  • Experimental study on strength characteristics of frozen soils is necessary for the safety evaluation of design and construction in cold region. The objective of this study is to evaluate the direct shear strength of frozen soils obtained from traditional system (Type-1), system with roller on the upper shear box (Type-2), and system with fixed upper shear box separated from bottom shear box (Type-3). Specimens mixed with sand, silt, and water are frozen to $-5^{\circ}C$, and then direct shear tests are conducted under the normal stress of 5, 10, 25, and 50 kPa. Experimental results show that the upper shear box of Type-1 touches the bottom shear box due to the rotation of the upper shear box. The shear strength obtained from Type-2 is overestimated because the preventing rotation force is added to shear force. Type-3 may acquire the only strength of the specimen, and shear strain at peak shear strength is similar to that at the beginning of vertical displacement occurrence. In addition, internal friction angle and cohesion at both peak and residual stresses in Type-3 are smaller than those of Type-2. This study shows that high strength specimens including frozen soils can be effectively evaluated using improved shear box system such as Type-3.

  • This study aimed to develop a new method of Lentinula edodes cultivation to reduce labor and waste disposal. To identify the optimum container for L. edodes cultivation, box, bottle, and bag containers were assessed for their effects on the cultural characteristics and mushroom yield. Among the three approaches, box-cultivation with 7 kg of substrate had the shortest browning period (42 days) and resulted in the highest mushroom yield (1,253 g). Contrastingly, bottle-cultivation was unsuitable for cultivation due to low production of the fruiting bodies and poor quality. Further studies on the box-cultivation approach will be required for commercial applications of L. edodes.

  • In order to study the effect of packing materials on the quality of fares during storage period, grapes (Campbell Early) were packed with different materials such as expendable folystyrene (EPS) box, paper board box, biopaper board box, paper board box + small box, EPS box + (EPS dish + Bio-PE film sealing), md EPS box + (EPS dish + wrap sealing). The fruit weight loss was increased with the storage period by all the treatments. Weight loss was 6.38% lower in the EPS box+ (EPS dish + Bio film sealing) during 15 days of storage and 5.53% lower in EPS box + (EPS dish + wrap sealing) than that in the EPS box. The abnormal fruits were more increased in the sealing packing than in the non-sealing packing since water transpiration was prevented in the sealing treatment. Wilting fruits were also fewer in the sealing packing than that in the non-sealing treatment. The taste and appearance quality were worsened with increasing the storage days, whereas the appearance quality of the grapes in the bio paper board box was better. Hardness was scarecely changed in the EP5 box+ (EPS dish + Bio-PE film sealing) treatment than those by the other treatments. The soluble solid and acidity showed very little change but soluble solid content was more decreased in the sealing packing than that by the non-sealing treatment.

  • Laminar-shear-boxes are widely used to simulate free-field seismic ground response by using a l-g shaking table or geo centrifuge in geotechnical earthquake engineering. This study numerically modeled and compared the ground responses in the free field, rigid box, and laminar shear box by using a 3-D FEM program. It is found from the numerical simulations that the laminar shear box can simulate the free field ground movement more precisely than the rigid box. However, the laminar shear box underestimated the surface acceleration of the free field ground. It also showed low-frequency characteristics probably because the stiffness and inertia effect of surrounding ground are neglected.

  • This study is to investigate the color emotion associations of the color vision defectives, considering that the colors do have an effect on human emotional conditions. To realize this investigation, firstly we selected 100 normal persons (group C)and other 34 color vision defectives(group A), dividing the last group into two small groups as protanomaly group(group P) with 8 persons and deuteranomaly group(group D) with 16 persons. All participants have been offered to select one color from ten colors for each of three positive emotions such as 'favorite', 'happy' and 'friendly' and of three negative emotions like 'sad', 'disliked' and 'awkward'. And they selected another one color for each active and passive emotions. For 'favorite color' the group C selected 'blue' and 'red' while the group A chose 'blue'. For 'happy color' the two groups selected 'yellow'. For 'friendly color' the group C chose 'green', but the group A selected 'blue'. For 'sad color' the group C preferred 'blue', but the group A chose 'purple'. For 'disliked color' all groups selected 'bluish green'. For 'awkward color' the two groups preferred 'bluish green'. For 'active color' all groups selected 'red'. And for 'passive color' the group C chose 'bluish green', but the group A selected 'blue'. Depending on the type of color vision deficiency(group P and group D) some more differences were revealed relatively. These results should be applied to develop some intelligent color conversion technology for enhancing the usability of culture contents for color vision defectives.

  • A mass-rearing method for a soil-dwelling predatory mite Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Womersley) was developed using the double box system. The rearing box consists of two, outer (22 L, $54{\times}36{\times}18cm^3$) and inner (6.5 L, $31{\times}22{\times}11cm^3$), plastic boxes. Inner box was filled with chaff (rice husks) which is used as the shelter of the predatory mites. Outer box contained 1 L of water and the inner box, then covered with a lid. This system prevents the predatory mites from escaping as well as keeping moisture of the shelter. In addition, Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), as prey mites of S. scimitus, was reared on the rice bran as a food source using the same double box system. The both mites were reared at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, $60{\pm}10%$ relative humidity condition. The prey mites were provided once a week. The density of predatory mites increased three times for four weeks and the final population was approximately 120,000 individuals/box (4 L). This is a simple mass-raring technique of S. scimitus and helpful for the biological control of soil pests.
