The extracts of Agrimonia pilosa L. were investigated for the inhibitory effect on the melanin synthesis in B16/F10 mouse melanoma cells as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were 42% in A. pilosa L. 70% ethanol extract at $500{\mu}g/mL$. The protein and mRNA expression of tyrosinase, which are all skin-whitening related factors, showed that A. pilosa L. water and A. pilosa L. 70% ethanol extracts inhibited the protein bio-synthesis in B16F10 melanoma cell. Results indicate that the A. pilosa L. extracts tested in the present study have skin whitening activity and can be used as a functional ingredient for cosmetic compositions.
This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. extracts against food-borne pathogens. First, the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. was extracted with methanol at room temperatures, and fractionation of the methanol extracts from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, and ethyl acetate, and methanol respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The petroleum ether extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. and Perillae folium as compared to each extracts alone. Finally, the growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. against Bacillus Cereus and Salmonella Enteritidis. The petroleum ether extract of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. showed strong antimicrobial activity against Bacillus Cereus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of petroleum ether extract from Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. retarded the growth of Bacillus Cereus more than 24 hours and Salmonella Enteritidis up to 36 hours. The petroleum ether extracts of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. has been shown the antimicrobial effect against Bacillus Cereus and Salmonella Enteritidis. (Korean J Nutrition 38(2): 112~116, 2005)

Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. is a perennial plant, which naturally habitats in whole area of Korea, and where it is popularly used for the traditional remedies. In the present study, A. pilosa Ledeb. extract was prepared to determine the anti-acne effects and application possibility as a cosmetic resource. A pilosa Ledeb. was extracted with methanol and its anti-acne effect against Propionibacterium acnes was investigated via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and paper disk diffusion method. The MIC of A. pilosa Ledeb. extract and triclosan was 0.05 mg/mL and 0.04 mg/mL, respectively. This implies that A. pilosa Ledeb. extract nay be an efficient anti-acne ingredient for cosmetics, considering that it is a crude extract. The paper disk diffusion assay showed that its anti-acne effect was similar to that of triclosan. Furthermore, A. pilosa Ledeb. extract effectively inhibited the growth of several aerobic microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, we examine the stability of the extract to temperature and pH. The extract was very stable to high temperatures ($70{\sim}121^{\circ}C$) and to pH ($pH 2{\sim}11$), suggesting its utilization for cosmetics.
Agromonia pilosa L. has been used as a medicinal plant in traditional folk remedy, and it shows increasing tendency at various sections such as medicine-making material, functional food, and agricultural chemicals using plant or extract. Dosage effect of extract from Agrimonia pilosa L. plant on rat performance experiments were summarized as follows : Body weight was increased with 0.02% dosage treated-rat by 5% as compared to non-treated one, however, decreasing tendency was observed with 0.04% extract of Agrimonia pilosa L. plant fed rat to control Considering feed efficiency was similar result between extract dosage with 0.02% and non-treated rat. The number of leucocyte was increased by dosage-treated level except 0.02% dosage-treated rat. Number of erythrocyte was increased with 0.06% extract dosage-treated rat by 20% as compared to non-treated one.
The purpose of this study was to research about the ingredients for anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle effects of the solvent fractions from Agrimonia pilosa L. hot water (AW) and 70% ethanol (AE) extracts. The electron donating ability of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 84.9, 92.5% in ethyl acetate layer of AW and AE at 1,000 ppm. The superoxide dismutase like activity of solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 61.8% in ethyl acetate layer of AW extracts and 58.0% in buthanol layer of AE extracts at 1,000 ppm. For anti-wrinkle effect, elastase inhibition effect of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 55.2, 70.1% in ethyl acetate layer of AW and AE extracts at 1,000 ppm. And collagenase inhibition effect of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed highest inhibition effect as 90.6% in ethyl acetate layer of AW extract and 88.6% in $n$-butyl alcohol layer of AE extract at 1,000 ppm. All these findings suggested that solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts has an anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle effects.
Eighty-five percent methanol extract of Agrimonia pilosa has antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas syringae pv. lacrymans (bacterial leaf spot pathogen), Ralstonia solanacearum (tomato bacterial wilt pathogen) and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci (Tobacco wild fire pathogen.). The active substance was purified by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC. The molecular weight of the active compound was determined by LC-Mass as 687.2. With NMR analysis, the active substance was identified as Agrimol B.
This study was carried out to investigate the anti oxidative and antitumor activities of medicinal plants for the purpose of developing a functional food. The methanol extracts of Agrimonia pilosa was fractionated with five solvents and examined anti oxidative activities and enzyme inhibitory activities in addition to growth inhibitory activity of human cancer cell. The contents of total phenol compounds in EtOAc and BuOH fraction were 39.89% and 39.56%, respectively. Strong electron donating abilities(>90%) were shown in these fractions and its abilities were 92.90% ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$), 94.47% ($1000\;{\mu}g/ml$) in EtOAc fraction and 93.77% ($500\;{\mu}g/ml$), 92.90% ($1000\;{\mu}g/ml$) in BuOH fraction, respectively. These fractions exhibited more than 50% nitrite scavenging ability and potent inhibition activities to XOase activity (93.06%, 91.73%) at concentration of $1000\;{\mu}g/ml$. In antitumor activity test, hexane fraction showed the strongest growth inhibition activity against HT-29, SNU-1 and HeLa cells. Inhibition levels were 51.50, 90.09% in HT-29, 88.19, 95.11 % in SNU-1 and 42.66, 96.40% in HeLa at the concentration of 50, $100\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively.
The experiment was conducted to increase germination of Agrimonia pilosa seeds, one of the natural medicinal plants, by various treatments, and also the effects of seed treatments on the growth of plants after sowing in field. The optimum temperature for germination of A. pilosa seeds was $20^{\circ}C$ after 20 days stratification duration at $4^{\circ}$, the germination rate than highest, 86% at that temperature. The stratification increased germination rate in all the temperatures treated, shortened $26{\sim}32$ days of germination period and promoted more 20% germination rate than the other treatments. Flowing water, low temperature, $GA_3$ and NaOCl were not effective for germination and high temperature reduced germination rate. At the early growth stage, the plant height was taller $3{\sim}4\;cm$, one or more leaves were increased by the stratification treatments, and also stratification increased the number of leaves per plants 10 or more leaves compare with other treatments at harvesting stages. By stratification, the flowering date was 5 days earlier, June 18th than other treatments due to earlier sprouting.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to establish cephalometric norms of Mongolian adults, which have not previously been reported in orthodontic journals, and to compare them with cephalometric norms of Korean adults. Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 74 Mongolian adults (35 men, 39 women) and 95 Korean adults (52 men, 43 women) with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were obtained. The subjects were chosen by orthodontists of the same ethnic background. Forty craniofacial variables were measured, and groups were compared by analysis of covariance. Results: The cephalometric norms for male and female Mongolian and Korean adults with normal occlusions and well-balanced lateral profiles were established. Sexual dimorphism was found in linear skeletal measurements and vertical skeletal relationships. Compared with Korean adults, Mongolian adults had shorter anterior facial height, more prominent chins, and more upright upper incisors. There were few differences in soft tissue measurements. The differences were statistically significant, but their clinical importance may be limited. Conclusions: Cephalometric differences can be considered, but little difference may exist in the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning of Mongolian and Korean adults.
In this work, the antioxidant activity and total phenolic compound content of 6 fractions of Smallanthus sonchifolius, Agrimonia pilosa, and Lithospermum erythrorhizon extract were investigated. The highest total phenolic compound contents of each plant extracts were obtained from n-butanol ($13.75{\pm}0.21%$) and methylene chloride ($12.89{\pm}1.10%$) fractions (S. sonchifolius), ethyl acetate ($19.69{\pm}1.02%$) and water ($18.72{\pm}0.76%$) fractions (A. pilosa), and n-butanol ($36.26{\pm}1.26%$) and ethyl acetate ($17.66{\pm}0.94%$) fractions (L. erythrorhizon), respectively. As a result of DPPH radical scavenging activity in 10 mg/mL condition, the highest activity were obtained from n-butanol fraction of S. sonchifolius (81.06%), ethyl acetate fraction of A. pilosa (86.32%), and n-butanol fraction of L. erythrorhizon (82.6%), respectively. Also, the highest reducing power was obtained same fractions as well as DPPH adical scavenging activity. Overall, antioxidant activity has relatively closely connected with contents of total phenolic compounds in S. sonchifolius and L. erythrorhizon extracts.
