  • This study puts the purpose in providing the scientific basis of dance motion as an artistic expression by analyzing the kinematic variable and the distribution factor of power affecting the motion, which is connected to the turn, right after the arabesque motion according to the existence and non existence of using the arm in the arabesque motion of modern dance. As a result of this study, arabesque turn motion, not using the upper limbs, used more turning force of head and body than the arabesque turn motion, using the upper limbs, and arabesque turn using the upper limbs obtained the turning force, using the right shoulder. The range of the hip joint on the left and the position change of left tiptoe in the Arabesque turn motion using the upper limbs is largely ascended to the vertical axis, while, the position of tiptoe in the Arabesque turn motion, not using the upper limbs is dropped to the lower part of each event. In the replacement of body center, Arabesque turn motion using the upper limbs is moved more to the turning axis than arabesque turn motion not using the upper limbs. As a result of maximum vertical ground reaction force, Arabesque turn motion using the upper limbs appeared to be a lower value than the Arabesque turn motion not using the upper limbs.

  • This paper presents a human-machine interaction based on a realtime upper limb motion prediction method using surface electromyography (sEMG). The motions were predicted using an artificial neural network algorithm and sEMG signals which are acquired from five muscles, and then a manipulator was controlled to follow after the predicted motions. Upper limb motions were restricted to 2D vertical plane with the contact condition between a user and an end-effector of manipulator. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, experiments using developed method and using a goniometer were performed. The results showed that the proposed real-time motion prediction method can be implemented a human-machine interaction system.

  • The utilization of virtual reality is increasing not only in games but also in medical care such as rehabilitation. Due to the convenience, the motion of the upper limb is detected using a non-contact method using video or a handheld type mouse, etc. In this paper, we implemented a glove which can measure finger movements and upper limb movements by using flex sensors whose resistance value changes according to the degree of folding and inertial sensors which can obtain direction information in space. We showed the upper arm movements including finger movements with signals obtained from the implemented glove on the open software platform, Processing. The sensitivity of each finger movement was 0.5deg, and the sensitivity of the upper limb motion was 0.6deg.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in balance and upper extremity (UE) function associated with reaching training for children with quadriplegic cerebral palsy based on Biomechanical Frame of Reference. The baseline (phase A) lasted one week. The therapeutic protocol consisted of three reaching training (Phase B) for 40 minutes three times a week. Intervention phases lasted 4 weeks. The CMS-70P (Zebris Medizintechnik Gmbh, Germany) was used to evaluate the qualitative changes in UE function and Pediathc Berg Balance Scale was used to test the balance. The observed performance changes seem to be associated with the presence of intervention and suggest that biomechanical training can be a useful intervention to improve not only manual function but also balance.

  • In this paper, we proposed a design of upper-limb rehabilitation device with power-assist function for stroke survivals. The designed upper-limb rehabilitation device has three degrees of freedom; it is possible to perform flexion and extension motions of wrist, index finger and the other fingers except the thumb independently. The power-assist for wrist motion is performed by a pneumatic double-acting cylinder, but the fingers are actuated by electrical linear actuators to assist motions. A prototype upper-limb rehabilitation device and its controller were implemented. The position controller showed 0.8 mm errors in the steady-state. Experimental results showed that the proposed upper-limb rehabilitation device with power-assist function is feasible.

  • This study was performed to investigate the impact of the Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapy on the upper limb function recovery of patients with stroke and their abilities to perform daily activities and to provide basic data for a long-term treatment. A total of 30 patients with hemiplegia that occurred due to stroke were recruited as subjects of the present study, and 15 patients were randomly assigned to a Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapy group and a conventional treatment group, respectively. And, tests were performed over four weeks, five times a week, and 30 minutes a session. Manual Function Test(MFT), Fugl-Meyer Assessment Scale(FMA), and Korean-Modified Bathel Index(K-MBI) were used to measure the degree of the functional recovery before and after the experiment. According to the data of this study, in the upper limb function test, the Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapy group showed significant increase of the measurement values of MFT and FMA(p <.05), and when the difference between the two groups were compared, the upper limb function showed a statistically significant difference. In the daily activity performance test, only the Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapy group showed a significant improvement of K-MBI value(p <.05). Based on the results of the present study, it was demonstrated that the Neurocognitive Rehabilitation Therapy was effective in enhancing the upper limb functions and daily activity performance of patients with stroke.
