  • In this study, numerical computations were performed to scrutinize the effect of the size of coal particles on reactive flow fields and concentration distribution of product gases for five cases with four different particle sizes (40 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 60 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 120 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 140 $\mu\textrm{m}$) in an axisymmetric cylindrical coal gasifier in which Alaska Usibelli subbituminous coals were gasified. Predictions showed that coal particle size affected the concentration distribution of product gases. When coals of 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were gasified, the maximum average concentrations of major products, H$_2$and CO, were predicted at the exit of the gasifier. The average mole fractions of CO and H, were shown to be 0.62, and 0.16 (dry basis, inert free), respectively. The cold gas efficiency of 83% was also predicted for the same particle size of 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • Catalytic dissociation reaction was studied in order to transform waste plastics to oil by using noble metal supported catalysts. XRD, SEM, and GC/MSD analysis were performed to find the crystalline structure and shape, and product distribution. Generally, dissociation reaction occurs at low temperature compared to pyrolysis. Dissociation reaction has advantage of gasoline yield with respect to pyrolysis which products mainly $C_1\simC_4$. The result of dissociation reaction, gasoline was obtained much as a product. $C_5\simC_{11}$ compounds were produced as a gasoline product on Pt-zeolite among noble metal catalysts at $340^{\circ}C$. The conversion of dissociation reaction of waste plastics on the prepared catalyst was above 70% over $340^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to study unconsolidated sediments upstream of the Soyang Dam, seismic refraction data were recorded along five profiles of 94 m length. Receiver interval and record length were 2 m and 204 ms, respectively. Recorded data were analyzed using the traveltime tomography and delay-time methods in order to reveal sediment distribution in the investigation site. The acoustic basements are buried at approximately 14 m deep and their thickness shallows to southeast approaching to a hill. On the basement, pre-existing sediments deposited before construction of the Soyang dam lies. This sedimentary layer is composed of paleo-soil and sandy sediments. Above this layer, recent sediments comprise the top layer which is believed to have been deposited since the formation of the dam. Average thickness of this uppermost layer is approximately 1.6 m, which is much thicker than in the downstream.

  • Synthesis of n-perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride(n-PFOSF), which is valuable precursor perfluoro-chemicals, was studied by electrochemical fluorination(ECF). Of prime concern was to investigate the cyclic voltamograms of Ni electrode in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride(AHF) with and without the reactants and to measure fluorine evolution potential. In a batch cell, chronoampherometric electrolysis and various chemical analysis such as GC, GC/MS and IR were used to understand the amphere change of electrode and the reaction paths. Fluorine equilibrium potential was found to be about 2.8V(vs. $Cu/CuF_2$) from the cyclic voltammograms and decay curves of anode potential in AHF. In batch processes, the ECF proceeded in two distinguished steps. The first step proceeded electrochemically and the second one chemically. Under 7V(vs. $Cu/CuF_2$), amount of crude products was proportional to the applied anode potential. Above 7V(vs. $Cu/CuF_2$), it had a hundred percentage with weight ratio of reactants and productivity of PFOSF was almost constant.

  • Non-destructive gamma-ray spectrometry was carried out on the spent PWR fuel assemblies at the spent fuel pool of reactor-site. Attention was focused on the determination of burnup distribution and cooling time. For the measurement of burnup distribution, the concentration ratio of $^{134}$ Cs$^{137}$ Cs was used and the results showed these ratios varied with the positions of assemblies in the core during their irradiation. For the measurement of cooling time, $^{144}$ Ce$^{137}$ Cs was used and the results were agreed considerably well with the operator declared cooling time.

  • Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction was studied over MWW zeolite with independently developed two pores (circular and straight) and MFI zeolite with intercrossed sinusoidal and straight pores in order to investigate the effect of pore structure on their catalytic behavior. MWW and MFI zeolites with similar acidity exhibited commonly high conversion and slow deactivation in the MTO reaction, but their product selectivities were considerably different: linear hydrocarbons of $C_3-C_9$ were mainly produced on MWW, while the yield of $C_2{^=}$ and aromatics were high on MFI. Polyaroamatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were accumulated on MWW, but a small amount of benzene and aromatics on MFI. The impregnation of phosphorous on MWW caused significant decreases in the catalytic activity and toluene adsorption, but the decreases were relatively small on MFI. Although the straight pores of MWW were inactive in the MTO reaction due to the accumulation of PAHs, its circular pores which suppressed the formation of PAHs sustained catalytic activity for the production of linear hydrocarbons. Therefore, the impregnation of phosphorous on the circular pores of MWW caused a significant decrease in catalytic activity. The phosphorous impregnation on the cross sections of MFI altered the product selectivity due to the neutralization of strong acid sites, but catalytic deactivation was negligible. The difference of MWW and MFI zeolites in the MTO reaction was explained by their difference in pore structure.

  • An instant labelling technique for lyophilized pyrophosphate with $^{99m}$Tc is described labelling yield of about 90% is obtained at the pH range 3.5-5.5 on reconstitution with sodium pertechnetate-$^{99m}$ Tc solution. The final product is controlled by a modified two dimensional paper chromatography using 85% methanol and 0.85% saline, and biodynamic investigations are performed on white mice. Generally, the less amount of stannous chloride is used. the higher labelling yield is obtained. The molar ratio of pyrophosphate to stannous chloride of 10 : 1 ~ 50 : 1 is sufficient. The more amount of reduced unbound $^{99m}$Tc is injected, the more radioactivity is incorporated in the liver. Thus. the cause of the false bone-imaging is attributable to the presence of reduced unbound $^{99m}$Tc which is known to be well adsorbed to oxidized tin colloidals. The maximum uptake ratio of bone: liver in mice, in weight basis, 35 : 1 is achieved in lime of 60 min. or so. Tile preparation is suitable for clinical investigations on patients with bone diseases.iseases.

  • The purpose of this study is to produce high putity composite powder composed of Fe-oxide, Mn-oxide and Mn-ferrite having superior homogencity in composition and particle size distribution by co-roasting process. Binary component metal (Fe, Mn) chloride solutions were produced by dissolving mill scale and ferro-mangancse alloy in hydrochloric acid. These chloride solutions contained the impurities such as SiO$_{2}$, P, Al, Ca and Na, which were originated from the Fe/Mn source materials. The neutralization and polymeric coagulant method were adoped to refine the hydrochloric liquor. When pH is far below the isoelectric point (pH 2-3), the SiO$_{2}$ was the most effectively reduced element, while other impurities remained unchanged. By increasing pH above 3, most of the impurities could be reduced effectively due to the coprecipitation reaction. The polymeric coagulants such as poly vinyl alcohol, resin amine and ammonium molybdate were found to have no effect on the spray roaster designed by the authors. The produced oxide powders were confirmed to be mixtures of Fe-oxide, Mn-oxide and mn-ferrite. the powders were homogeneously mixed and the particle size increased sleeply with increasing co-roasting temperature.
