This article describes the concept and the trend of antimicrobial coating agents, which will help to establish the direction of the research and development on antimicrobial coating agent. Antimicrobial agents are compounds that inhibit or kill microorganisms. They are classified into inorganic, metallic, low molecular weight organic, natural organic, and polymeric compounds. Antimicrobial coatings are applied to the surface of daily necessities, medical devices, industrial products, electrical appliances, fabrics, and interior building materials, etc. Conventional antibiotics penetrate microbes without damaging bacterial cell walls, leading to drug resistance which polymeric antimicrobials can prevent by disrupting cell walls. Most polymeric antimicrobials are focused on cationic polymers. Improvement in the selectivity and durability of antimicrobials and reduction of their toxicity will come true by more reasonable design of molecular structures and their combination in coating system.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a diffusible, multifunctional and transcellular messenger that has been implicated in numerous physiological and pathological conditions. It has been reported that NO induced apoptosis in tumor cells, macrophage cells and inhibited apoptosis in normal cells, endothelial cells. To examine whether NO could induce apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, cells were treated with SIN-1 (3-morpholinosydnonimine), NO donor. Cell viability did not change in SIN-1 treated cells for 48 h and there was no significantly changes in cell cycle progression or growth pattern by FACS analysis. But p53 protein, an apoptosis-related factor, increased SIN-1 treatment time dependently. Bcl-2, MDM2 and p21 were also accumulated. Bax level did not change. A major role of inhibiting apoptosis by NO in MCF-7 cells, cobalt chloride ($CoCl_2$) was added to cells preincubated with SIN-1. Whereas $CoCl_2$ treated cells underwent apoptosis, for 24 h SIN-1 preincubated cells were not induced apoptosis. Inactivated proteins, MDM2 and bcl-2, by $CoCl_2$ levels also increased in SIN-1 pre-treated cells. These results suggested that SIN-1 blocked p53 by MDM2 activation and inhibited apoptosis by inducing p21 and bcl-2 expression.

The Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson is an annual plant distributed in China and Korea. The fruit of C. monnieri is used as a medicinal herb that is effective for the treatment of carbuncle and pain in female genitalia. However, the anti-cancer effects of CME have not yet been reported. In this study, we assessed the apoptotic effects and cell cycle arrest effects of ethanol extracts from C. monnieri on HCT116 colon cancer cells. The results of an MTT assay and LDH assay demonstrated a decrease in cell viability and the cytotoxic effects of CME. In addition, the number of apoptotic body and the apoptotic rate were increased in a dose-dependent manner through Hoechst 33342 staining and Annexin V-PI double staining. In addition, cell cycle arrest occurred at the G1 phase by CME. Protein kinase B (Akt) plays an important role in cancer cell survival, growth, and division. Akt down-regulates apoptosis-mediated proteins, such as mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), p53, and Glycogen Synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β). CME could regulate the expression levels of p-Akt, p-mTOR, p-GSK-3β, Bcl-2 family members, caspase-3, and PARP. Furthermore, treatment with CME, LY294002 (PI3K/Akt inhibitor), BIO (GSK-3β inhibitor), and Rapamycin (mTOR inhibitor) showed that apoptotic effects occurred through the regulation of the AKT/mTOR/GSK-3β signaling pathway. Our results demonstrated CME could induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in HCT116 colon cancer cells.

This study focused on spawning season, induce spawning, spawning and larval development of the Jicon scallop in Daehuksan Island of southwestern waters in Korea. The condition index and gonadosomatic index were used to investigate the reproductive pattern of the Jicon scallop. The major spawning season was from July to August, showing an unimodal gametogenic cycle per year. Several different tests were carried out to induce spawning of the mature male and female C. farreri. For females, the injection of serotonin, temperature induction technique and the combination of the both treatments produced significantly faster gamete release. Unlike females, males spawned only in response to the UV rays irradiation stimulation. Mean size of fertilized eggs was 69.5 $\mu$m in diameter. After fertilization, the zygote could be divided into 2 cells as early as 2 hours. It took about 8 hours to develop the 8-cell stage, about 20 hours to hatch trochophore larvae, and about 40 hours to be D-shaped larvae.
Spermatogenesis in male yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis was histologically investigated by sampling testicular tissue from $2{\sim}3$ years old wild fishes captured from the coast of Mok-Po, South Korea. Spermatogenesis was characterized histologically, and staged according to the most advanced type of germ cell present. Annual reproductive cycle was classified into the following successive 4 stages: spermatogonia from August to September (rest stage), spermatogonia and spermatocytes from October to December (growth stage), spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids from January to February (maturation stage), spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa from March to May (spermiation stage IV), and regressing testis from June to July (degeneration stage).
[ $\beta$ ]-Glucans (AG) were prepared from Agaricus blazei cultured in the medium fortified with the roots of Pueraria spp. by repeated extraction with hot water, gel filtration chromatography and DEAE ion exchange chromatography. Oligosaccharides (AO) were derived from the hydrolysis of AG by an endo-$\beta$-(1$\rightarrow$6)-glucanase from Bacillus megaterium. The anti-HT-29 human colon cancer activity of AG or AO was investigated using MTT assay, apoptosis assay, cell cycle analysis, and cDNA microairay. AG and AO both inhibited proliferation and growth of HT-29 cells, and stimulated apoptosis of the cells in a dose-dependent manner. In cell cycle analysis, treating HT-29 cells with AG or AO resulted in the increase of cells in the G0 (sub-G1) and G1 phase. Especially, AO was more effective in inducing G0/G1 cell cycle arrest than AG. To screen the genes involved in the increase of apoptosis, the gene expression profile of the HT-29 cells treated with AO was examined by cDNA microarray. While several genes involved in cell cycle progression (CCND2 and CDK2) were down-regulated, many genes involved in apoptosis (TNFSF9, TNFRSF9, FADD, CASP8, BAD, CRADD, CASP9 etc), cell cycle inhibitor (CDKN2A), immune response (IL6, IL18, IL6R etc), and tumor suppressor (CEACAM1, TP53BP2, IRF1, and PHB) were up-regulated. These results suggest that AO could inhibit the proliferation and growth of HT-29 cells by G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy used on pediatric oncology patients often causes dentofacial anomalies. Defects noted include tooth and root agenesis, root thinning, root shortening, localized enamel defect and maxillofacial underdevelopment. The effect of radiotherapy usually is confined to the radiation site but the effect of chemotherapy may be more wide spread becuase of its systemic distribution. Many pediatric cancers are treated with a combination of radiation and multiagent chemotherapy. Dental treatment affected by chemotherapy and radiation therapy damage to developing teeth and maxilloface includes retention of teeth, space maintenance, prosthetic considerations, requirements for oral hygiene. The following case related to multiple rootless teeth.
The ubiquitous plant metabolite p-coumaric acid (p-CA) has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but its anti-cancer activity has not been established in gastric cancer cell lines. In this study, we investigated the effects of p-CA on the proliferation and transcriptome profile of SNU16 gastric cancer cells. Treatment with p-CA induced apoptosis of the SNU-16 cells by regulating the expression of pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins, such as Bcl-2, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), Bax, procaspase-3, and cleaved-caspase-3. The genes differentially expressed in response to p-CA treatment of the SNU-16 cells were identified by RNA sequencing analysis. Genes regulated by p-CA were involved mainly in the inflammatory response, apoptotic processes, cell cycle, and immune response. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis indicated that the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase-Akt and cancer signaling pathways were altered by p-CA. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis also revealed that p-CA treatment was correlated with differential expression of genes associated with the inflammatory response and cancer. Collectively, these results suggest that p-CA has potential utility in gastric cancer prevention.
Most animals, including human beings, live in a cyclic pattern of lift that is influenced by the ambient changes of environment. The regular changes occurred by rotation of the Earth itself its revolving around the Sun, and the local environment, are reflected by the distinct behavior in the living organisms. These regular changes of environment have been imprinted into the genes within the living organisms through the evolutionary process over a long period of time. The genes are expressed by rhythms during the process of fetal development followed by growth. The environmental modifications ultimately are settled in genes, serving as a biological clock that is located putatively in the hypothalamus. Thus the biological clock governs a large number of rhythms and affects the time of birth and death lift expectancy, behavior, physiology, cell division, biochemical reaction, etc. The rhythms are readjusted to the changes of environmental cues. The biological clock has the great advantage of predicting and preparing the regular changes of environment.
Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai leaf has been used as a folk medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcer, dipsosis, and hematemesis based on its anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and diuretic characteristics. We have previously reported the procedure for deriving a phytochemical-rich extract (PRE) from S. quelpaertensis and how PRE and its ethyl acetate fraction (EPRE) exhibits an anticancer effect by inducing apoptosis in various gastric cancer cells. To explore the molecular targets involved in this apoptosis, we investigated the mRNA and microRNA profiles of EPRE-treated SNU-16 human gastric cancer cells. In total, 2,875 differentially expressed genes were identified by RNA sequencing, and gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses indicated that the EPRE-modulated genes are associated with apoptosis, mitogen-activated protein kinase, inflammatory response, tumor necrosis factor signaling, and cancer pathways. Subsequently, protein-protein interaction network analysis confirmed interactions among genes associated with cell death and apoptosis, and 27 differentially expressed microRNAs were identified by further sequencing. Here, GO and KEGG pathway analysis revealed that EPRE modified the expression of microRNAs associated with the cell cycle and cell death, as well as signaling of tropomyosin-receptor-kinase receptor, transforming growth factor-b, nuclear factor kB, and cancer pathways. Taken together, these results provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the anticancer effect of EPRE.
