A Study on Distribution and Packaging Status of Water Melon in Domestic Markets (국내산 수박의 유통 및 포장 실태)

  • Packaging and distribution status of watermelon Korean markets; Chunanm and Chunbuk, Kyungnam and Kyungbuk from January, 1999 to December, 1999 was surveyed to shipping methods, quality. Distribution and marketing of watermelon was different to the producing area, and quality of it was four grade. In a grade, difference of weight was 86%, and that of soluble solid content was 130%. Packaging status was almost non-pack, in case of packaging, packaging material was corrugated fiberboard and wooden-collar box, and packaging unit was mainly used to 8 to 10kg box, for one head or 4 heads was a few.

Load Efficiency of Corrugatedboard Boxes for Agricultural Produets on Trucks (화물차 적재중량에 따른 농산물용 골판지상자의 적재효율 분석)

  • In order to improve the load efficiency of pallets and trucks for agricultural products, various transport package sizes have been analyzed by modular coordination process. From the results, the load efficiency on pallet was 99.8 percent when size was 550 by 366 mm and 366 by 275 mm. Load efficiency of standard pallet(1100 by 1100mm) was 93.6% for truck with 11 tons load capacity while as low as 41.1% for 2.5 ton trucks. Like any other products, this study proved that trucks with more than 8 tons of capacity were highly recommended for transportation of agricultural products.

  • Korean native plants were investigated for their suitability to be used for floral clusters after drying. Floral clusters which were made in semi-sphere with a hand-tied method and can be fit in $22{\times}22{\times}37cm$ paper boxes were made with 37 species. Among 37 species, the 14 species which were easy to dry, to make floral clusters, and have not been used in other countries, were Echinochloa crus-galli var. frumentacea, Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, Muhlenbergia huegelii, Phleum pratense, Setaria glauca, and Setaria viridis in Gramineae, Artemisia capillaris, Artemisia montana, and Chrysanthemum indicum in Compositae, Agastache rugosa, Elsholtzia ciliata, Elsholtzia splendens in Labiatae, Carex neurocarpa in Cyperaceae, and Vitex rotundifolia in Verbenaceae were used with leaves, flowers, and fruits. The suitable plants for a floral cluster in $22{\times}22{\times}37cm$ paper box, a wreath in $22{\times}22{\times}6cm$ paper box, and a flower arrangement in $22{\times}22{\times}22cm$ paper box, which were made to a set, were 10 species, that is Phragmites communis, Setaria glauca, Setaria viridis, Artemisia capillaris, Artemisia montana, Chrysanthemum indicum, Elsholtzia ciliata, Elsholtzia splendens, Mosla punctulata, and Vitex rotundifolia.

  • Effect of packaging and storage methods for enhancing the shelf life and improving the postharvest quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was studied during high temperature period. Lettuces were packed using four packaging and storage types: (A) plastic box container (control); (B) plastic box container covered with high density polyethylene (HDPE) film; (C) plastic box container with lettuce wrapped in linear low-density polyethylene (LLD-PE) film; and (D) plastic box container with lettuce with its stem. The quality parameters, such as fresh weight loss, SPAD value, and appearance of lettuce were investigated. The lettuce wrapped with LLD-PE film inside the plastic box container showed the lowest weight loss, highest SPAD value and best appearance compared to those exposed to the other packaging and storage methods during the three-week storage at $2^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that the marketability of lettuce can be optimized if proper packaging and storing is adopted. Prolonging the freshness even on low temperature storage will increase the potential of its sale ability in the domestic market even during summer season.

Studies on the CA Storage of Sweet Persimmon in Polyethylene Film Pack (Polyethylene film포장(包裝)에 의(依)한 단감의 CA저장(貯藏)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • For development of long-term storage method of sweet-persimmons using polyethylene film bags, basic experiment was conducted with 30 boxes of sweet-persimmons in 1973 and the same experiment was extended for industrial application with 2,500 boxes of the persimmons in the cold storage of Jinyoung Sweet-persimmon Association in 1974. Investigation was made on change of the quality by storage period. At the same time, persimmons put in the cold storage test were shipped to market at different time in order to monitor consumer response and commercial feasibility. The followings are conclusion obtained from the result of this experiment. 1. Storage of sweet-persimmon, Buyu, produced in Jinyoung, Kimhae was possible for 1 month at $2^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ cold storage. This storage period was extended to 4 months until the end of February in case that the fruits were hermetically sealed in P.E. film bags of 0.08 to 0.1 mm thickness. 2. During the storage period of sweet-persimmons packed in the film bags, the loss of weight due to evaporation was effectively prevented with use of the film of bag thicker than 0.04 mm. 3. The storage ability of 3-5 persimmons per small bag was somewhat superior to that of many persimmons packed in the large box of 15kg capacity. 4. The thicker the film of bags, the more $CO_2$ gas was accumulated inside, however, from 1 month after beginning of the storage the rate of $CO_2$ accumulation became very low maintaining the stabilized level of 5-6% at the plot of 0.06-0.08mm thick bags. 5. While the persimmons were in storage, decreased was the content of total sugars, total acids, and vitamin C, of which the phenomenon was remarkable especially with the fruits of non-packed plot. 6. The sweet-persimmons in the film bags subjected to cold storage when shipped to market in their intact condition were more beneficial than when they were shipped out in unpacked condition. The intact fruits packed in the P.E. film bags were able to keep their commercial value for 10days in the outdoor situation. 7. The sweet-persimmons that were packed in the film bags and put in the cold storage had maintained promissing marketability and the economic feasibility was acknowledged when the experimental practice was applied to industrial scale.

Effect of Overlaid White Charcoal Board on the Ethylene Gas Adsorption and Preservation Life of Strawberry (오버레이 백탄보드의 에칠렌가스 흡착과 딸기 보관성 효과)

  • This research was carried out to examine the ethylene gas adsorption and preservation life of white charcoal boards for packaging. Two types of white charcoal board were made of #40-60 charcoal particles and mixed charcoal particles with PVA and MDI resin by wet process. For not only beauty effect but also avoiding stain from touching, white charcoal boards were overlaid with two kinds of overlay material, thin printed paper and non woven fabric. A charcoal board adsorbed ethylene gas much more than the paper and even white charcoal itself. There was no difference between two board types, between overlay treatments, and between overlay materials. Gray mold growth of strawberry arised after 2 days in a paper box and after 4 days in a white charcoal board. Preservation life of white charcoal board box was approximately twice more than that. of a paper box. There was no difference in the ability of keeping freshness between two board types, between overlay treatments, and between overlay materials.

Quality Changes of Table Grapes to Packaging Methods (포장재가 저장포도의 품질변화에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of packaging conditions on the freshness extension of table grapes were investigated during storage for 14 days at $25^{\circ}C$ The storage life of tables grapes was influenced by both packaging methods (corrugated cardboard and MA film with box) during storage. The fresh weight, vitamin C content, reduced sugar and titratable acidity of table grapes decreased during storage. The change of vitamin C content and acidity was influenced by both packaging methods during storage. The quality of table grapes packed with 20CE, 20LD film was better than the other packaging methods.

Effects on Quality of 'Fuji' Apple by Dipping of Calcium Solution and MA Packaging (칼슘처리와 MA포장의 저장중 '후지' 사과의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • 거창사과원예협동조합에서 구입한 사과 600상자를 5% $CaCl_2$ 용액에 각각 15분간 침지하는 방법으로 전처리 후 24시간 건조시키고 무포장구, $25{\mu}m$ 두께의 기능성 MA 필름으로 포장한 포장구와 무처리 무포장구인 대조구로 나누어 $0^{\circ}C$의 저온저장고로 옮겨 7개월 동안 저장하면서 3주 간격으로 품질을 분석하였다. 저장 기간이 증가할수록 중량 감소율은 Control 구보다 $CaCl_2$구와 $CaCl_2+MA$구의 중량 감소율이 월등히 낮았다. 경도변화는 저장 기간이 증가할수록 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 그 중 $CaCl_2$구는 초기치 0.97 $kg_f$에서 저장 18주에는 0.95 $kg_f$로 초기치에 비해 2%의 가장 적은 변화를 보였다. 산도는 대조구보다 처리구의 산도가 높게 나타났으나 큰 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 가용성 고형분 함량은 저장 기간 모든 실험구에 따른 큰 차이가 없었다. 비타민 C 함량은 저장기간이 지날수록 모든 실험구에서 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 기호도 조사에서 $CaCl_2$구와 $CaCl_2+MA$구가 대조구보다 유의적으로 높게 나타났다.

Effects of Nitrogen Fertilization Rate at Different Nursery Soils on Seedling Characters and Endosperm Consumption in Rice Seedling (상토 종류별 질소시비량이 벼 어린모 묘소질 및 배아양분 소모에 미치는 영향)

  • To clarify the proper nitrogen application level for rasing rice infant seedling under different nursery soil, Dongjinbyeo was raised at seedling box with different basal nitrogen level. The results are as follows. The higher the nitrogen level was, the lower emergence rate and the lower establishment rate. The establishment rate was less than 90%, when the nitrogen was more than 2g/box in hill soil and more than 1g/box in paddy soil. The more the nitrogen level was, the higher the seedling height in hill soil, but was higher in the order of N-2, 3, 1 and 0g /box. Leaf number wasn't significantly different between nusery soils and among nitrogen levels when seedling was raised more than 6 days. The endosperm survival rate was decreased as the increased nitrogen level, but wasn't different between the nursery soils. Amount of root was decreased as the increased nitrogen level in paddy soil, but was heavier in the order of N-1, 0, 2 and 3g /box in hill soil. Mat formation was better as the nitrogen level was decreased in all nursery soils. Considering the emergence rate, seedling charactors and mat formation, the proper nitrogen levels seemed to be 2g /box for hill soil and 1g /box for paddy soil.
