Collective changes caused by orthodontic tooth movement evaluated in a specific treatment modality could give suggestive information on the specific treatment strategy. The aim of this study was to investigate retrospectively the characteristics of the orthodontic tooth movement during surgical-orthodontic treatment in order to provide an effective presurgical orthodontic treatment planning for the maxillary premolar extraction modality In the skeletal Class III malocclusion patient. Pre- and post-treatment dental casts of skeletal Class III malocclusion patients with nonextraction (N=:24) and the maxillary premolar extraction (N=31) were collected. The angulation and inclination measuring gauge(Invisitech Co. Seoul, Korea) was used to evaluate the orthodontic tooth movement. The changes in the maxillary and mandibular dental arch widths were also measured from the canines to the second molars. As a result, more palatal inclination change in the maxillary dentition was found with the premolar extraction modality than with the nonextraction modality. Linear regression analysis showed that the inter-arch width coordination was mainly due to the inclination changes of maxillary posterior teeth We conclude that the indications and proper treatment planning for surgical-orthodontic treatment in skeletal Class III malocclusion with maxillary premolar extraction could depend partly on the magnitude of the transverse inter-arch coordination especially in the maxillary dentition.
Dental arch expansion is one of the method used to solve the dental crowding problem by non-extraction. Many formulae using tooth size have been suggested to predict ideal inter-premolar and inter-molar width. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of some upper dental arch width prediction methods, namely Pont's method, Schmuth's method and Cha's method. The sample consisted of the casts of 119 Korean young adults who had no muscular abnormality, no skeletal discrepancy, and Angle's Class I molar relationships. Measurements were obtained directly from plaster casts; they Included mesiodistal crown diameters of the four maxillary incisors, as well as maxillary inter-first-premolar and inter-first-molar arch widths as specified by Pont. The correlation coefficients between the sum of incisors(SI) and upper dental arch width were calculated. The differences between predicted width and actual width were classified as overestimated, properestimated, and underestimated. The data obtained from each group were analyzed for statistical differences. The results were as follows : 1. Upper dental arch width indices were calculated from SI in normal occlusion (81.96 : premolar index, 62.55 : molar index). 2. Low correlations between SI and arch width were noted in normal occlusion (0.50 in the inter-premolar width, 0.39 in the inter-molar width). 3. Pont's formula and Schmuth's formula tended to overestimate the inter-premolar width. A more even distribution of estimates was noted in Cha's fomula. 4. Cases within $\pm$1 mm range of observed inter-premolar width were $45\%$ in the Cha's formula, $40\%$ in the Pont's formula, and $39\%$ in the Schmuth's formula. 5. All formulae had a tendency to underestimate the inter-molar width, but Cha's formula had better predictability than others. 6. Cases within $\pm$1 mm range of observed inter-molar width were $40\%$ in the Cha's formula, $29\%$ in the Pont's formula, and $13\%$ of Schmuth's formula. The data presented in this study does not support the clinical usefulness of ideal arch width prediction methods using the mesiodistal width of maxillary incisors.
This study was undertaken to compare the tooth and arch size between crowding patient and normal subjects. Two group of dental casts were selected on the basis of crowding patients and normal subjects. One group, consisting of 40 pair of dental casts(20 male and 20 female), exhibited noncrowded dentitions. A second group, consisting of 40 pairs of dental cast(21 male and 21 female), exhibited remarkably crowding need for orthodontic treatment. Tooth width measurements were made with a sliding digital caliper with Vernier scale neared 0.01 mm. Mean, standard deviation, T-test of the following parameters were used to compare two group : individual mesiodistal crown widths, arch width and arch length. The following result were obtained. In the mesiodistal crown widths, normal subjects had generalized larger teeth than Wheeler's results(human tooth size index), except for maxillary central incisor, maxillary 2nd premolar, mandibular canine, and mandibular 1st molar. In the orthodontic patients with crowded dentitions, the mesiodistal tooth crown widths were generalized larger teeth than noncrowded normal subjects. In the arch width and arch length, the crowded dentition group had smaller arch width and arch length than the normal group.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the dental and basal arch forms in patients with normal occlusion using the computed tomography (CT) imaging method. Methods: CT images were taken from 27 normal occlusion subjects (male, 15; female, 12) and these images were reconstructed into three-dimensional models. A 3D-coordinate system was formed by setting the middle of the facial axis (FA) point of the maxillary central incisors as the origin. The morphology of the maxilla and mandibular dental and basal arches were analyzed by sectioning parallel to the maxillary occlusal plane. Results: There was no significant difference between A point and B point and between the maxillary 1st molars in both sides of the maxillary and mandibular basal bone. The dental arch was located more labially than the basal arch in the anterior portion. The bucco-lingual crossover of the dental arch and basal arch was formed at the molar region in the maxilla, and at the premolar region in the mandible. Conclusions: This study will help provide three-dimensional diagnostic information about the relationship between basal and dental arches in patients who have severe dental compensation and inappropriate jaw relationships.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the physique of 147 dental hygiene students and the size of their dental arch. A survey was conducted, and impression taking was carried out at the same time to measure the arch length and width of the students. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. 74.8 percent of the students got a dental checkup over the past year. 86.4 percent breathed through the nose. 18.4 percent had ever received orthodontic treatment, and 49.7 percent had ever had their tooth extracted. 94.6 percent were fond of refined food, and 52.4 percent had a liking for hard food. 2. There were no statistically significant differences in arch length and width according to all the variables that related the size of dental arch. 3. Out of the physique variables, weight was identified as a variable to make a statistically significant difference to arch length and width. A heavier weight led to larger mandibular inter-canine width and larger maxillary inter-molar width. 4, A heavier weight had a weaker positive correlation to inter-canine width and inter-molar width. Arch length and width were most closely linked to maxillary inter-molar width and mandibular inter-molar width. The above-mentioned findings show that weight exerted an influence on the form of dental arch among the physique variables. In the future, sustained research efforts should be made to keep track of the relationship between the change of physique and the change of dental arch to improve the stability of occlusion and promote oral health.
Developmental changes of dental arch width and length from 6.6 to 13.6 yews of age have been studied in twenty boys and thirteen girls in Korean school children. A series of 8 dental casts obtained from each child was measured in the intercanine width, intermolar width and arch length. Afterwards, mean value and each standard deviation of each age group and each gender were obtained, and corresponding graphs were drawn. The finding of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. Maxillary intercanine widths increased until age of 13.5 in males and age of 12.5 in females. On the other hand, mandibular intercanine widths increased until age of 11.5 in males and age of 9.6 in females and after there were no changes. 2. Maxillary intermolar widths increased until age of 13.5, but annual increments reduce from age of 12.5 in both sex. Mandibular intermolar widths increased until age of 13.5 in males and age of 12.5 in females. Annual increments of maxillary intermolar width greater than those of mandibular intercanine width in both sex. 3. Maxillary dental arch lengths increased until age of 10.6 in both sex, and after decreased until age of 13.6. Mandibular dental arch lengths increased until age of 10.5 in males and age of 9.6 in females, and after decreased until a9e of 13.6. 4. Developmental changes of dental arch width and length showed individual variation.
The purpose of thus study was to measure the changes of arch and dentition of maxillary posterior teeth before and after treatment and postretentios in patients treated with Quad-helix. Measurements and analysis were performed on study model with carlipers. Seventeen cases, eight boys and nine girls, were selected with average ages of 12.7 years. Mean retention period was 4 months, and mean wearing time was. 127 days. The result were as follows 1. The interpremolar widths and intermolar width were significantly increased in maxillary first piennolar and molar when compared between before and after treatment and postretention. The maxillary second premolar resulted in significant increase in interpremolar between after tretment and post retention. 2. The long axis of maxillary first premolar and first molar accompaning buccal tipping was significant increased before and after Tx and post retention. Significant increase of the lingual inclination of maxillary second premolar was obsered both in before and after Tx, and before Tx and post retention. 3. The distance between the height of tooth contour was significantly increased in the first and second premolar before and after Tx, and was significant increased in the first molar before and after Tx and post retention. 4. Intermolar width at the palatal groove was increased in before and after Tx. and post retention. The palatal depth was significant increased in before and after Tx. In conclusion expansion of maxillary dental arch showed no relapse and results were stable retention
This study was carried out as a part of the semi-longitudinal study on growth and development of Korean children, with purpose of observing the growth change in arch form., 736 pairs, of study models were taken for 3 years. Mesio-distal diameter of each tooth, intercanine width, intermolar width, canine arch depth, molar arch depth and arch perimeters were measured. Afterwards, mean value and each standard deviation of each age group and each gender were obtained, and corresponding graphs were drawn. The following conclusions were obtained : 1. Mesio-distal diameters of maxillary central incisor, maxillary 2nd molar, mandibular canine, and mandibular 2nd molar showed statistical difierences between boys and girls. 2. Intercanine width shows a gradual increase until age of 11. 3. Intermolar width in maxilla shows continuous increase, and the tendency of increase is more apparent between age of 9 and 14. In mandible, various pattern was shown until age of 9, and after, a slight increase. 4. Canine arch depth shows the increasing tendency until age of 13 in maxilla and 11 in mandible. 5. Molar arch depth shows the pattern of increase until age of 10 in male and 9 in female, which is more apparent in maxilla. After age of 9 or 10,dereasing pattrn was significantly shown until age of 15 in maxilla and age of 12 in mandible. 6. Arch perimeters in maxilla and mandible showed gradual increase until age of 10, and the tendency of increase was more apparent in maxilla; however, between the age of 10 and 14, arch perimeters of maxilla and mandible showed gradual decrease which was more apparent in mandible.
