parameterized with 7.5mm and 15mm. Three different combustibles or Stoichiometric mixture of methane/air, hydrogen/air were used. Pressure transition during combustion process was recorded. The maximum pressure by combustion responded favorably with the change of height of combustor and the initial pressure. The flame propagation was visulized using Schlieren method. The flame propagation within combustor was observed when specific conditions such as combustor height and initial pressure over critical value was satisfied.

  • The objective of present study was to develop a simultaneous determination method of 5 medical compounds, including beclomethasone, dexamethasone, prednisolone, ketoprofen, phenylbutazone in foods, using LC-MS/MS. To optimize MS analytical condition of 5 compounds, each parameter was established by MRM mode. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a C18 column successfully, with a mobile phase made up of A (0.1% formic acid) and B (0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile), at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min for 17 min with a gradient elution. LOD and LOQ of 5 compounds were in the range of 0.40~4.60 ng/mL and 0.81~11.46 ng/mL, respectively. As a result of analyzing the three concentrations of the standard mixture added to blank samples, the results showed that the mean recovery rate of 5 compounds was in the range of 81.52~103.83%, and RSD (%) of Intra- and Inter-day assay were 0.52-10.45. Since relatively fine selectivity, accuracy and reproducibility were shown in this qualified experimental method, it could be utilized efficiently to investigating those 5 compounds to see if it is added to food products illegally.
