The tangential breast intensity modulated radiotherapy (T-B IMRT) technique, which uses the same tangential fields as conventional 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) plans with physical wedges, was analyzed in terms of the calculated dose distribution feature and dosimetric accuracy of beam delivery during treatment. T-B IMRT plans were prepared for 15 patients with breast cancer who were already treated with conventional 3D-CRT. The homogeneity of the dose distribution to the target volume was improved, and the dose delivered to the normal tissues and critical organs was reduced compared with that in 3D-CRT plans. Quality assurance (QA) plans with the appropriate phantoms were used to analyze the dosimetric accuracy of T-B IMRT. An ionization chamber placed at the hole of an acrylic cylindrical phantom was used for the point dose measurement, and the mean error from the calculated dose was $0.7{\pm}1.4%$. The accuracy of the dose distribution was verified with a 2D diode detector array, and the mean pass rate calculated from the gamma evaluation was $97.3{\pm}2.9%$. We confirmed the advantages of a T-B IMRT in the dose distribution and verified the dosimetric accuracy from the QA performance which should still be regarded as an important process even in the simple technique as T-B IMRT in order to maintain a good quality.
In projection radiography, two types of digital imaging systems are currently available, computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR): a difference between them can be stated in terms of dose and image quality. In the Department of Radiology our hospital, a flat-panel DR equipment (Digital diagnost, Philips) and two CR systems (ADC Compact plus digitizer, AGFA) are employed. Eight standard radiographic examinations (Skull AP, Skull LAT, Chest PA, Chest LAT, Abdomen AP, L-spine AP, L-spine LAT, Pelvis AP) were considered: doses delivered to patients in terms of both entrance skin dose (ESD) were calculated and compared in order to study the dosimetric discrepancies between CR and DR. Assessment of image quality is undertaken by Consultant Radiologists to ensure that the quality criteria for diagnostic radiographic images of the European guidelines were met. Results showed that both ESD in DR are lower than that in CR; all images met the criteria in the European Guidelines for both modalities and were used for reporting by the radiologists. Since the operators are the same and the image quality is comparable in both modalities, this study shows that in the considered examinations, DR can perform better than CR from a dosimetric point of view.
A conversing beam is firstly designed for radiosurgery by a neurosugern Lars Leksell in 1949 with orthogonal x-rays tube moving through horizontal moving arc to focusing the beam at target center. After 2 decades he composits 201 source of the Co-60 for gamma knife which beams focused at locus. Sveral linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery using the circular collimated beam which size range for 0.4~4.0 cm in a diameter by non-coplanar multiarc have been developed over the decades. The irregular lesions can be treated by superimposing with several spherical shots of radiation over the tumour volume. Linac based techniques include the use of between 4 and 11 non-co-planar arcs and a dynamic rotation technique and use photon beam energies in the range of 6~10 MV. Reviews of the characteristics of several treatment techniques can be found in the literature (Podgorsak 1989, Schell 1991). More in recent, static conformal beams defined by custom shaped collimators or a mini- or micro-multileaf collimator (mMLC) have been used in SRS. Finally, in the last few years, intensity-modulated mMLC SRS has also been introduced. Today, many commercial and in-house SRS programs have also introduced non-invasive immobilization systems include the cyberknife and tomotherapy and proton beam. This document will be compared the characteristics of dose distribution of radiosurgery as introduced gamma knife, BrainLab include photon knife in-house SRS program and cyberknife in currently wide used for a cranial SRS.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively investigate the upper and lower control limits of treatment planning parameters using EBT film based delivery quality assurance (DQA) results and to analyze the results of statistical process control (SPC) in helical tomotherapy (HT). A total of 152 patients who passed or failed DQA results were retrospectively included in this study. Prostate (n = 66), rectal (n = 51), and large-field cancer patients, including lymph nodes (n = 35), were randomly selected. The absolute point dose difference (DD) and global gamma passing rate (GPR) were analyzed for all patients. Control charts were used to evaluate the upper and lower control limits (UCL and LCL) for all the assessed treatment planning parameters. Treatment planning parameters such as gantry period, leaf open time (LOT), pitch, field width, actual and planning modulation factor, treatment time, couch speed, and couch travel were analyzed to provide the optimal range using the DQA results. The classification and regression tree (CART) was used to predict the relative importance of variables in the DQA results from various treatment planning parameters. We confirmed that the proportion of patients with an LOT below 100 ms in the failure group was relatively higher than that in the passing group. SPC can detect QA failure prior to over dosimetric QA tolerance levels. The acceptable tolerance range of each planning parameter may assist in the prediction of DQA failures using the SPC tool in the future.

The dose distributions within the real volumes of tumor targets and critical organs during internal target volume-based intensity-modulated radiation therapy (ITV-IMRT) for liver cancer were recalculated by applying the effects of actual respiratory organ motion, and the dosimetric features were analyzed through comparison with gating IMRT (Gate-IMRT) plan results. The ITV was created using MIM software, and a moving phantom was used to simulate respiratory motion. The doses were recalculated with a 3 dose-volume histogram (3DVH) program based on the per-field data measured with a MapCHECK2 2-dimensional diode detector array. Although a sufficient prescription dose covered the PTV during ITV-IMRT delivery, the dose homogeneity in the PTV was inferior to that with the Gate-IMRT plan. We confirmed that there were higher doses to the organs-at-risk (OARs) with ITV-IMRT, as expected when using an enlarged field, but the increased dose to the spinal cord was not significant and the increased doses to the liver and kidney could be considered as minor when the reinforced constraints were applied during IMRT plan optimization. Because the Gate-IMRT method also has disadvantages such as unsuspected dosimetric variations when applying the gating system and an increased treatment time, it is better to perform a prior analysis of the patient's respiratory condition and the importance and fulfillment of the IMRT plan dose constraints in order to select an optimal IMRT method with which to correct the respiratory organ motional effect.

Purpose : This study was peformed for the evaluation of the feasibility and toxicity of hypofractionated radiation therapy for early glottic cancer Methods and Materials : From February 1999 to February 2000, 20 patients with Histologically confirmed Stage I, II glottic cancer were enrolled into this study. There were 18 males and 2 females, the median age of the patients was 59 years. The distribution of stage distribution was as fellows; T1aN0-16 patients, T1bN0-1 patient, T2N0-3 patients. Eighteen patients underwent laryngomicroscopic biopsy only, and two patients underwent laser cordectomy. All patients received radical radiation therapy (2.5 Gy per fraction, 24 fractions, total 60 Gy). Median duration of treatment was 36 days (range $31\~45\;days$). Results : Radiation therapy were well tolerated. Most common acute reactions were odynophagia and hoarseness, and these reactions resolved after radiation therapy. There were one case of RTOG grade 3 odynophagia $(5\%)$, six cases of grade 3 hoarseness $(30\%)$. Response of radiation therapy was evaluated one month after completion of treatment. All patients revealed complete response. During follow up, total three cases of treatment failure were detected. two cases were local recurrence in 10 and 13 months of radiation therapy and one case was local recurrence and distant metastasis in 2 months of radiation therapy. Conclusion : This hypofractionated radiation therapy schedule was feasible and effective for control of early glottic cancer But longer follow up time would be required to assess the long-term disease control and the late complication by shortening radiation therapy duration.

A waste container, one of the key components of a multi-barrier system in a potential high level radioactive waste (HLW) repository in Korea ensures the mechanical stability against the lithostatic pressure of a deep geologic medium and the swelling pressure of the bentonite buffer. Also, it delays potential release of radionuclides for a certain period of time, before it is corroded by intruding impurities. Even though the material of a waste container is carefully chosen and its manufacturing processes are under quality assurance processes, there is a possibility of initial defects in a waste container during manufacturing. Also, during the deposition of a waste container in a repository, there is a chance of an incident affecting the integrity of a waste container. In this study, the appropriate Features, Events, and Processes(FEP's) to describe these incidents and the associated scenario on radionuclide release from a container to the biosphere are developed. Then the total system performance assessment on the Initial waste Container Failure (ICF) scenario was carried out by the MASCOT-K, one of the probabilistic safety assessment tools KAERI has developed. Results show that for the data set used in this paper, the annual individual dose for the ICF scenario meets the Korean regulation on the post closure radiological safety of a repository.

Chemical management of annulus gas system is carried out for the purpose of ensuring the safety and reliability of the system via securing the integrity of the system, detecting the D$_2$O in-leakage of coolant and/or moderator, and reducing the radiation dose. Since the quality of CO_2$ gas, which is used as a filling gas for annulus gas system at CANDU plants, has a propound effect on the integrity of the system material and the radiation dose, CO_2$ gas of high quality is needed. If the quality of CO_2$ gas does not meet the specification, it may give rise to undesirable effect not only on the annulus gas system, but also on the environment due to the production of radioactive nuclei. Therefore, it is very important to check the impurities of CO_2$ gas. Based on this background, the inventories of C-14 and Ar-41 in CO_2$ gas that is supplied as annulus gas were estimated using the data on concentrations of the impurities of $CO_2$ such as C, N_2$ and Ar. The results of this study is expect to give useful information on optimization of CO_2$ impurities maintenance and management of gaseous radioactive wastes produced at CANDU plants.
High dose rate brachytherapy is a cancer treatment that intensively irradiates radiation to tumors by inserting isotopes with high dose rates into the body. For such a treatment, it is necessary to deliver an accurate dose to the tumor tissue through an accurate treatment plan while delivering only a minimum dose to the normal tissue. Therefore, it is very important to check the location accuracy of the source through accurate Quality Assurance (QA) in clinical practice. However, since the source position is determined using a ruler, automatic radiographer, video monitor, etc. in clinical practice, it yields inaccurate results. In this study, a semiconductor dosimeter using CsPbI2Br and CsPbIBr2 was fabricated. And, in order to analyze whether it is more suitable for the relative QA dosimeter for brachytherapy device among the two materials, the radiation detection ability of each was compared and evaluated. In order to evaluate the radiation detection ability in brachytherapy, the reproducibility and linearity of the two materials were evaluated in 192IR. In the reproducibility evaluation, CsPbI2Br presented a Relative Standard Deviatio(RSD) of 0.98% and CsPbIBr2 presented an RSD of 3.45%. In the linearity evaluation, the coefficient of determination (R2) of CsPbI2Br was presented as 0.9998, and the R2 of CsPbIBr2 was presented as 0.9994. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that CsPbI2Br was more stable in radiation detection while satisfying the evaluation criteria in the dosimeter manufactured in this experiment. Therefore, CsPbI2Br material is suitable for application as a relative dosimeter for radiation detection in brachytherapy devices.
