  • In this paper, we propose a better solution for swimming plans of an articulated underwater robot, Crabster, with a view point of biomimetics. As a biomimetic model of underwater organisms, we chose diving beetles structurally similar to Crabster. Various swimming locomotion of the diving beetle has been observed and sorted by robotics technology through experiments with a high-speed camera and image processing software Image J. Subsequently, coordinated patterns of rhythmic movements of the diving beetle are reproduced by simple control parameters in a parameter space which make it easy to control trajectories and velocities of legs. Furthermore, a simulation was implemented with an approximated model to predict the motion of the robot under development based on the classified forward and turning locomotion. Consequently, we confirmed the applicability of parameterized leg locomotion to the articulated underwater robot through the simulated results by the approximated model.

  • In this research, a comprehensive study is performed upon the design of a quadruped walking robot. In advance, the walking posture and skeletal configuration of the vertebrate are analyzed to understand quadrupedal locomotion, and the roles of limbs during walking are investigated. From these, it is known that the forelimbs just play the role of supporting their body and help vault forward, while most of the propulsive force is generated by hind limbs. In addition, with the study of the stances on walking and energy efficiency, design criteria and control method for a quadruped walking robot are derived. The proposed controller, though it is simple, provides a useful framework for controlling a quadruped walking robot. In particular, introduciton of a new rhythmic pattern generator relieves the heavy computational burden because it does not need any computation on kinematics. Finally, the proposed method is validated via dynamic simulations and implementing in a quadruped walking robot, called AiDIN(Artificial Digitigrade for Natural Environment).

  • Jumping is considered as a suitable way for realizing fast locomotion on the ground. As for the issue of developing mobile robots that can jump up and forward enough for accomplishing useful missions, this paper first introduces two types of jumping principles that are found in biological animals or insects. We also present how the principles are applied to several jumping robot examples that include outcomes for the past a few years and also our recent one. Design ideas and features of the robots are explained and compared in order to discuss important issues and guidelines for the design of jumping robots.

  • A nonlinear navigation filter for biomimetic robot using analytic approximation of mean and covariance of state variable is proposed. The approximations are performed at the time update step in the filter structure. The mean is approximated to the 3rd order of Taylor's series expansion of true mean and the covariance is approximated to the 3rd order either. The famous EKF is a nonlinear filtering method approximating the mean to 1st order and the covariance to the 3rd order. The UKF approximate them to the higher orders by numerical method. The proposed method derived a analytical approximation of them for navigation system and therefore don't need so called sigma point transformation in UKF. The simulation results show that the proposed method can be a good alternative of UKF in the systems which require less computational burden.

  • Cellulose Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is attractive as a biomimetic actuator because of its merits: it is lightweight, operates in dry conditions, has a large displacement output, has a low actuation voltage, and has low power consumption. Cellulose is regenerated so as to align its microfibrils, which results in a piezoelectric paper. When chemically bonded and mixed with carbon nanotubes, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, tin oxides, the cellulose EAPap can be used as a hybrid nanocomposite that has versatile properties and that can meet the requirements of many application devices. This paper presents trends in recent research on the cellulose EAPap, mainly on material preparation and its use in devices, including biosensors, chemical sensors, flexible transistors, and actuators. This paper also explains wirelessly driving technology for the cellulose EAPap, which is attractive for use in biomimetic robotics and micro-aerial vehicles.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Genibo program robot-based learning(R-Learning) on a pre-schooler's mental state. To achieve above study purpose, the subject of this study was selected 46(teacher 2, five years old pre-schooler 44) from pre-school childrens in Kyongki Y city(R-Learning activity participants group 21: boys 10, girls 11. non-participants 25: boys 13, girls 12). R-Learning program is consist of 5 field about 20 contents using Genibo robot, were applied to the experimental group and the pre-post test was conducted using the EQ assessment tool and observations. The data were analyzed by t-test using the SPSS(ver 18.0) program. The results were as follows: First, the exposure of robots to pre-schoolers in practical situation has shown positive influence to the children's emotional well-being. Positive improvements were observed in the four sub categories of the EQ assessment after exposure. Second, the Genibo used for this study, is a biomimetic AI based robot mimicking the behavior of a pet dog. This is related more or less to the specifications of a pre-school education where animals are used as a 'friendly medium' to facilitate the learning process. Third, the robot exposure gave benefit to all the ones in the sample, regardless of sex. Furthermore, It is suggested that promising potential for robots to be utilized as a new educational media plus facilitator, R-Learning is related more or less to the specifications of a pre-school education where animals are used as a 'friendly medium' to facilitate the learning process, and when applying them for education, stereotyping the likes of sex is overrated - instead, the focus should be more on the pre-schoolers' / childrens' individual traits, learning curve differences and alike.

  • A proper walking pattern is to be assigned for a walk of multi-legged robots. For the purpose of identifying a good walking pattern for multi-legged robots, this paper consider a simple model of quadruped robotic walking and analyze its walking balance based on the centroid of foot polygons formed in every step. A performance index to estimate the walking balance is also proposed. Simulation studies show that the centroid trajectory of foot polygons and the walking balance in a common quadruped walking are different according to the walking pattern employed. Based on the walking balance index and a bio-mimetic aspect, a useful walking pattern for quadruped robots is finally addressed.

  • A traditional fabrication method is very difficult to make small robots using embedded sensors, actuators and connectors. Fortunately, Shape Deposition Manufacturing can provide an alternative method, and it has many benefits. Firstly, the weight of robot can be lighter, as it can be consisted of composite materials. Secondly, SDM can make simple robot structures because this approach does not need to use connectors and fasteners. Lastly, SDM gives stiffness and flexibility at the specific parts. Therefore, in this paper, we present a design of 3 segment legs organized by SDM, what the SDM approach is, and compare SDM method with 3 segment prototype legs which uses a traditional approach and made by DGIST.

  • A new bio-mimetic actuator is proposed. The actuator realizes bidirectional actuation since it is with a stretched film antagonistically configured with compliant electrodes. Also, it is distinguished from existing actuators with respect to the controllability of its compliance. Bidirectional actuation and compliance controllability are important characteristics for the artificial muscle actuator and the proposed one accomplishes these requirements without any mechanical substitute or complicated algorithms. In this paper its basic concepts and working principles are introduced with static and dynamic analysis. Control strategies for displacement as well as stiffness are introduced and experimental results are given to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methods. In addition, an example of robotic actuating devices is given to confirm the usefulness of the proposed actuator.

  • It is well-known that bio-systems does not calculate inverse dynamics for trajectory planning, but they move by proper modulation of system impedances. Inspired by bio-systems, a biomimetic trajectory planning method is proposed in this work. This scheme is based on employment of redundant actuation which prevails in bio-systems. We discuss that for the generation of the biomimetic trajectory, intelligent structure of bio-systems plays an important role. Redundant actuation and kinematic redundancy fall into such a category of intelligent structure. The proposed biomimetic trajectory planning modulates the complete dynamic behavior such as natural frequencies and damping ratios by using the intelligent structure. Experimental work is illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed biomimetic trajectory planning for a five-bar mechanism with redundant actuators.
