  • Dynamic response of a hull mounted sonar(HMS) to shocks transmitted through hull structures is analyzed and then the structural reliability of the sonars is evaluated. Finite element model of the hull mounted sonar is established and the transient responses to the shock is calculated using MSC.NASTRAN. According to BV043, the maximum allowable accelerations at the foundation of the sonar are converted from the shock spectra allowable for HMS. They are applied vertically and horizontally, respectively, using the large mass method. The structural reliability is evaluated by comparing the von-Mises stresses with the material yield stress. The drum for sensors shows a high reliability owing to mounts by which the shock waves from the base structure are well protected. However, the mounts between the base structure and the drum to mount sensors show a high stress intensity. The base structure also reveals a high stress intensity at the connection points to the hull.

  • Ship hull Vibration is caused by troubling measure instruments installed in the ship, fatigue of the hull girder. Vibration has been studied by the View point of anti-Vibration. However, the theoretical calculation values of the Vibration analysis were not obtained accurately. Therfore, in this paper, Vibration analysis were made on the two (cylinder form, ship form) of ship hull girder by the transfer matrix method. The super-structure length was determined to be 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, percentage of the ship's length from the stern. The results of analysis by the transfer matrix method are as follow. 1. Natural frequency may be determined by the order of node numbers and superstructure length. 2. Natural frequency inereased when the ship form is a finess and increasing ratio followed by high order of node numbers.

  • The early damage detection of large structures is very important to prevent the disaster due to its global failure. In this paper, a crack detection method of the beam-analogy structure based on the wavelet transformation of mode shape is presented. The method can effectively detect the singularity of mode shape caused to the inconsistency of bending moment and shear force at the damaged part using the discrete wavelet of mode shape and its inverse transforms of detail components. To investigate the validity and the applicability of the presented damage detection method, numerical simulation and experiment are carried out for the idealized beam and the real ship structures.

  • In this study, a numerical estimation method for 3D underwater radiated noise pattern using hull vibration and total acoustic power of the vibrating structure in the far-field is proposed. The underwater radiated noise pattern is known to be predicted using the vibration signals and radiation efficiency of each surface patch. But it is very difficult to know radiation efficiency of each surface patch which is one of important factors to calculate the 3D underwater radiated noise pattern. Instead of using radiation efficiency of each patch, the underwater radiated noise level is modified with the total acoustic power of the vibrating structure. The suggested estimation method for underwater radiated noise pattern is discussed with numerical model.

  • Many mechanical systems including ships and/or offshore structures have poor dynamic response characteristics such as undesirable natural frequencies and undesirable mode shapes. It is mandatory to redesign the structure. In this paper a procedure for the dynamic redesign of an undamped structural system is presented. The method which uses a penalty function with a penalty term containing error in equilibrium for a given vibration mode may have a shortcoming. This method includes unconstrained eigenvector degrees of freedom as unknowns. In the work developed here, only constrained mode shape changes are used in the solution procedure, resulting in a reduction of the unnecessary calculations. Among the set of equations which characterizes the redesign of the structural systems, the under constrained problem is discussed here and formulated as an optimization problem, with an optimal criterion such as minimum change or minimum structural weight of the system. Four simple numerical applications illustrate the efficiency of the method. The method can be applied to the vibration problems of ships and/or offshore structures with an implementation of the commercial FE codes.

  • The propeller induced forces acting on a hull are surface forces and bearing forces. The bearing forces are the forces acting directly on the propeller which are transferred to the hull through the propeller bearings. The surface forces are those which act by fluid pressure directly on the various hull surfaces. Because the surface force is main source to oscillate stern constructions and deckhouse, the estimation of surface force is very important to predict response of forced vibration of that. The estimation methods were statistical analysis method, theoretical analysis method and method through model test.

  • This paper presents an efficient method to analyze noise and vibration of marine diesel engines mounted on flexible hull structure. The analysis model should in general include the hull structure, leading to lots of computational efforts. To minimize the computational efforts, in this paper, the transfer synthesis utilizing the receptance at the mounting points is proposed. The procedure is then verified by comparing the results with those from the full model calculation. The effects of flexible hull structure on the acoustic power from engine block are finally investigated. It is found that the effect of the hull is significant when the receptance of hull structure is similar to or greater than that of mount or engine block.
