  • In Korea, the probabilistically developed seismic hazard maps are used with deterministically derived seismic site coefficients in developing the design response spectrum of a specific site. Even though the seismic hazard maps and seismic site coefficients are incompatible, the current design code ignores such incompatibility. If the seismic hazard map and seismic coefficients are both developed in identical probabilistic framework, such problems can be solved. Unfortunately, the available method cannot be use to derive "true" probabilistic site coefficients. This study uses the ground motion time histories, which were developed as the result of a new probabilistic seismic hazard analysis in the companion paper, as input motions in performing one-dimensional equivalent linear site response analyses, from which the uniform hazard response spectra are generated. Another important characteristic of the hazard response spectra are that the uncertainties and randomness of the ground properties are accounted for. The uniform hazard spectra are then used to derive probabilistic site coefficients. Comparison of probabilistic and deterministically site coefficients demonstrate that there is a distinct discrepancy between two coefficients.

  • Recently the necessity of time history analyses is increasing for the seismic analyses of a structure, and the seismic design provisions of IBC2003, ASCE and KBC2005 require the use of a minimum of seven earthquake records for the time history analyses. Earthquake records for the time history analyses could be selected from the database of the field-measured earthquake records having similar site conditions with the designed site, or from simulated sites satisfying the design spectrum. However, in this study seven earthquake records were generated using 50 earthquake records, classified as records measured at the rock, in the database of the Pacific Earthquake Research Center (PEER). Seven earthquake records were first selected by the least squares fitting method comparing the scaling factored response spectra with the specified design spectrum, and a family of seven artificial time history earthquake records was ultimately generated by multiplying scaling factors, which were calculated by the least squares fitting method and the SRSS averaging method, to the corresponding selected earthquake records.

  • Response of buildings under seismic load is different according to fundamental period. It is provided in Korean Building Code(KBC2009) seismic response coefficient by fundamental period for seismic design of buildings. Recently, many researchers have studied on fundamental period and seismic response coefficient. However, studies on seismic design using Geographic Information System(GIS) are not sufficient. Therefore, this paper has analyzed on seismic response coefficient of buildings using ArcGIS. This paper can be evaluated efficiently for seismic analysis of structures. And this study will be used as basics of a reasonable seismic design using Geographic Information Systems(GIS).

  • The actual hysteretic behavior of structural elements and systems is smooth. Smooth hysteretic behavior is more representative of actual behavior than bi-linear or piece-wise linear stiffness degrading models. The strength reduction factor in seismic design is used to reduce the elastic strength demand to design levels. In this study, the effect of smoothness on the strength reduction factor is evaluated for several smooth hysteretic systems subjected to near-fault and far-fault earthquakes. For design purposes, a simple expression of the strength reduction factor considering hysteretic smoothness and earthquake characteristics, represented as near-fault and far-fault earthquakes, is proposed. The strength reduction factors calculated by the proposed simple formulation are more similar to the factors directly obtained from inelastic response spectrum analyses than those calculated by several existing formulas.

  • In this study, coefficient of variation for the seismic load effect on the segment lining was calculated. The statistical characteristics of the soil property were analyzed for the probability characteristics of domestic soil. In order to calculate the coefficient of variation for the seismic load effect, the MCS technique was applied, and the closed-form equation was applied to calculate the seismic load effect. As a result of calculating the coefficient of variation, the coefficient of variation of the seismic load effect on the weathered soil was analyzed in the range of 0.06~0.15, and the coefficient of variation was judged to be used as basic data for designing the limit state of the shield tunnel on seismic condition.

  • Partial safety factors(PSFs) for Level I reliability based design of caisson type quay walls were calculated. First order reliability method(FORM) based PSFs are the functions of sensitivities of limit state function with respect to design random variables, target reliability index, characteristic values and first moment of random variables. Modified PSFs for water level and resilient water level are newly defined to keep consistency with the current design code. In the numerical example, PSFs were calculated by using a target reliability index. Seismic coefficient is defined to show extreme distribution. It was found that PSFs for seismic coefficient becomes smaller as the return period for design seismic coefficient grows longer.

  • The seismic site coefficients are often used with the seismic hazard maps to develop the design response spectrum at the surface. The site coefficients are most commonly developed deterministically, while the seismic hazarde maps are derived probabilistically. There is, hence, an inherent incompatibility between the two approaches. However, they are used together in the seismic design codes without a clear rational basis. To resolve the fundamental imcompatibility between the site coefficients and hazard maps, this study uses a novel probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) technique that simulates the results of a standard PSHA at a rock outcrop, but integrates the site response analysis function to capture the site amplification effects within the PSHA platform. Another important advantage of the method is its ability to model the uncertainty, variability, and randomness of the soil properties. The new PSHA was used to develop fully probabilistic site coefficients for site classes of the seismic design code and another sets of site classes proposed in Korea. Comparisons highlight the pronounced discrepancy between the site coefficients of the seismic design code and the proposed coefficients, while another set of site coefficients show differences only at selected site classes.

  • In a practical engineering, the equivalent static analysis (E.S.A) and the response spectrum analysis (R.S.A) are generally used for the seismic analysis. The base shears obtained from the E.S.A are invariable no matter how the principal axes of building structures are specified on an analysis program while those from the R.S.A are variable. Accordingly, the designed member size may be changed by how an engineer specify the principal axes of a structure when the R.S.A is used. Moreover, the base shears in the normal direction to the excitation axis are sometimes produced even when an engineer performs a response spectrum analysis in only one direction. This tendency makes the base shear, which is used to calculate the scale-up factor, relatively small. Therefore the scale-up factor becomes larger and it results in uneconomical member sizes. To overcome these disadvantages of the R.S.A, an alternative has been proposed in this study. Three types of example structures were adapted in this study, i.e. bi-direction symmetric structure, one-direction antisymmetric structure and bi-direction antisymmetric structure. The seismic analyses were performed by rotating the principal axes of the example structures with respect to the global coordinate system. The design member forces calculated with the scale-up factor used in the practice were compared with those obtained by using the scale-up factor proposed in this study. It can be seen from this study that the proposed method for the scale-up factor can provide reliable and economical results regardless of the orientation of the principal axes of the structures.
