  • The purpose of this study was to understand the nature and structure of "uncertainty of chronically ill patients" by explaining it more scientifically. This study is based on the unique experiences, which individual uncertainty experiences differ from others. In this sense, Q-methodology which includes self-psychology and abductive logics is applied to the study. The results indicate that there are six types of uncertainty of chronically ill patients : my own fault, self-esteem loss, self-care determination, cure-doubt, reality-restructure, and past-tenacity reality-absence. Thus, "uncertainty of chronically ill patients" is defined from the study as the process in which continuous transition and evaluation of possibility cause changes in human recognition, attitude, action, etc.. The significance of the study is threefold : (1) discovery of six types of uncertainty of chronically ill patients in Korean people, (2) the better understanding of "uncertainty of chronically ill patients", (3) possible developments of nursing concept and assessment and intervention technique based on the new dimension of the understanding in uncertainty for nursing of chronically ill patients from this research.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze how a nursing student recognizes PBL with simulation education and its relationship to academic achievement. Methods: The study objects were the students in C college who learn through PBL using simulator for 15 weeks(September 2007 to December 2007). Learning element recognition was developed by Cho(2002) and three key evaluations(performance, self-evaluation, and colleague evaluation) were designed by professors. Results: Learning element recognition ranged from 2.37 to 4.83 with the average at 3.94. For Learning element recognition, students who preferred discussion score 4.15. This was statistically more significant than those who do not. Students who preferred presentations show significantly higher score in colleague evaluation. For Learning element recognition and academic achievement, self-evaluation and colleague evaluation showed relationship to PBL learning element. Conclusion: There was definitely a relationship with PBL learning element and academic achievement after learning the PBL with simulation education.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship of hardiness, job stress, and burnout in nurses, and to identify predictors of burnout. Method: Empirical data were collected from 154 staff nurses at one university hospital in Gwangju city. Self- reported questionnaires were composed of the Personal Views Survey(PVS), job stress scale, Tedium scale, and 7 items asking nurse's general characteristics. Data analysis was done with a SAS package. Result: In correlation analysis, hardiness, job stress, and nursing satisfaction had significant correlation with burnout. In stepwise multiple regression, 28.7% of the variance in burnout was accounted for by nursing satisfaction (19.9%), job stress (6.0%), and hardiness (2.8%). Among subscales of hardiness, only commitment was a significant predictor, so nursing satisfaction, job stress, and commitment explained 28.9% of variance in burnout. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the development of program for nurses to increase nursing satisfaction is needed, and more studies to examine causal relationship between nursing satisfaction and burnout is also highly recommended.

The 40 selected Q-statements from each of 35 participants were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a nine point scale. The collected data were analyzed using a PC-QUANL program. Results: Three types of nurses 'self-image were identified: 'proactive self-image', 'critical self-image', and 'adaptive self-image'. Two consensus items in three types were extracted: 'need to develop healing therapies to overcome the constant tension and exhaustion from work', and 'just think as a colleague than the senior-junior relationship. • Purpose: This study compared health behaviors between single-member and multiple-member households by gender in adults. Method: Study subjects were 21,757 adults 20-65-years-of-age from the Third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2005. The relationship between health behaviors and residence characteristics was assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Younger women living alone were more likely to drink than older women living with others. Women who were in multiple-member households and had a low income were less likely to exercise regularly, to sleep well, and to have regular health examinations. Age, educational level, and income were significantly associated with smoking, exercise, and health examination rather than residence characteristics in men. Conclusion: Residence characteristics should be considered in developing a public health program to reduce or increase modifiable health behaviors as well as age, gender, education, and income.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate college life adaptation and loneliness of non-traditional adult learners with nursing major. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on one hundred and ten participants from selected universities in G city. A structured questionnaire which included general characteristics, a College Life Adaptation Scale and a Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale was a study instrument. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for data analysis. The average level of college life adaptation was 44.8, while the score for loneliness was found to be 40.3. There was a significant difference in college life adaptation according to perceived health status. Loneliness showed a significant difference according to grades. A significant positive correlation was observed between college life adaptation and loneliness. In other words, the greater the loneliness, the lower the adaptation to college life. Thus, the results suggest that Korean universities should pay close attention to psychological factors such as loneliness to improve the adaptation of non-traditional adult learners with varied backgrounds to college.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to develop, to implement and evaluate a fever management nursing protocol for adult patients. Methods: This study was conducted through seven steps following both the guideline development procedures of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network and the Model of the Asan Medical Center Evidence-Based Practice, as follows: 1) identifying the clinical needs and composition of the protocol development group; 2) identifying and evaluating the evidence; 3) assessing the level of evidence and grading recommendations; 4) forming a protocol; 5) evaluating the protocol using an expert group validity test and identifying barriers to its implementation; 6) protocol development; and 7) evaluation of practical improvement measures following implementation of the protocol. Results: The evidence-based protocol for fever management in adult patients was completed and includes five domains and 15 items. The protocol had good content validity (CVI=.90) and nursing practice could be improved after implementation of the protocol. Conclusion: This nursing protocol can be used as a guide for nursing in febrile adult patients. We recommend that further guidelines be updated in an interdisciplinary manner in order to foster local adaptation of the best clinical practices.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study were to examine the trend of quantitative study in Korean Journal of Adult Nursing published between 1989-2011 and to provide future directions for nursing research in adult health nursing. Methods: A total of 883 published articles were reviewed, and main subject and the methodology were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The most frequently cited keywords were elderly, quality of life, depression, knowledge, stress and anxiety. The survey study was the most popular research design (67.6%) followed by experimental (26.5%), and methodological study (5.5%) design. Over 80% of studies with translated or developed instruments reported reliability for psychometric analysis, while only 18% of the studies reported validity of the instruments they used. In the periods of 2006~2011, significantly more studies utilized experimental design, obtained IRB approval and written consent, and included power analysis for sample size calculation. In recent experimental study, educational program and complimentary therapy were the two most frequently used interventions. Conclusion: Through the analysis of nursing studies published in Korean Journal of Adult Nursing, we found the number of experimental studies has increased and methodological rigor has improved in recent years.
