  • This research aims to assess whether neurofeedback training can reduce theta waves in adolescents. The experiment was conducted on 35 early youths living in Gyeonggi-do at youth counseling centers during April-October. According to circumstances and opinions of participants in the pre-brain analysis, they were classified into a non-training group (A), 12-week training group (B), and 24-week training group (C), containing 10, 15, and 10 members, respectively. EEG measurement and neurofeedback training was performed using the prefrontal 2-channel NeuroharmonyS and Brain Optimization program. EEG data was processed utilizing Brain Analysis ver1.3. Deducted data was converted to SPSS 21.0 to enable statistical processing. As a strategy to reduce theta through the Beta increase training, we applied the appropriate Alpha, SMR, Beta low reward training to the individual. Study results confirmed that theta waves of adolescents decreased through the prefrontal neurofeedback training. Groups (B) and (C) exhibited a greater decrease in theta waves compared with the control group.

  • The correlations between electroencephalographic (EEG) spectral power and emotional responses during affective sound clip listening are important parameters. Hemispheric asymmetry in prefrontal activation have been proposed in two decades ago, as measured by power value, is related to reactivity to affectively pleasure audio stimuli. In this study, we designed an emotional audio stimulus experiment in order to verify frontal EEG asymmetry by analyzing Event-related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP) results. Thirty healthy college male students volunteered the stimulus experiment with the standard IADS(International Affective Digital Sounds) clips. These affective sound clips are classified in three emotion states, high pleasure-high arousal (happy), middle pleasure-low arousal (neutral) and low pleasure-high arousal (fear). The analysis of the data was performed in both theta (4-8Hz) and alpha (8-13Hz) bands. ERSP maps in the alpha band revealed that there are the stronger power responses of high pleasure (happy) in the right frontal lobe, while the stronger power responses of middle-low pleasure (neutral and fear) in the left frontal lobe. Moreover, ERSP maps in the theta band revealed that there are the stronger power responses of high arousal (fear and happy) in the left pre-frontal lobe, while the stronger responses of low arousal (neutral) in the right pre-frontal lobe. However, the high pleasure emotions (happy) can elicit greater relative right EEG activity, while the low and middle pleasure emotions (fear and neutral) can elicit the greater relative left EEG activity. Additionally, the most differences of theta band have been found out in the medial frontal lobe, which is proved as the frontal midline theta. And there are the strongest responses of happy sounds in the alpha band around the whole frontal regions. These results are well suited for emotion recognition, and provide the evidences that theta and alpha powers may have the more important role in the emotion processing than previously believed.

  • Shiro-abhyanga is one of treatments of Ayurveda, which is the ancient system of health care and medicine in India. In this essay, I examined the effect of Shiro-abhyanga for relaxing stress of women in twentieth by the means of the brain wave test. The brain wave test showed that Shiro-abhyanga reduced Delta and Theta waves of the left brain but increased $\alpha$, SMR, Low-$\beta$ waves of the right brain. Delta and Theta waves are usually found in sleeping time. Their high measurement in awakening instructs the stress and depressing situations of objects. However the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga made the decrease of Delta and Theta waves and the increase of Alpha wave in working time. Alpha wave appears while objects are comfortable and peaceful from the relaxation of body and mind. Therefore the growth of Alpha wave says that the treatment of Shiro-abhyanga has an effect on mitigation of stress.

  • Control signal generated from EEG (electro-encephalogram) can be used in many applications. In our study, for the purpose of developing practical instruments, a single channel system of providing reliable on/off signals was investigated since a multi-channel system can be bulky and expensive. Brainwaves in alpha, beta and theta bands were analyzed in order to extract reliable control signals when the concentration state reached. Rest and concentration states were differentiated based on power spectrum and histogram analysis. A better performance was obtained when the ratio between the beta and theta bands was used compared to the theta band only. In general, the longer the rest period before concentration, the lower success rate was. In addition, longer rest time produced longer detection time. Though there were individual differences, in case of 10-second rest time, a success rate of 91% and a detection time of 20.2 seconds was achieved on average.

  • This study investigated the effects of Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy on electrical activity in the brain as evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG). The subjects were 29 healthy female young adults, and their sleep quality was assessed by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes according to the international 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to organic Origanum majorana essential aroma (50 ${\mu}l$) for a period of 3 minutes each before, during, and after aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed that Origanum majorana essential aroma increased the theta power at the frontal and temporal lobes of both cerebral hemispheres, the left parietal lobe, and the right occipital lobe. Furthermore, Origanum majorana essential aroma decreased the alpha power at the left occipital lobe and the beta power at the right temporal lobe. On the other hand, subjects with poor sleep quality showed an increase in the theta power at the temporal lobe of both cerebral hemispheres and a decrease in the alpha power at the left parietal lobe by Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy. It is concluded that Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy diminishes the state of wakefulness in the brain; alpha and beta powers were both decreased in the subjects with good sleep quality, but only alpha power was decreased in the subjects with poor sleep quality. Moreover, Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy has a sleep-inducing effect in both subjects with good sleep quality and poor sleep quality.

  • This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by electroencephalogram (EEG) in female adults with sleep disorders. The subjects were 28 healthy female adults and their sleep disorders were classified by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), parietal (P3, P4), reference, and ground regions according to the International 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to the L. angustifolia aroma for 3 min. Results showed that L. angustifolia aroma decreased the occipital and parietal alpha powers, and increased the frontal theta power and occipital beta power in subjects with good sleep quality. On the other hand, L. angustifolia aroma increased the theta power in the all cranial regions after aroma treatment in subjects with poor sleep quality. In conclusion, L. angustifolia aroma diminishes a state of wakefulness in the brain and helps individuals to fall asleep. Therefore, L. angustifolia aroma may have beneficial effect for female adults with sleep disorders.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the general effects of low-frequency electrical stimulation of the ankle joint acupuncture points(BL62 and KI6) on the brain waves of elderly women as a pilot study to figure out the possibility of candidate non-invasive and non-chemical stimulation method for the enhancing the brain function. Methods : A randomized, controlled, double-blinded clinical trial was performed in 31 healthy women(mean age, 54.5 years) within a treatment duration of 12 sessions. In the experimental group, low-frequency electrical stimulation was applied using the maximum range of the individual insensible strength(mean current, $0.04{\mu}A$). The control group received sham stimulation. The background electroencephalographic activity was measured before and after the12 sessions. Results : After 12 sessions of stimulation, the relative power of the alpha wave increased(32 of 32 channels: significant difference in 11 channels, p<0.05); the theta(30 of 32 channels: significant difference in 10 channels, p<0.05), beta(31 of 32 channels), and gamma(30 of 32 channels: significant difference in 7 channels, p<0.05) powers were also decreased compared with the sham group. Conclusions : Electrical stimulation on the ankle joint acupuncture points(BL62 and KI6) seemed to stabilize the elderly women brain by inducing the alpha power and reducing beta, theta, and gamma powers. These results provide insight into the action mechanism of the stimulation and can assist the future developement of a non-invasive and non-chemical treatment technique for stressor related cognitive problems.

  • Items related to a crime that are known only to criminals and investigators can be used in the concealed information test (CIT) to assess whether the suspect is guilty of the offense. However, in many cases wherein the suspect is exposed to information about the crime, the CIT cannot be used. Although the perpetrator's memories about the details of the crime are episodic, the memories of a suspect who has inadvertently discovered the details of the crime are more likely to be semantic. The retrieval of episodic memories is associated with theta wave activity, whereas that of semantic memories is associated with alpha wave activity. Therefore, these aspects of memory retrieval can be useful in identifying the perpetrator of the crime. In this study, P300-based CITs were conducted in a guilty participant in a mock crime and an innocent participant who has been given information about the simulated offense. The results demonstrate that the difference in P300 amplitudes between the probe and the irrelevant stimulus did not differ between the guilty and innocent conditions. As expected, the lower theta band power (4-6 Hz) was higher in the probe than in the irrelevant stimulus in the guilty condition, but there was no difference in the innocent condition. Conversely, the upper alpha band power (8-10 Hz) was lower in the probe than in the irrelevant stimulus in the innocent condition, but there was no difference in the guilty condition. The possibility of using theta and alpha band powers in lie detection is discussed.
