Distribution Characteristics of Water Scavenger Beetles (Hydrophilidae) in Korean Paddy Field (논 서식 물땡땡이과의 분포 특성)

  • Aquatic invertebrates are the major important fauna to sustain the paddy ecosystem as predators of the lower trophic level and prey for birds in food-web dynamics as well. The nationwide distribution of scavenger beetles (Hydrophilidae) that is the top predator in an aquatic insect in the paddy field was investigated. A total of 15 scavenger beetles were recognized. Enochrus simulans (98.6%) and Laccobius bedeli (87.7%) showed a high frequency of occurrence on a nationwide scale. The majority of scavenger beetles were higher frequency of occurrence in mountainous regions(33.7%) than in open field regions(5.0%). On the other hand, E. uniformis, Coelostoma stultum and Berosus japonicus showed a low occurrence frequency. Hydrochara affinis, Sternolophus rufipes, Amphiops mater, B. elongatulus, B. signaticollis punctipennis, B. lewisius and H. libera showed regional specific distribution aspect. Therefore, these species can be used as biological index to research the biotic changes in paddy ecology according to an agro-environmental changes including climatic change in the future.

Immunological Change of the Lymph Node and Lymph Follicles, Stimulated LPS in the Popliteal Lymph Node of the Early Postnatal Mice (Lipopolysaccharide 항원에 노출된 발생초기의 림프절내 B 및 T 림프구의 면역학적 변화)

  • This study was designed to clarify the morphometrical change of lymph node, deep cortex and lymph follicles in draining lymph nodes of young mice in response to local injection of lipopolysaccharide(LPS). 1. In the group stimulated with LPS, aged 0 day and 3 days, the number of lymph follicles were not significantly different from those of control group. 2. In the group two to four weeks after injection with LPS, aged five days and one week, the number of lymph follicles were significantly increased from those of control group. 3. In the group one to four weeks after injection with LPS, aged 0 day, three days, five days and one week, the area of lymph node and deep cortex increased about 1.5-3 times more than that of the control group. 4. In the group two to four weeks after injection with LPS, aged three days, five days and one week, the lymph follicles(the area: larger than 0.1 mm2) were increased from those of control group. 5. In the group two to four weeks after injection with LPS, aged five days and one week, the lymph follicles(the area: smaller than 0.01 mm2) were increased from those of control group. In view of these experimental findings, the formation of lymph follicles were induced by LPS stimulation from 5 days to one week after birth. The newley formed lymph follicles area in response to LPS may be less than $0.01mm^2$.

Aquatic Insects Fauna and Characteristics of Distribution on Jeju Island Wetlands (제주도 습지의 수서곤충상과 분포 특성)

  • This study was conducted for searching the fauna, altitudinal distribution, and food patterns of the aquatic insects on Jeju island. The samples were collected from 102 freshwater wetlands during 2004 to 2008. The identified species were 100 belonged to 73 genera, 32 families, and 7 orders. One species of the genus Ephemeroptera, 23 of the Odonata, 1 of the Plecoptera, 23 of the Hemiptera, 47 of the Coleoptera, 3 of the Trichoptera, and 2 of the Diptera were identified in this study. The most widely distributed species was Sigara substriata, which was followed by Crocothemis servilia, Orthetrum albistylum, Gerris latiabdominis, and Anisops ogasawarensis. Sixteen species including Gynacantha japonica were very restrictedly distributed, which were sampled from only one site, respectively. The restrictedly distributed species (R) were classified into three altitudinal ranges, low (L), middle (M), and high (H). Ten species including Ranatra unicolor were RL type, only one species, Berosus japonicus, was RM, and 6 species including Nemoura KUb were RH. Narrowly distributed species (N) were 44 including Lethocerus deyrollei and intermediately distributed species (I) were 18 including Hesperocorixa distanti, and widely distributed species (W) were 21 including Nepa hoffmanni. According food uptake patterns, 75 species were carnivores, 18 herbivores, 5 omnivores, and 2 detritivores. Especially almost W were carnivores. From these results, we could concluded that the most aquatic insects species of Jeju island were characterized by their very limited altitudinal distribution range and carnivorous preference.

The Musical Choice by Kim Sohee through Okjungga (옥중가를 통해 본 김소희의 음악적 선택)

  • Manjungpan Chunhyangga is established by Manjung Kim Sohee. She selectively chose and arranged the songs by Jung Jungryeol, Song Mangap, Jung Eungmin, Kim Yeonsoo, Park Dongsil, and Jung Kwangsil. Kim Sohee once stated that while a major section of Chunhyangga is based on the songs by Jung Jungryeol, Song Mangap, Jung Eungmin, and Kim Yeonsoo, the whole part of Okjungga is derived from Park Dongsil. However, there is not much material that will provide enough information with regard to what musical characteristics Park Dongsilje Chunhyangga possessed. Under the circumstances, the voice of Park Dongsilje, left by Kim Sohee, triggers curiosity on Park Dongsilje Chunhyangga. It can also be construed that there must be a good reason for choosing Park Dongsilje for Okjungga, unlike other parts. Therefore, this paper attempted to find out what the unique features of Par Dongsilje are and what the reasons behind Kim Sohee's musical choice were through comparison and analysis of Kim Sohee's musical features in Okjungga. The following are the results. Firstly, Okjungga is a created verse by its nature and it does not possess specific features to a school. Therefore, the reason for choosing Park Dongsilje could have been based on musical reason rather than verse. Secondly, the lyrics of Park Dongsilje Okjungga is closer to that of Song Mangap rather than that of Jung Jungryeolje. It can be argued that it falls between the two of them. Thirdly, the tone and melody of Park Dongsilje Okjungga falls in the middle section of Dongpyenje and Supyenje. Fourthly, the analysis of Jinyangjo rhythm out of the whole Manjungpan Chunhyangga shows that there are slight differences among Song Mangapje, Jung Jungryeolje, and Jung Eungminje. Park Dongsilje is very unique in the sense that it does not use utbutim in gyemyeonjo part in Manjungpan Chunhyangga. Park Dongsilje Okjungga is a song to which the tone, melody, and sigimsae of Supyeonje is added to lyric butimsae of Dongpyeonje. It can be seemed as simple and less sophisticated because, with its simple lyric butimsae, it shows a less complicated tone utilization rather than Jung Jungryeol. With lighter decoration of music, feelings can be conveyed more directly. That is probably why Kim Sohee commented on Park Dongsilje Chunhyangga that it is the most mournful song for Chunhyang and it is the song that moves anyone who listens to the song. Consequently, Kim Sohee accepted Park Dongsilje Okjungga and she created different feelings to Manjungpan Chunhyangga which has repeatedly displayed the color of Jung Jungryeol. Combining the lyric addition of Dongpyeon style and the melody of Supyeon style can crated a different language.
