This study is aimed at elucidating the source rocks of the Hayang strata in the northeastern part of the Gyeongsang Basin. Zircon morphology was analyzed for sandstones from the Iljig, Hupyeongdong, and Jeomgog formations of the Hayang Group and Precambrian gneisses and Jurassic granites. Generally, the composite zircon crystals extracted from the basement rocks and the Hayang Group sandstones show short prismatic to middle prismatic shapes. {110)={100) prism type is dominant and (101) pyramid is the average of the zircon morphology data. Zircon index@) and the shape trend characteristics clearly show that the zircon crystal forms of the Iljig and Hupyeongdong sandstones are dominantly similar to those of the biotite banded gneiss and granite gneiss of Precambrian age. Zircon morphology of the Jeomgog sandstones is dominantly similar to those of the Jurassic granites. Referring to the reported paleocurrent result, the source rocks of the Iljig and Hupyeongdong formations are mainly the Precambrian gneisses distributed in the southeastern and northeastern parts, respectively. And Jeomgog sandstones were mainly derived from Cheongsong granite at Cheongsong uplift region in the eastern part. At the time of completion of the Hupyeongdong sedimentation, the Precambrian basement rocks were severely eroded and formed low topography. During the Jeomgog period, the Jurassic granites which intruded the Precambrian basement began to crop out on the surface. The basin widely extended toward the east and the exposed Jurassic granite of Cheongsong uplift region actively supplied the sediments to the basin.
The metamorphic rocks of Yongin-Anseong area in Gyeonggi massif are composed of high-grade gneisses and schists which are considered as Precambrian basement, and Jurassic granite which intruded the metamorphic rocks. In this paper, we discuss the geochemical characteristics of metamorphic rocks and granites in this area based on REE and Nd isotope geochemistry. And we also discuss the petrogenetic relationship between metamorphic rocks and granites in this area. Most of Nd model ages (T$\_$DM/$\^$Nd/) from the metamorphic rocks range ca. 2.6Ga~2.9Ga which are correspond to the main crustal formation stage in Gyeonggi massif by Lee et. al. (2003). And Nd model ages show that the source material of quartzofeldspathic gneiss is slightly older than that of biotite banded gneiss. In chondrite-normalized rare earth element pattern, the range of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ value from biotite banded gneiss is 37~136, which shows sharp gradient and suggests that biotite banded gneiss was originated from a strongly fractionated source material. However, that of amphibolite is 4.65~6.64, which shows nearly flattened pattern. Particularly, the chondrite normalized REE patterns from the high-grade metamorphic rocks show the REE geochemisoy of original source material before metamorphism. In addition, the values of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ and Nd model ages of granite are 32~40 and 1.69Ga~2.08Ga, respectively, which suggest that the source material of granite is different from that of Precambrian basement such as biotite banded gneiss and quartzofeldspthic gneiss in the area.
In the previous studies on Rb-Sr geochronology, Gyeonggi Massif was known as the oldest rock in Korea Peninsula but the detailed sequence of geochronology was not studied yet. In the present study, some of whole rock isochrons considered here can be geochronologically grouped as follows: The ages of leucocratic gneisses at Yangpyeong, and augen and banded gneisses at Anyang show 2200 to 2300 m.y. which may represent the time of the Massif formation or an igneous intrusion. The age of the granite gneiss distributed in Yangpyeong area shows about 1400 m.y., which apparently represents the intrusion time of the gneiss. The age of the extremely altered metamorphic rock shows about 500 m.y., which may represent the time of a Caledonian orogenic event probably with hydrothermal activities. The other episodic ages of 800 to 900 m.y. which was widely observed through the Massif, may represent the ages of Precambrian igneous activities or regional metamorphism in the Massif. It seems to be reasonable that the ages of 120 to 270 m.y. show the times of Mesozoic and Late Palaeozoic Plutonisms in the Massif.

The Precambrian granitic gneisses are widely distributed in the Danyang-Yecheon area, eastern part of Korea, where the Ryeongnam massif borders the Ogcheon fold belt. They are composed of migmatitic, biotite granitic, garnet-bearing and granoblastic granitic gneisses. The common joint sets of the granitic gneiss are NE and NS directions, which are probably related to the effects of Daebo orogeny and Bulgugsa disturbance, respectively. Mineral assemblages of the banded gneiss xenolith in the garnet-bearing granitic gneiss are quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-mus-covite-orthoclase and quartz-plagioc1ase-biotite-garnet, belonging to the amphibolite facies. The granoblastic granitic gneiss is felsic, metaluminous, and granitic, and shows subalkaline trend. The garnet-biotite geothermometry of garnet-bearing granitic gneiss yields 640$^{\circ}$-708$^{\circ}C$ at pressure of 4 kb.
The NE-trending Honam shear zone is a broad, dextral strike-slip fault zone between the southern margin of the Okcheon Belt and the Precambrian Yeongnam Massif in South Korea and is parallel to the trend of Sinian deformation that is conspicuous in Far East Asia. In this paper, we report geochemical and isotopic(Sr and Nd) data of mylonitic quartz-muscovite Precambrian gneisses and surrounding foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids near the Myeongho area in the Yecheon Shear Zone, a representative segment of the Honam Shear Zone. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids commonly plot in the granodiorite field($SiO_2=61.9-67.1\;wt%$ and $Na_2O+K_2O=5.21-6.99\;wt%$) on $SiO_2$ vs. $Na_2O+K_2O$ discrimination diagram, whereas quartz-muscovite Precambrian orthogneisses plot in the granite field. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids are mostly calcic and calc-alkalic and are dominantly magnesian in a modified alkali-lime index(MALI) and Fe# [$=FeO_{total}(FeO_{total}+MgO)$] versus $SiO_2$ diagrams, which correspond with geochemical characteristics of Cordilleran Mesozoic batholiths. The foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids have molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 0.89 to 1.10 and are metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, indicating I type. In contrast, Paleoproterozoic orthogneisses have peraluminous compositions, with molar ratios of $Al_2O_3/(CaO+Na_2O+K_2O)$ ranging from 1.11 to 1.22. On trace element spider diagrams normalized to the primitive mantle, the large ion lithophile element(LILE) enrichments(Rb, Ba, Th and U) and negative Ta-Nb-P-Ti anomalies of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids and mylonitized quartz-muscovite gneisses in the Yecheon Shear Zone are features common to subduction-related granitoids and are also found in granitoids from a crustal source derived from the arc crust of active continental margin. ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(T)$ and initial Sr-ratio ratios of foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids with suggest the involvement of upper crust-derived melts in granitoid petrogenesis. Foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids in the study area, together with the Yeongju Batholith, show not changing contents of specific elements(Ti, P, Zr, V and Y) from shear zone to the area near the shear zone. These results suggest that no volume changes and geochemical alterations in fluid-rich foliated hornblende-biotite granitoids may occur during deformation, which mass transfer by fluid flow into the shear zone is equal to the mass transfer out of the shear zone.
To get the various data on geological information, distributional ratios and characteristics of constituent rocks with geologic ages and rock types were obtained by ArcGIS 10.1 program, digital geologic and geomorphic maps of 1:250,000 scale in Jeonnam and Gwangju areas. In the Jeonnam area, geologic ages can be largely divided into 7, in which their distribution ratios show decreasing trends in the order of Cretaceous, Precambrian, Jurassic, Quaternary, Age-unknown, Carbonifeorus-Triassic and Triassic, and the former fours make the most prevailing ratios of 94.80%. Rock types in the area can be assorted into 57 ones, in which major 7 ones occupy the dominant ratio of 71.68%. Among them, Kav (acidic volcanics+rhyolite and rhyolitic tuff) show much more distribution ratios than the others. It shows more aspects distributed in north, west, middle, east and south parts, especially in Sinan-Mogpo-Yeongam of west and Haenam of south parts in the area, respectively. On the other hand, geological ages in Gwangju area can be largely divided into 5, in which their distribution ratios show decreasing trends in the order of Jurassic, Quaternary, Cretaceous, Precambrian and Age-unknown, and the former fours occupy almost the whole ratio of 98.95%. Rock types in the area are 12 ones, in which major four ones make up the dominant value of 91.30%. Among them, Jurassic granites of the most dominant value are mostly occupied in the southwest-northeast part of the area. Next dominative Quaternary alluvium is mostly developed along the Yeongsan river, the Hwangryong river and their channel junction. And Yongdu and Donggye plains are well developed around the Yeongsan riverline, and channel junction of the Yeongsan and Hwangryong rivers in the area, respectively.
Based on digital geologic and geomorphic maps of 1 : 250,000 scale, distributive ratios of rock types were obtained by ArcGIS 9.0 program in the Gyeonggi, Seoul and Incheon areas of the Gyeonggi province. In the Gyeonggi area, 37 rock types are developed, and their geologic ages can be classified into Precambrian, Age-unknown, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Quatemary. Among them, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of Jurassic Daebo granites, Precambrian banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex and Quatemary alluvium, all of which comprise about 83.7% of the rock types in the area. In the Seoul and Incheon areas, 10 and 15 rock types are developed, respectively., with the firmer being classified into Precambrian, Jurassic and Quatemary, and the latter into Precambrian, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Quatemary. In the Seoul area, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, Daebo granites and alluvium, which consist of 95.5% of the rocks in the area. In the Incheon area, distributive ratios are decreasing in the order of alluvium, Daebo granites, banded gneiss of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, reclaimed land, and schists of Gyeonggi gneiss complex, which occupy about 96.2% of the rocks in the area. The ratio of alluvium in the Incheon area is greater than that of Gyeonggi and Seoul areas, and the ratio of reclaimed land in the Incheon area is greater that of the Seoul, which can be attributed to the recent reclamation of the land for the industrial results such as new town development along the coastline of the Gyeonggi Bay.
Asbestos minerals are found at rocks and soils of the Hongseong and Bibong serpentine mines, western part of Chungnam. The area consists of and metasediment, and Mesozoic igneous intrusives with minor age-known gneiss complexes and Mesozoic sediments. With detailed geological investigations, rock samples for the serpentinite and amphibolite areas are collected at sites containing asbestos. Representative asbestos and rock samples are analysed by PLM, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Serpentinites are found as steeply dipping faults with adjacent gneiss complex to the NNE direction. Repeated alteration, including serpenitization and talcification, is found at the emplacement direction for the serpentinite body. Amphibollites occur as intrusives and stratiforms within the Precambrian gneiss complex. Serpentinite and amphibolite (or amphibole schist) contain amphiboles either as asbestiform or non-asbestiform. Varying amounts of asbestos minerals, including chrysotile, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos, are found within the serpentinites. The asbestos minerals are found near the cracks or fractures and along the bedding plane. They occur as cross fiber, slip fiber and mass fiber types. Varying amounts of amphibole asbestos minerals, such as tremolite and actinolite asbestos, are found within amphibolites and as a mass fiber type. Overall results suggest that rocks of the serpentine mines contain serpentine and amphibole type asbestos minerals originated from the hydrothermal alteration. Considering construction nearby the mines and environmental risks by the asbestos, additional land management plans are required.
