  • We analysed ground motions form Mw 4.3 earthquake around Backryoung Island for the seismic source focal mechanism and horizontal response spectrum. Focal mechanism of the Backryoung Islands area was compared to existing principal stress orientation of the Korean Peninsula and horizontal response spectrum was also compared to those of the US NRC Regulatory Guide (1.60) and the Korean National Building Code. The ground motions of 3 stations, including vertical, radial, and tangential components for each station, were used for grid search method of moment tensor seismic source. The principal stress orientation from this study, ENE-WSW, is consistent fairly well with that of the Korean Peninsula. The horizontal response spectrum using 30 observed ground motions analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). Response spectrum of 30 horizontal ground motions were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that the horizontal response spectrum revealed higher values for frequency bands above 3 Hz than Reg. Guide (1.60). The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the vertical response spectra revealed higher values for the frequency bands below 0.8 second than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (SD soil condition). However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the higher frequency bands.

  • With the recent occurrence of large-scale earthquakes in Korea, the importance of seismic design has greatly increased. Seismic design standards stipulate that dynamic time history analysis be performed for important or special structures. In the seismic analysis and design of such structures, determining a rational design input seismic wave is a very important factor in ensuring the reliability of the analysis and design. In the seismic design standards, rational design seismic waves must reflect the characteristics of the area (fault) and satisfy the design response spectrum for each seismic performance level. This requirement can be partially satisfied by modifying the actual seismic wave measured in the area (fault) according to the design response spectrum. In this study, a method of correcting and generating seismic wave time histories according to the design response spectrum based on actual measured seismic waves using the harmonic wavelet transform was proposed. To examine the applicability of the proposed technique, the technique was applied to earthquakes of magnitude 5.8 and 5.4, respectively, that occurred in Gyeongju (2016) and Pohang (2017), and the seismic wave time histories corresponding to the design response spectrum were modified and generated.

  • A comparative study was performed for a suspension bridge to grasp the possible differences in seismic responses evaluated by several analytical methods. The items mainly investigated are the linear vs. nonlinear response, the response spectrum method vs. the linear dynamic analysis method, and the damping ratio and it's implementation into analysis procedures. According to the numerical example, it is found that the seismic responses are considerably affected by the damping-related parameters even though slight differences are shown depending on the response quantities and the exciting directions. On the other hand, it is also confirmed that the seismic responses are less affected by the analysis method-related parameters such as the response spectrum method vs. the linear dynamic analysis method, and the linear and nonlinear analysis method. The response spectrum method is expected to give conservative results for the examined bridge, provided that the design response spectrum in the Korean Highway Design Specification is modified according to the proper damping ratio.

  • The result of recent seismic hazard analysis indicates that the ground motion response spectra for Korean nuclear power plant site have relatively large frequency acceleration contents. In the ordinary seismic fragility analysis of nuclear power plant structures and equipments, the safety margin of design ground response spectrum is directly used as a response spectrum shape factor. The effects of input response spectrum shape on the floor response spectrum were investigated by performing the direct generation of floor response spectrum from the ground response spectrum. The safety margin included in the design ground response spectrum should be considered as a floor response spectrum shape factor for the seismic fragility analysis of the equipments located in a building.

  • The horizontal response spectra using the observed ground motions from the recent more than 19 macro earthquakes were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). 130 horizontal ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that response spectrum have strong dependency on epicentral distance. The results also showed that the horizontal response spectra revealed much higher values for frequency bands above 5 Hz than Reg. Guide (1.60). The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the vertical response spectra revealed much higher values for the frequency bands below 0.3 second than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (SD soil condition). These spectral values dependent on frequency could be related to characteristics of the domestic crustal attenuation and the effect of each site amplification. However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the frequency bands above 5 Hz.

  • This study analysed response spectrum using the observed ground motion from the mine blasting and, then compared the results to the seismic design response spectra applied domestic nuclear power plants. The results showed that the resultant response spectra above 20 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 20 Hz revealed much lower values. These facts suggest that the analysis of response spectrum should be applied to the analysis of impacts to frequency dependent structures in addition to the analysis of peak values of ground motions.

  • The importance of seismic design is greatly emphasized recently in Korea, resulting in an increase in the number of dynamic analysis being performed. One of the most important input parameters for the dynamic seismic analysis is input ground motion. However, it is common practice to use recorded motions from U.S. or Japan without considering the seismic environment of Korea or synthetic motions generated in the frequency domain. The recorded motions are not suitable for the seismic environment of Korea since the variation in the duration and energy with the earthquake magnitude cannot be considered. The artificial motions generated in frequency domain used to generated design response spectrum compatible ground motion has the problem of generating motions that have different frequency characteristics compared to real recordings. In this study, an algorithm that generates target response spectrum compatible ground motions in time domain is used to generate a suite of input ground motions. The generated motions are shown to preserve the non-stationary characteristics of the real ground motion and at the same, almost perfectly match the design response spectrum.

  • The response spectrum was studied using the observed pound motion from the Odaesan Earthquake (2007/01/20), and then the results were compared to the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60) applied to the domestic nuclear power plants. For the response spectrum analysis, 21 horizontal and 8 vertical observed Pound motions were used for normalization and statistical analysis. The results showed that the MPOSD (Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra above 10 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 10 Hz revealed much lower values fur both horizontal and vertical response spectra. These results suggest that the response spectra (Reg. Guide 1.60), used as seismic design code for nuclear facilities in Korea, especially above about 10 Hz, should be reexamined fur apllication to the nuclear power plants structures operated in the Korean Peninsula.

  • Ground response analysis has been conducted for each borehole data in Pohang area, using 1D equivalent linear method program, to investigate the applicability of amplification factor to estimate peak ground acceleration. Earthquake motions for ground response analysis were prepared by matching response spectrums for return period of 500, 1000, and 2400 years suggested by seismic design code (MOIS, 2017). Ground survey data were acquired from Geotechnical Information DB System. It has been confirmed that response spectrum obtained from ground response analysis showed good agreement with those from seismic design code irrespective of ground classification. However, PGA (Peak Ground Accelerations) of ground response analysis did not coincide with PGA calculated using amplification factor suggested by seismic design code.
