Covariate selection criteria for controlling confounding bias in a causal study (인과연구에서 중첩편향을 제거하기 위한 공변량선택기준)

  • It is important to control confounding bias when estimating the causal effect of treatment in an observational study. We illustrated that the covariate selection in the causal inference is different from the variable selection in the ANCOVA model. We then investigated the three criteria of covariate selection for controlling confounding bias, which can be used when we have inadequate information to draw a complete causal graph. VanderWeele and Shpitser (2011) proposed one of them and claimed it was better than the other two. We show by example that their criterion also has limitations and some disadvantages. There is no clear winner; however, their criterion is better (if some correction is made on its condition) than the other two because it can remove the confounding bias.

  • 하천유역 내의 인자를 이용하여 댐의 하천유량(stream flow)을 예측하는 일은 수문특성의 연구와 자연재해에 대한 대비 및 수공구조물과 방재시설의 설계 시 중요한 역할을 한다. 이러한 연구는 과거부터 활발히 이루어졌으며, 아직도 보다 높은 정확도의 결과를 얻기 위해 많은 연구들이 이루어지고 있다. 특히 기존의 유역 내 자료를 통해 비선형적 모델인 인공신경망(artificial neural network)을 이용한 하천유량을 예측하는 연구 역시 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 여러 유역인자들 중 하천유량에 가장 영향을 미치는 변수를 추출하고 보다 정확한 예측모델을 구축하는 것이다. 기존의 입력자료 선정기법중의 하나인 상호정보량(mutual information)과 수문기상자료의 비선형 동역학적 성분을 추출하는 웨이블렛 변환(wavelet transform)을 사용하여 인공신경망에 적용시켰다. 인공신경망을 적용하는 경우, 수문자료에 있어서 변수의 선택과 자료의 상태가 강우예측의 결과에 큰 영향을 미친다. 이러한 변수의 선택에 있어서 상호정보량을 바탕으로 한 인공신경망 입력변수 선택기법이 많이 사용되고 있다. 일반적으로 시계열자료는 경향성(trend), 주기성(periodicity) 및 추계학적 성분(stochastic component)의 선형조합으로 가정될 수 있으며, 특히 경향성과 주기성은 시계열 모형을 위해 제거되어야 할 결정론적 성분으로 취급한다. 즉. 수문 기상자료에 포함되어 있는 경향성과 주기성과 같은 비선형 동역학적 잡음(nonlinear dynamical noise)을 제거하고 입력자료의 카오스적 거동을 보이는 성분을 분리하기 위해 웨이블렛 변환을 사용하였다. 대상유역은 한강 유역에 포함되어 있는 충주댐으로 선택하였다. 유역 내 다양한 인자들과 하천유량사이의 상호정보량을 구해 영향력이 가장 큰 변수를 추출하고, 그 자료를 웨이블렛 변환을 적용하여 인공신경망의 입력자료로 사용하였다. 본 논문에서는 위와 같은 과정을 이용해 추정한 하천유량 결과와 기존의 방법인 상호정보량을 이용해 인공신경망을 적용한 결과를 실제자료와 비교하였다.

Comparisons of Color Spaces for Shadow Elimination (그림자 제거를 위한 색상 공간의 비교)

  • Moving object segmentation is an essential technique for various video surveillance applications. The result of moving object segmentation often contains shadow regions caused by the color difference of shadow pixels. Hence, moving object segmentation is usually followed by a shadow elimination process to remove the false detection results. The common assumption adopted in previous works is that, under the illumination variation, the value of chromaticity components are preserved while the value of intensity component is changed. Hence, color transforms which separates luminance component and chromaticity component are usually utilized to remove shadow pixels. In this paper, various color spaces (YCbCr, HSI, normalized rgb, Yxy, Lab, c1c2c3) are examined to find the most appropriate color space for shadow elimination. So far, there have been some research efforts to compare the influence of various color spaces for shadow elimination. However, previous efforts are somewhat insufficient to compare the color distortions under illumination change in diverse color spaces, since they used a specific shadow elimination scheme or different thresholds for different color spaces. In this paper, to relieve the limitations of previous works, (1) the amount of gradients in shadow boundaries drawn to uniform colored regions are examined only for chromaticity components to compare the color distortion under illumination change and (2) the accuracy of background subtraction are analyzed via RoC curves to compare different color spaces without the problem of threshold level selection. Through experiments on real video sequences, YCbCr and normalized rgb color spaces showed good results for shadow elimination among various color spaces used for the experiments.

Exemplar-based Image Inpainting Using Multiple Patches (다중 패치를 이용한 예제 기반 영상 인페인팅)

  • Image inpainting is a technique for removing damaged regions and reconstructing them with visually plausible backgrounds. However, if size of the damaged regions for reconstructing is large, the unexpected results can be obtained due to disconnected structures within reconstructed regions. In this paper, by considering spatial distance information between candidate patches and a damaged patch as well as pixel value difference, an exemplar-based image inpainting using multiple patches is proposed. In conventional exemplar-based image inpainting method, implausible results such as blocking effects or repetition of reconstructed patch may occur by using inappropriately selected single patch. To improve the exemplar-based method, the weighted sum of multiple patches considering both the spatial distance and the pixel value difference between the target patch and the candidate patches is utilized. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method produces better performance of image inpainting than the existing method.

Laser Patterning of Vertically Grown Carbon Nanotubes (수직성장된 탄소나노튜브의 선택적 패터닝)

  • The selective patterning of a carbon nanotube (CNT) forest on a Si substrate has been performed using a femtosecond laser. The high shock wave generated by the femtosecond laser effectively removed the CNTs without damage to the Si substrate. This process has many advantages because it is performed without chemicals and can be easily applied to large-area patterning. The CNTs grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) have a catalyst cap at the end of the nanotube owing to the tip-growth mode mechanism. For the application of an electron emission and biosensor probe, the catalyst cap is usually removed chemically, which damages the surface of the CNT wall. Precise control of the femtosecond laser power and focal position could solve this problem. Furthermore, selective CNT cutting using a femtosecond laser is also possible without any phase change in the CNTs, which is usually observed in the focused ion beam irradiation of CNTs.

Study on the Removal of Water Vapor Using PEI/PEBAX Composite Hollow Fiber Membrane (PEI/PEBAX 복합 중공사 막을 이용한 수분 제거에 관한 연구)

  • In this research, PEI/PEBAX composite hollow fiber membrane was used for the removal of water vapor from gases. PEI (Polyetherimide) substrate membrane was spinned by dry-wet phase inversion method and coated with PEBAX (Polyether block amides) 3533 and PEBAX1657. Fabricated fibers typically had an asymmetric structure of a dense top layer supported by a sponge-like substructure through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). $H_2O/N_2$ mixture gas was used to compare the performance of separation according to temperature, pressure and water activity. The results of PEBAX3533 and PEBAX1657 composite membranes respectively showed $H_2O/N_2$ selectivity of 61.7~118.5 and 85.3~175.4 according to operating conditions. PEBAX3533 composite hollow fiber membranes module showed the water vapor removal of 90%.

Transmit Antenna Selection for Spatial Multiplexing with Per Antenna Rate Control and Successive Interference Cancellation (순차적인 간섭제거를 사용하는 공간 다중화 전송 MIMO 시스템의 전송 안테나 선택 방법에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for transmit antenna selection in a multi-input multi-output(MIMO) spatial multiplexing system with per antenna rate control(PARC) and an ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) receiver. The active antenna subset is determined at the receiver and conveyed to the transmitter using feedback information on transmission rate per antenna. We propose a serial decision procedure consisting of a successive process that tests whether antenna selection gain exists when the antenna with the lowest pre-processing signal to interference and noise ratio(SINR) is discarded at each stage. Furthermore, we show that 'reverse detection ordering', whereby the signal with the lowest SINR is decoded at each stage of successive decoding, widens the disparities among fractions of the whole capacity allocated to each individual antenna and thus maximizes a gain of antenna selection. Numerical results show that the proposed reverse detection ordering based serial antenna selection approaches the closed-loop MIMO capacity and that it induces a negligible capacity loss compared with the heuristic selection strategy even with considerably reduced complexity.
