  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of fiber on engineering properties of Fiber-Reinforced Soil. Engineering properties of soil reinforced with discrete randomly oriented inclusion depend on soil density, particle size, grading, fiber length, tensile strength and stiffness of fiber, mixing ration of fiber, confining stress, etc.. in this paper, the influence of fiber shape, fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber content, cement content and curing duration on engineering characteristics(compaction, shear & permeability) were evaluated for typical soils produced from construction works through uniaxial compression tests and triaxial compression tests. From the experimental results, it was also investigated if there is an optimal range of fiber lengths and fiber contents for the tested soils and tested mono-filament fibers.

  • The use of reinforced earth is not new. But available information on basic proper.ties like strength and deformation behavior of reinforced earth materials is not adequate. Therefore, tile purpose of this present investigation is first to research the frictional characteristics of the reinforcement and standard rand using a shear testing appratus. The second purpose of this articles are to report the results of comparison test on the strength and stress-strain behavior of a dry sand einforced with aluminium fcils and geotextiles under different confining pressures. Finally, the paper explores the possibility of geotextile reinforced earth masonry walls. It was observed that the stress-strain response of sand ai.e considerably improved by the introduction of geotextiles. The results of tests are used in developing the geotextile reinforced earth masonry walls. It is hoped that this paper will be helpful in providing the basic data for the rational design and construction methods of reinforced earth structures.

  • This paper describes the results of model experiments in the laboratory, which were conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls according to different surcharge loads and reinforcement types. The model walls were built in the box having dimension, 100 cm tall, 140 cm long, and 100cm wide. Three types of geosynthetics, geonet, geogrid A and geogrid B, are used as the reinforcements. Decomposed granite soil (SM) was used as a backfill material. Seven model walls are constructed and tested. After the construction of the model wall, the LVDTs are installed to obtain the displacements of the wall face. As the results of the model tests, the maximum horizontal displacements of the model walls occurred due to uniform surcharge pressure were measured at the 0.7H from the bottom of the wall. The more the reinforcement strength increases, the more the wall displacements decrease, and also the reduction ratio of the wall displacement decrease with increasing the surcharge pressure.

  • A new style of panel-type reinforced earth wall is a more integrated structure by connecting the geosynthetic strip reinforcement with a folding groove directly to the front panel through C-shaped insertion hole embedded in the panel. In this study, field measurements were conducted on two reinforced earth walls constructed at different sites to assess the field applicability and structural stability of the new style of panel-type reinforced earth wall. The horizontal displacement of the front panel, tensile deformation of the geosynthetic strip reinforcement, and horizontal earth pressure acting on the panel were measured and analyzed through the field measurements. According to the field measurements, after completion of the reinforced earth wall construction, the maximum horizontal earth pressure applied to the front panel was less than two-thirds of the Rankine earth pressure, and the maximum horizontal displacement of the front panel was less than 0.5% of the wall height, and the maximum tensile strain generated on the reinforcement was less than 1.0%. Therefore, it was found that two reinforced earth walls constructed at different sites remained stable.

  • In this study, the effect of temperature and soil confining stress on geosyntheic stress-strain properties was quantified by performing the temperature dependent confined tension tests for four types of geosynthetic including woven geotextile, composite, geomembrane and geogrid specimen. Temperature instrumentation on the GRS-retaining wall constructed in Jaechon-shi area was also performed to examine the a seasonal temperature variation of geosynthetic reinforcements in the backfill. Based on the test results, a comparison was made between unconfined and confined moduli far each temperature to quantify the soil confinement and temperature effect on stress-strain properties. And it was also proposed that the simple expressions for the secant moduli of geosynthetics as a function of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetics. As a result of the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall, the method of considering the effect of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetic reinforcements when performing the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall was proposed.

  • This paper presented a mechanism of the soil structure reinforced by geosynthetics, in which the reinforcing mechanism is treated as the effect arising from the reinforcement process to prevent the dilative deformation of soil under shearing. A full-scale in-situ model test was carried out by introducing the prestress method to enhance the geosynthetic-reinforcement, and the prestress effect through the FEM is also examined. The elasto-plastic model and the initial parameters needed in the FEM are presented. Moreover, the theoretical prediction is compared with the experimental results, which were obtained by a full-scale in-situ model test.

  • The results of an experimental investigation on the characteristics of compaction and compressive strength of polypropylene fiber reinforced soil are presented in this paper. This study has been performed to obtain the physical properties of PFRS(polypropylene fiber reinforced soil) such as strain-stress relationships, OMC(optimum moisture contents) and ${\gamma}$dmax (maximum dry unit weight), with four different contents (i.e., 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% weights ) of mono-filament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers. From the compaction test results, it is found that OMC increased with the contents ratio of fiber, but ${\gamma}$dmax decreased. It means that the improvement of the workability and the reduction of the weight of embankment structures by the asddtion of the polypropylene fiber. And, from the compression test results, it is found that the additon of the polypropylene fiber remarkably improved the compressive strength of PFRS. And it was observed in the viewpoint of strength that the fibrillated polypropylene fiber reinforced soil is more effective than the mono-filament polypropylene fiber reinforced soil.

  • This study has been performed to confirm the three dimensional effect of the crack reduction and the restrained effect of crack growth for the synthetic fiber reinforced soil. Two types of polyrpropylene fiber and low plastic clay(CL) were used for the test. And the test variable were fiber length and so on. The results of the study were summarized as follows ; 1) The mixing of synthetic fiber was effective in reducing crack growth due to adhesion between soil partlcles and synthetic fiber.l Especially initlal crack was delayed, as compared with the pure soil, for about 1 day in case of mono filament synthetic fiber and for about 1 or 2 days in case of fibrillated syntetic fiber. 2) As the content and length of synthetic fiber were increased , the effect of crack reduction was increased. It was found that 0.5% fibrillated synthetic fiber with 40mm length reinforced soil had about 3 times more effective than natural soils. 3) In case of the same fiber content and fiber length, the fibrillated synthetic fiber has nmore effective than the mono filament synthetic fiber for crack reduction.

  • Recently, method of reinforced earth retaining wall have been proposed according to the material of facing, geosynthetic, construction method, and facing slope. However, the regulations such as the design method and detailed review items according to each construction method are not clear, and collapse due to heavy rainfall frequently occurs. In this study, to obtain a more stable technical approach in the design of reinforced earth retaining wall, the combination of the pullout failure of reinforced earth retaining wall and the optimal reinforcement ratio of height using reinforced earth retaining wall using a single strength reinforcement is assumed, optimum design of stiffener, optimal design of superimposed wall and optimum length ratio of reinforcement material of geosynthetics are proposed through safety factor according to reinforcement length ratio (L/H).
