This study was designed to investigate lunch of the boy's and girl's middle school students in Busan. The survey was conducted from September 15 to September 30 in 2002. It was revealed that there is no difference in the scores measuring the knowledge In nutrition and the eating habit between male students and females. 10.6 % of the male students scored poor in the knowledge in nutrition, 38.2% fair 42.5% good and 8.7% excellent respectively while 4.1% of the female students scored poor in the same area, 31.6% fair, 52.1% good and 12.2% excellent respectively. The biggest number of both group of students scored good in their eating habit, the second biggest fair, the third biggest excellent and the least scored poor. Female students were reported to bring their lunch more than the male students do(p<0.05). And there was a significantly difference in the frequency of bringing lunch according to their knowledge in nutrition and their dietary attitude(p<0.001), but whether mothers have .jobs or not, mothers'educational background or monthly expenses for food didn't seem to make any differences. The intakes of nutritional elements except phosphorus and vitamin C are lower than RDA. The ratio of intakes of nutritional elements from lunch was 13∼14.1% of calcium, 17.9∼19.2% of vitamin A and 19.3∼19.6% of iron, showing a significant unbalance in nutritional intakes. Nutritional intakes had little relationship with the knowledge in nutrition and eating habit. The frequency of carrying lunch, energy intakes and phosphorus intakes had significantly relationship with each other. And the better the eating habit was, the more often the individual carried lunch.

Purpose: Childhood obesity has become a social problem due to the social distancing necessitated by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. This study aimed to identify the dietary problems of obese children through various dietary assessment methods and to confirm the usefulness of each method. Methods: The subjects were 88 students in the 4th to 6th grade of elementary school who participated in the nutrition camp organised by the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, 2020. To evaluate dietary problems and assess diet quality, 24-hour meal records, monthly food intake frequency, and Dietary Screening Test (DST) data were analyzed. Results: Of the subjects, 15.7%, 30.3%, and 53.9% were normal weight, overweight, and obese, respectively. The average age was 11.77 ± 0.77 years and the average body mass index was 23.96 ± 3.01 kg/m2. It was observed from the 24-hour meal record method that the overweight and obese subject groups consumed fewer green vegetables (p < 0.001) and white vegetables (p < 0.01) than the normal weight group. In the monthly food intake frequency method, the consumption of ramen (p < 0.01), snacks (p < 0.05), and sausages (p < 0.05) were high in the obese group, and that of anchovies, broccoli, and sweet pumpkin was high in the normal group (p < 0.05). The comparative data from the DST revealed that the overweight and obese groups had less vegetable intake than the normal weight group (p < 0.01) and had higher intakes of dairy products, fast food, and sweet snacks (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The usefulness of each method in the dietary evaluation of obese children was confirmed. To address the problem of obesity, it is necessary to evaluate the dietary problem and approach it with a customized solution tailor-made for the individual subject.

We studied the eating habits and sleeping patterns of 682 middle and high school students in their third year in Gwangju. According to the body mass index (BMI) of the subjects, obesity (over weight) was significantly higher in the third graders of high school students ($20.8{\pm}4.0$, 32.9%) than middle school students ($19.4{\pm}3.8$, 14.2%) (p<0.001). In addition, 71.1% of high school students experienced a lack of sleep compared to 48.8% of middle school students (p<0.001). There was a difference between good and bad sleepers in the number of times they ate snacks and the quantity of their snacks. Good sleepers had more fruit and dairy products (e.g. fruit juice 2~4 times (p<0.05), milk 2~4 times (p<0.001), apples 2~4 times, strawberries 2~4 times (p<0.01), and bananas 2~4 times a week), while bad sleepers consumed more beverages, frozen desserts, flour-based foods, fast food, bread, and rice cake. Bad sleepers clearly consumed snacks more frequently. From analyzing the correlations between sleep quality and snack intake, eating fruits 2~4 times a week (30 g~200 g/once) and drinking dairy products 2~4 times a week (120 mL~400 mL/once) appears to promote better sleeping habits.

This study aimed to offer groundwork for grasp and evaluation of nutritional status and dietary fiber intake through 24-hr recall method among middle school students in Chungbuk area. In addition, this study attempted to develop food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for dietary fiber intake. Average calorie intake per person a day was 2035.6 kcal for boys, and 1876.7 kcal for girls which were 75.4% and 93.8% of estimated energy requirement (EER), respectively. Percent estimated average requirements (%EAR) of calcium, iron and folate were the lowest showing 34.3%, 54.2%, 67.5% for boys and 36.6%, 59.2%, 64.4% for girls, respectively. Average dietary fiber intake per day was $17.6\pm5.3$ g for boys and $16.5\pm4.8$ g for girls which indicate 54.8% and 68.8% of adequate intake (AI), respectively. The main food sources of dietary fiber were polished rice and kimchi. The main food source groups were vegetables, cereals and their products were fruits, seaweeds in the order named, indicating 68.44% total dietary fiber intake from vegetables and cereals. From preliminary 39 food items, 19 food items were selected to derive the correlation coefficient of each food item between 24-hr recall and FFQ method. Correlation coefficient was increased from 0.71 to 0.78 with significant level of p<0.01 after adjustment of FFQ from 39 items to 19 items set. Percentage of classifying subjects into the same levels by food frequency questionnaire and 24-hr recall based on joints classification quartile Kappa value was evaluated. Agreement was highest in the second lowest group showing percentage to correspond rose from 90.2% to 92.4% and Kappa value of 0.54 to 0.59. Consequently, FFQ developed in this study would be useful for estimating the groups which show low intake.

This study was carried out to investigate the nutrients intakes of hypertensive female farmers in Korea. The number of subjects in this survey was 40(normal 22, hypertensive 18). Body weight, height, circumferences of waist, hip and thigh, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure of them were measured, and lipids and mineral levels of venous blood, mineral contents of 24-hour urine and Na or K levels of some sodium sources were analyzed. The evaluation of nutritional status was performed by recording dietary intake for a day and analyzing it with food composition table. Body weight, waist circumference, waist to thigh ratio, and serum triglyceride were higher in hypertensive. The mean values of calcium, vitamin B2 and niacin intakes of the subjects didn't meet the Korean recommended allowances though there was no significant difference in nutrients intake between two groups. The value of sodium intake presumed from content of sodium excreted to urine, and Na content and Na/K in Korean cabbage Kimchi was higher in hypertensive. These results suggest that reducing of serum triglyceride, decreasing of sodium intake and changing the taste for saltiness can help develop the health status of the rural female hypertensive and control the blood pressure of them.

A nutrition survey of 133 children, 9 to 12 years old, in the Nan Hyang elementary school, which offers no school lunch program and is situated in Shinllim 7-dong of Seoul, as the location of one of the socioeconomically vulnerable groups, was undertaken in July of 1989, to investigate dietary intake. Total daily energy and nutrient intake were below the RDA's, except for intake of vitamin. A and ascorbic acid. Carbohydrate provided 69% of total energy intake ; protein accounted for 12% ; fat provided 19%. The survey found that 15% of subjects skipped a meal more than once a day. Nutrient intakes of boxed lunch prepared at home and school, lunch eaten at home were out of balance. Family environment, anthropometric data and results of biochemical tests were positively correlated with nutrient intake. The survey emphasizes the urgent need for expansion of the school lunch program.
