Purpose : The risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) and cardiovascular disease in Turner syndrome (TS) patients is high. We analyzed metabolic factors in adults with TS and evaluated the metabolic risk of insulin resistance. Methods : Forty-three adults with TS were enrolled. The frequency of MS and the values of the metabolic factors were analyzed. Patients were divided into insulin resistant and non-resistant groups according to values of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The correlations of HOMA-IR with metabolic parameters were analyzed. Results : The frequency of MS was 7% and those of each metabolic parameter were as follows: insulin resistance, 16.3%; central obesity, 15.4%; hypertriglyceridemia, 2.3%; low HDL cholesterol, 9.3%; hypertension, 36.8%. The insulin-resistant group had significantly higher values of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HOMA-IR, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) than the non-resistant group (P<0.05). HOMA-IR showed a significantly positive correlation with BMI, WC, FPG, and SBP and showed a negative correlation with HDL cholesterol. Conclusion : This study suggests that adults with TS have a high risk of metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance is correlated with metabolic factors. Therefore, TS patients should have their metabolic parameters monitored regularly to minimize metabolic complications and prevent cardiovascular diseases.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of individual background, educational experiences, and social awareness on youth's civic participation in the three East Asian countries (South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan), and provide educational implications for encouraging Korean youth's civic participation. And we estimated the effects of 17 variables on the youth's current and future civic participation using 'International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) 2016' data opened in 2018. The result showed that the factors affecting on the civic participation were significantly different between the three countries. And significant differences on current and future civic participation were confirmed within the same country. First, Korean youth have high level of their parents' civic resources but the level of civic education in school is lower than other countries, and Taiwan youth have relatively high level of national identity. Second, the factors affecting on civic participation are more influenced by educational experiences than individual background such as parents' socioeconomic status, and the mass media have significant effect on youth's civic participation in all the three countries. Third, non-formal program and cultural experiences in school have significant effects on civic participation in future adulthood. Based on these results, this study suggested that it was important to provide various non-formal activities as well as expansion of civic education for encouraging youth's civic participation.
The purpose of this study is to find out the main operational scheme of the "financial planning" and "the trust" for people with developmental disabilities as a means of property protecting and managing for them. The results are as follows; Regarding to "Financial planning", it is necessary to establish a measure to meet the financial needs for people with developmental disabilities in future plan; Issues to be taken care of in the point of financial planning include plan for the maintenance and use of property for their independent life; and public and private resources and support for the disabled. Obstacles are lack of national awareness of the financial planning for the disabled. In relation to the contents of the "trust" of people with developmental disabilities, the principles of operation are assuring universality, publicness, stability, self-decision making, and individuality; operating system is a mixture of public and private; subjects of target are people with developmental disabilities with no parents or caring family as well as income. The required support is a supervisory system for the secure management of asset to entrusted institutions; the decision support system for people with developmental disabilities; maintaining the qualification of government receipt of public assistance for those who do not redeem up to a certain amount of personal property utilizing the trust system.

The aim of this study was the relationship between smoking, alcohol drinking and vitamin D level among Korean adults using data from the '6th(2013-2014) Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey'. The data used in this study were analyzed for 3,565 people who were over the age of 19 ages and checked vitamin D level and consumption frequencies of vitamin D rich foods among 15,568 respondents to the '6th(2013-2014) Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey'. The subjects were divided into four groups: None group(non-smoking and non-alcohol drinking), smoking only group, alcohol drinking only group and both group (smoking and alcohol drinking). The mean serum vitamin D level of the subjects was $16.5{\pm}0.20ng/mL$ and 73.5% of vitamin D levels were insufficient and deficiency. The results from hierarchical multiple logistic regression showed that the Odds ratio for insufficient vitamin D due to smoking and alcohol drinking were significantly higher in the smoking only group 2.281(95% CI 1.080-4.817)times and both group 1.356(95% CI 1.010-1.922)times than none group. Our results showed the relationship between smoking, alcohol drinking and vitamin D level was significant in Korean adults. Future studies, such as a more systematic cohort study investigating the relationship between smoking, alcohol drinking and vitamin D level may be helpful in confirming the causal relationship between smoking, alcohol drinking and vitamin D level.
This study investigated the association between depression and oral health and the factors influencing depression in adults. Data on 13,199 people (male 5,793, female 7,406; age ≥19 years old) were extracted from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VIII (KNHANES VIII) (2016~2018) and analyzed using frequency, percentage, an x2 test, a T-test, and logistic regression analysis. Depression was defined as either a medical diagnosis or a score ≥10 on Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The probability of depression was found to be statistically different for general characteristics, such as gender, age, school grade, income, and drinking. The logistic regression analysis showed that the independent variables, general health awareness (OR=9.094, 95% CI 7.139~11.585) and oral health awareness (OR=1.936, 95% CI 1.465~2.560), were associated with depression, and speaking discomfort, chewing discomfort, oral pain (within 1 year), and prosthesis were found to increase depression probability. The depression probability was also was found to significantly increase by 1.81 times if brushing frequency was less that once a day, if people used dental floss (OR=1.42), and had to have an oral examination (OR=1.31). These results indicated that oral health and oral health behaviors are associated with the depression, with the influencing factors having oral health and behavior-related characteristics. Therefore, proper oral health and oral health risk factor behavior management programs should be developed to assist in reducing depression.
This research is a descriptive study that aimed to identify the health knowledge related stroke, optimistic bias, and social support of middle-aged adults and the effect these had on their health-promoting lifestyle This study was conducted by collecting 220 adults aged between 40 to 60 years from C City D city and K city. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the SPSS 23.0 program. The average health-promoting lifestyle was 44.27 points. The health-promoting lifestyle of the study participants showed a positive correlation between the optimistic bias(r=.18, p=.001) and social support(r= .61, p<.000). According to the results of multiple regression analysis, perception of Necessity for Stroke Education(β=.12, p=.010), optimistic bias(β=.18, p=.040), and social support(β=.48, p<.000) were shown to be significant factors that affected the health-promoting lifestyle of the participants. These variables explained 38.5%. Therefore, an health education program to improve the health-promoting lifestyle related to stroke in adults should be considered as a way to enhance social support and reduce optimistic bias.

For the case of radiation emergency, it is required to assess internal contamination of the public, including children as well as adults. The objective of the present study was to assess counting efficiency of a whole body counter by human body size and standing position of the measurement person. In this study, the FASTSCAN whole body counter used at National Radiation Emergency Medical Center of Korean Institute of Radiological and Medical Science was simulated by a radiation transport computer code. The simulation results of the counting efficiencies agreed well with measurements within the 2% of discrepancy for 4-year child and 5% for adults. The standing positions of the people were adjusted by body size to find the consistent trend of the counting efficiencies by human body size. Body size scaling factors of the whole body counter were derived to consider human body size and improve the measurement accuracy. The counting efficiency assessment methodology in this study can be successively used to improve the measurement accuracy when using a whole body counter for the case of radiation emergency.

Hypophosphatasia is caused by the mutations in ALPL, which encodes tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). It can be inherited either in an autosomal dominant or recessive manner. Clinically, hypophophosphatasia is characterized by skeletal findings similar to those in rickets or osteomalacia, but serum alkaline phosphatase levels are decreased in the affected patients. Hypophosphatasia can be classified into six clinical forms according to age at diagnosis and severity of symptoms: perinatal lethal, infantile, childhood, adult, odontohypophosphatasia, and perinatal benign. As being a very rare disease, only one case has been reported in Korean population. Here we describe a case with perinatal benign hypophosphatasia with recessive ALPL mutations. Bowing of lower legs was detected in prenatal period and low serum alkaline phosphatase level was noted after birth. During the follow-up evaluation for 4.5 years, bone mineralization and legs bowing were improved but the growth retardation was persistent. As the recombinant bone-targeted human TNSALP became available, the clinical improvement of the affected patients is expected including the case described here with this treatment. More efforts are needed to identify the cases affected by hypophosphatasia.

Performance characteristics of a wet air cleaning system were investigated experimentally, and discussed in relation with physicochemical properties of the target pollutants. The system is composed of an air cleaner, a separator, and a medium filter. Removal efficiency of the system was measured for ambient particles and gaseous air pollutants: $SO_2$, NO, $NO_2$, HCHO, and $NH_3$. For particle removal test, particles were introduced into the system through a fan, and the particle size distribution was measured at three locations by using two laser particle counters. Particle removal efficiency for each system component was obtained from the particle size distribution. It was found that the separator primarily removed coarse particles greater than $5{\mu}m$ in diameter, and that the medium filter mainly removed fine particles less than $5{\mu}m$ in diameter. For gas removal test, air with gaseous air pollutant was injected into the outlet of the fan, and the concentration was measured both at the upstream of the air cleaner and at the downstream of the separator. It was found that the gaseous species with high Henry's law coefficients, such as $SO_2$, HCHO, and $NH_3$, showed high removal efficiency, but the gaseous species with low Henry's law coefficients, such as NO and $NO_2$, showed low removal efficiencies. It was also found that negative ions were generated from the air cleaner.
The objective of the study is to identify the sub-path of entry into homelessness of young men and enhance understanding them. In specific, homeless risk factors were extracted through their experiences, and based on which the entry paths into homelessness were drawn. The homeless young adults were divided into two groups of those who became homeless in their adolescence and those who entered into homelessness after 19 and their differences were analyzed. As a results, the most prominent differences between the two sub-groups included individual and social factors; most of those who entered homelessness after 19 had physical or psychological problems, while the other group showed delinquency factors in adolescence and adulthood. As for social factors, the former group experienced more financial damage in the process of achieving independence before being homeless, while the latter group had relatively more experience of physical and psychological damage such as bullying, harassment and violence before being homeless and financial frauds. As for investigating the causality relationship of key homeless risk factors by adding a variable of time, and based on which, a constant pattern of entry paths toward homelessness was drawn among each sub-group of homeless young adults. For policy on homelessness, it is required to develop according to the characteristics of homeless young adults. Especially, a specific approach is necessary for the different homeless pathways by sub-group. Furthermore, the study indicated that management and preemptive responses for various homeless risk factors that homeless young adults experienced throughout their lifetime could be important prevention policy against homelessness.
