Financial Analyses for Value Maximization of KOSDAQ Listed Firms in Chungcheong Province in the Korean Capital Market (충청권 소재 코스닥 상장 기업들의 가치 극대화를 위한 재무적 요인 분석)

  • Given the dynamics of the changing economic or financial conditions in Chungcheong province in the domestic capital market, foreign and domestic investments are expected to continually increase their investments in volume and size in this particular province. Considering the unprecedented business climate, it may be essential to examine the primary financial aspects, such as corporate profitability, growth rate, and capital structure, which may work as effective catalysts to enhance corporate value. Concerning the outcomes, five proposed variables, such as market-value based leverage ratio, growth rate, Tobin's Q, business risk, and R&D intensity, highlighted the significant effects to determine the current level of profitability. Moreover, two variables, such as profitability and firm size, shared commonalities to discriminate between firms in the Chungcheong province (96 firms) and their counterparts (746 firms) in the other domestic provinces in terms of the growth rate and financial leverage. In contrast, three variables, including the interaction effect and firm size, had pronounced effects on profitability. The results of the study are expected to help enhance the corporate value in Chungcheong province by controlling the level of each significant factor.

Failing Prediction Models of KOSDADQ Firms by using of Logistic Regression (로지스틱회귀분석을 이용한 코스닥기업의 부실예측모형 연구)

  • The bankruptcy in Korea affects to all stakeholder of firms. Companies listed in KOSDAQ have high technology but the possibilities for success of business are low. The purpose of this study is to develop and to applicate falling prediction model of KOSDAQ firms using logistic regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the accuracy of classification of the models by years was between 76.5% and 77.5%, and that of the mean model was between 70.6% and 83.4%. Among the models, the mean model of -three years, -two years, and -one year was highest in the accuracy of classification (83.4%). Second, when the mean model of -three year, -two years, and -one years, the highest model in accuracy of classification, was selected to be verified on validation samples, the accuracy of prediction increased from -three years to -one year (71.7% for -three years, 75.0% for -two years, 90.0% for -one year). In indicating the superiority of developed model.

The Value Relevance of Accounting Numbers in the New CEO's Early Years of Service (최고경영자 취임 초기 회계수치의 가치관련성)

  • In this research, The new CEO is expected to increase a reporting income through earning management for individual benefit such as a good reputation, high compensation and CEO' s contract extension in the early years of service, of which may influence value relevance of the accounting numbers. We investigate the change of value relevance from 2004 to 2014, compare firms with a change of CEO and firms with non-change of CEO and analysis the value relevance in the early years and in the late years of the new CEO. The results of research are as follows. First, value relevance of EPS of firms with change of CEO are decreased, whereas value relevance of BPS are increased in the regression of all sample. Second, value relevance of EPS are decreased, whereas value relevance of BPS are increased in the early years of the new CEO. This research makes a contribution to provide the first proof about influence of value relevance by the earning management in the early years of the new CEO in Korea.

An Empirical Study on the Failure Prediction for KOSDAQ Firms (코스닥기업의 부실예측에 대한 실증 분석)

  • Bankruptcy of firms in Korea can cause distress of financial institutions because these institutions have disterssed bond. Accordingly, social and economical spill-over effects by these results are very big. Even after the difficult times of IMF crisis had ended, bankruptcy of information-based small-medium companies and venture firms listed on the KOSDAQ has been continued. In this context, this study developed and adopted failure prediction models for which discriminant analysis was used. Samples of this study was 81 firms respectively for both failed and non-failed firms listed on the KOSDAQ between the year of 2000 and 2007. The results of this study are as follows. First, the accuracy of classification of the model by years was $74.5%{\sim}76.5%$, and the accuracy of classification of the mean model was $69.6%{\sim}80.4%$. Among the models, the mean model of -one year, -two years, and -three years was highest in accuracy of classification (80.4%). Second, accuracy of prediction of final model adopted on validation samples showed 85% before one year of bankruptcy. The results of this study may be significant in that the results may be used as early warning system for bankruptcy prediction of KOSDAQ firms.

  • In order to newly expand and define the concept of "strategic servitization" based on Industry 4.0, this study tried to evaluate the existing status of domestic and foreign servitized manufacturing and investigated the servitization cases of some leading overseas companies. In addition, we chose 250 samples of manufacturing firms listed on KOSDAQ and collected a vast amount of data regarding servitized manufacturing, such as the current status about new businesses, profit model, and financial fluctuations of each company. Based on these data, we classified the main types of manufacturing-service convergence into a $2{\times}2$ framework and derived a new strategic servitization model for each type of signature. Furthermore, we divided the sample corporations into three groups, which are pure manufacturer, servitized firm, and strategic servitized firm, and through the mutual comparison of the real sales amounts and the estimated sales amounts by time-series extrapolation analysis, we statistically proved that the service sales of strategic servitized firms give positive impacts on ROA when compared with those of the other two groups. Finally, we selected 12 leading domestic strategic-servitized firms, interviewed them in depth, and not only organized the issues during this process and their solutions by categories but also suggested the policy demands for strategic servitization.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of CSR on the managers' compensation-performance sensitivity, and to determine whether there are differences in this relationship as the governance structure is more efficient. The sample for analysis was from KOSPI-listed companies in 2011-2017, and regression analysis was performed to confirm the relevance. The results are as follows: First, in CSR company, there was a negative relationship for managers' compensation-accounting performance sensitivity and a positive relationship for managers' compensation-stock performance sensitivity. Second, CSR and the managers' compensation-performance sensitivity vary depending on the type of corporate governance. In CSR companies, when the corporate governance is effective, the managerial compensation system generally complements each other. These results suggest that there is a need to design an effective manager's compensation system within the company in order to induce managers' decision-making in the direction of increasing shareholder profits in a long-term perspective in CSR companies. In addition, if we identify the relationship with the governance structure and reduce or improve the devices that overlap each other, it is believed that it will contribute to enhancing corporate value.

Regulation Changes to Boost KONEX: Effects and Implications (코넥스(KONEX: Korea New Exchange) 시장 활성화 조치: 효과 및 시사점)

  • KONEX (Korea New Exchange) is the organised stock exchange for small enterprises. It is a channel through which venture start-ups at their early stage can raise funds without a huge burden of debt. We explain the regulations in this market and examine the effects of major changes in the relevant regulations. The first change was replacing the call auction mechanism with the continuous auction mechanism. The change improved the information asymmetry among investors. The second was lowering the minimum deposit requirement for individual investors from 300 million won to 100 million won. As the result of the change, market liquidity increased a lot and the number of investors increased. The last change was introducing the small investment account. Although this raised the participation of individual investors but did not lead to the improvement in market liquidity or information asymmetry. In overall, encouraging more investors to participate in the transactions in KONEX is the fast way to boost the market, while the long-term strategy should focus more on improving the information asymmetry by helping information generating and transferring activities.

Content Analysis of Voluntary Environmental Disclosure Made in Stand-alone Environmental Reports or Company Web-sites: Focusing on the Interrelations between Disclosure Quality, Environmental Performance and Economic Performance (환경보고서 혹은 웹사이트를 통한 자발적 환경공시의 내용분석: 환경성과 및 경제적 성과와의 동시적 상관관계를 중심으로)

  • This study investigates the voluntary corporate disclosure of environmental information via stand-alone environmental reports or company web-sites. Quality of disclosure was assessed using the content analysis index proposed by Clarkson et al. (2008) based on GRI guidelines. Descriptive statistics on disclosure scores by category suggest that the level of disclosure is low relative to the expectation implied by the GRI reporting guidelines, and points to the need for improvement in the future. Specific areas where improvement is required include the disclosure of environmental performance indicators. Corporate environmental performance was measured in terms of the percentage of toxic wastes that was treated or processed by each firm and economic performance, by industry-adjusted annual return, which was subject to a series of association tests designed to explore the interrelations among environmental disclosure, environmental performance, and economic performance. The individual equation approach based on OLS procedures suggests a positive association between environmental performance and the level of discretionary environmental disclosures, which is not the case between environmental and economic performance. An integrated analysis using simultaneous equations approach does not indicate any significant relationships among three constructs, suggesting the lack of endogeneity, inconsistent with Al-Tuwaijri et al. (2004). Additional analysis assesses the level of environmental disclosure made in footnotes to the audited annual reports, which suggests that the quality of disclosure is very low and that footnote disclosure does not serve as a meaningful channel for the provision of corporate environmental information.

The Effect of Management Earnings Forecasts on Future Earnings Quality (경영자의 이익예측정보공시가 미래 이익의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed how management earnings forecasts would have an effect on future earnings quality. The analysis period of study was from 2003 till 2009 (ofrom 2004 till 2011) based on variables of interest (dependent variables) and the annual data from a total of 475 companies that publicly announced manager's operating earnings forecasts among securities listing companies were used for analysis. As a result, first, it appeared that the more optimistic the manager's earnings forecasts were for the current term, the lower the future earnings quality was. Second, it was found that the lower the accuracy of the manager's earnings forecasts was for the current term, the lower the future earnings quality was. Such findings suggest that management earnings forecasts will be used for determining future earnings quality.

A Study on the Efficiency Analysis of Specialty Construction Industry Type (전문건설업 유형별 효율성 분석 연구)

  • This study analyzed the efficiency by using the DEA model to evaluate the competitiveness of specialty construction firms. The target of the analysis is 300 firms with continuous data from 2010 to 2017 as listed and externally listed firms. Significant analysis results are as follows. First, the efficiency of specialty construction firms is lower than that of general construction industry. Second, efficiency by type was highest in facilities construction and dismantling work. This shows that the relevant industries such as reinforced concrete works and scaffolding and demolition work are relatively efficient in specialty construction industry. Third, the efficiency of specialty construction industry is affected by economic fluctuations. When the construction industry is in the expansion phase, the efficiency value is high and the efficiency value is low in the down phase. Finally, in the scale profitability analysis, specialty construction industry was most analyzed by DRS. This means that it is effective to scale down for the efficiency of the firm.
