  • In this study, an attempt for formulating a new and simplified rectangular finite element having only four corner nodal points is made to analyze the elastic-plastic large deformation behaviour up to the ultimate limit state of plates with initial imperfections. The present finite element contains the geometric nonlinearity caused by both in-plane and out-of-plane large deformation because for very thin plates the influence of the former may not be negligible. Treatment of expanded plastic zone in the plate thickness direction of the element is simplified based upon the concept of plastic node method so that the elastic-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is derived by the simple matrix operation without performing complicated numerical integration. Thus, a considerable saving of the computational efforts is expected. A computer program is also completed based on the present formulation and numerical calculation for some examples is performed so as to verify the accuracy and validity of the program.

  • A series of calibration chamber tests are performed to investigate the spatial distribution of the excess porewater pressure due to piezocone penetration into overconsolidated clays. It was observed that the excess porewater pressure increases monotonically from the piezocone surface to the outer boundary of the shear zone and then decreases logarithmically, approaching zero at the outer boundary of the plastic zone. It was also found that the size of the shear zone decreases from approximately 2.2 to 1.5 times the cone radius with increasing OCR, while the plastic radius is about 11 times the piezocone radius, regardless of the OCR. Based on the modified Cam clay model and the cylindrical cavity expansion theory, the expressions to predict the Initial porewater pressure at the piezocone were developed, considering the effects of the strain rate and stress anisotropy. The method of predicting the spatial distribution of excess porewater pressure proposed in this study was verified by comparing it with the porewater pressure measured in overconsolidated specimens in the calibration chamber.

  • In this study, the rheological models were introduced and developed to reflect rate dependent tensile behaviour of concrete. In general, mechanical properties(e.g. strength, elasticity, and fracture energy) of concrete are increased under high loading rates. The strength of concrete shows high rate dependency among its mechanical properties, and the tensile strength has higher rate dependency than the compressional strength. To simulate the rate dependency of concrete, original spring set of RBSN(Rigid-Body- Spring-Network) model was adjusted with viscous and friction units(e.g. dashpot and Coulomb friction component). Three types of models( 1) visco-elastic, 2) visco-plastic, and 3) visco-elasto- plastic damage models) are considered, and the constitutive relationships for the models are derived. For validation purpose, direct tensile test were simulated, and characteristics of the three different rheological models were compared with experimental stress-strain responses. Simulation result of the developed visco-elasto-plastic damage(VEPD) model demonstrated well describing and fitting with experimental results.

  • Warm-Mix Asphalt(WMA) mixtures, which meet environmental protection and have high energy efficiency, are emerging as an alternative to hot-mix asphalt mixtures. The objective of this study is to evaluate WMA made with Aspha-min in the laboratory and to compare the design results accomplished by new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide(MEPDG) with control mixture. An asphalt mixture with a nominal maximum size of 12.5mm and PG64-28 binder was used. Resilient modulus tests for a control mixture and WMA with 0.3% and 0.5% of Aspha-min were conducted. The results obtained by MEPDG after inputting the test output into the design indicated that the predicted rut depth of WMA using Aspha-min was much lower than that of control mixture, and showed that WMA was more resistant to rutting than control mixture.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

  • Upsetting of non-circular blocks is characterized by the three-dimensional deformation with lateral sidewise spread as well as axial bulging along thickness. A kinematically admissible velocity field for the upsetting of prismatic or non-prismatic blocks is proposed which considers the different frictional conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of a billet. From the proposed velocity field the upper-bound load and the deformed configuration are determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to some chosen parameters. Experiments are carried out with annealed SM 15C steel billets at room temperature for different billet shapes and frictional conditions. The theoretical predictions both in the forging load and the deformed configurations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. Therefore, the velocity field proposed in this work can be used for the prediction of forging load and deformation in upsetting of prismatic or non-prismatic blocks, considering the different frictional conditions at two flat dies.

  • In this paper a computer program for displacement control method was developed, in which a certain displacement of the structure is increased and the applied loads and another displacements are obtained. To simplify the nonlinear structural analysis, the relationships of moment-curvature were linearized as elasto-softening model for over-reinforced concrete beam and as elasto-plastic-softening model for under-reinforced concrete beam. Since the result of the analysis of reinforced concrete beam depended on the element size beyond elastic zone, the relationship of moment-curvature was modified for each element by using the concept of fracture energy approach. Overall, analytical results accurately predicted the load-displacement behavior of reinforced concrete beams.

  • In this research, nonlinear Timoshenko beam element that is able to capture nonlinear shear deformation is developed. The proposed model shows more reasonable prediction than Bernoulli beam theory in short columns or strong shear column due to the consideration of shear deformation. The cross-section is modeled as fiber approach. Since the model is based on the fiber approach for section discretization, the plastic progress of the section can be traced and the coupling effect of the axial and flexural response. The developed element is implemented into the finite element program to analysis general reinforced concrete structures. As parametric study, reinforced concrete columns are analyzed and compared with experimental results, analyzed the property of behavior for reinforced concrete columns.

  • In the construction of high-rise buildings, bent re-bars are manually straightened to connect slabs to core-walls, which are usually cast before floor structures. During cold bending and straightening of re-bars, plastic deformation causing work hardening, Bauschinger effect and aging hardening is unavoidable. Tensile tests of coldly bent and straightened re-bars were conducted with test parameters of grade, diameter, and bend radius of re-bars as well as age between bending and straightening. Test results showed that proportional limits were lower and strain hardening occurred without yield plateaus. Inside and outside of re-bars with compression and tension deformations, respectively, during bending showed lower yield points due to Bauschinger effect and no yield plateaus due to work hardening, respectively. When re-bar grade was higher, yield point became significantly lower where Grade 400 re-bars had yield strengths lower than specified yield strength of 400 MPa. Because the surface of re-bar has higher strength than the core of re-bar, Bauschinger effect was more obvious for higher-grade re-bars. When age between bending and straightening was greater, yield strength increased and elongation decreased (i.e. embrittlement occurs). Using measured data, stress-strain relationship for straightened re-bars was developed based on Ramberg-Osgood model, which can be used to evaluate stiffness of joints when straightened re-bars are applied.

  • This study developed SiC$_{p}$/A1$_2$O$_3$$_{f}$/Al composites for electronic packaging to which reinforcements were added with the volume fractions of 49%, 56% and 63% by the squeeze casting method. 0.8 wt. % of the inorganic binder as well as the A1$_2$O$_3$ fiber and SiC Particles with the volume fraction of 1:10 were added to the composites, which were produced in the newly designed mold. For the produced SiC/Al composites, the CTEs (coefficients of thermal expansion) were measured from 30 to 300 and compared with the FEM numerical simulation to analyze the temperature dependent properties. The experiment showed the CTEs of SiC$_{p}$/A1$_2$O$_3$$_{f}$/Al composites that were intermediate values of those of Rule of Mixture and Turner's Model. The CTEs were close to Turner's Model in the room temperature and approached the Rule of Mixture as the temperature increases. These properties analyzed from the difference of the average stress acting between the matrix and the reinforcements proposed in this study.
