Causal Effects Along Transitive Causal Routes: Reconsidering Two Concepts of Effects Founded on Structural Equation Model (이행적 인과 경로를 통한 원인 효과에 대한 해명: 구조 방정식에 토대한 인과 모형의 원인 효과 개념에 대한 평가와 대안)

  • In this paper, I pose a problem for Hitchcock's arguments for two concepts of effects that are intended to explicate double causal effects, and put forth a theory that is intended not just to meet the problem but also to accommodate Hitchcock's theory and Eells' theory both. First, I introduce an example of dual causal effects, and examine the accounts of Otte(1985) and Eells(1987) on how to explicate the dual effects. I show that their accounts of the dual effects help us understand the problem of dual effects and see how different it is for Cartwright(1979, 1989, 1995), Eells(1991, 1995), and Hitchcock(2001a) to meet the problem. Second, I introduce two concepts of effects on Hitchcock(2001a), that is, net effect and component effect that are allegedly analogous to two effects of structural equation model. Third, I reveal the significance of homogeneous subpopulation and causal interaction regarding the problem of dual effects while examining Cartwright's theory and Elles' theory. Fourth, I critically examine the two concepts of effects on Hitchcock and argue against Hitchcock's criticism of Eells' theory. Fifth, I take a moderator variable of structural equation model and a moderator effect into the probabilistic theory of causality, and formally generalize causal interaction due to the dual effects in terms of disjunctive relation and counterfactual conditionals. I expect my account of disjunctive relation and counterfactual conditionals to contribute not just to several problems the received theories of causal modelling confront but also to the structural equation models many people exploit as a promising statistical methodology.

Antimicrobial Synergistic Effects of Gallnut Extract and Natural Product Mixture against Human Skin Pathogens (피부 병원성균에 대한 오배자 천연 복합물의 시너지 항균 효과)

  • This study was attempted to investigate natural materials with antimicrobial activity and to apply as natural preservatives in cosmetics. The disc diffusion method was used to search for nine species of natural antibacterial material for three species of skin pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Candida albicans. As a result of measuring the size of inhibition zone, Rhus Semialata gall (Gallnut) extract, Oak vinegar, and ε-polylysine were showed strongest antibacterial activities (> 10 mm). The Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of gallnut and oak vinegar ranged from 10 to 20 mg/mL and from 20 to 40 mg/mL against five human skin pathogens. The MBC of ε-polylysine ranged from 0.5 to 2 mg/mL in fungus. The synergic effect of gallnut extract/oak vinegar mixture and gallnut extract/ε-polylysine mixture were evaluated by checkerboard test. Compared to when used alone, the MBC of gallnut extract/oak vinegar mixture were at 4 times lower concentration against E. coli, C. albicans, and A. brasiliensis. Also Furthermore, the MBC of gallnut extract/ε-polylysine mixture were at 4 times lower concentration against C. albicans and A. brasiliensis. It was confirmed that the combination of gallnut extract with oak vinegar or ε-polylysine resulted in synergistic antibacterial effect against three human skin pathogens. Thus, it is expected that gallnut extract and natural product mixture can not only demonstrate antibacterial synergies, but also be applied in cosmetics as a natural preservative system with a wide antibacterial spectrum.

Seed Germination in Lettuce Affected by Light Quality and Plant Growth Regulators (상추 종자의 발아에 있어 광질 및 생장조절물질의 영향)

  • Lettuce, a typical light-induced seed germination type, exhibits different germination responses according to cultivars, light quality, and plant growth regulator (PGR) treatments. Germination rates in most tested cultivars were over 85% under both white and red light, and were slightly decreased by blue light. Although photo-inhibition in germination was observed from most cultivars by far-red light, 'Cheongguangcheongchima', 'Okdol', and 'Manchudaecheongchima' could be classified as photo-insensitive lettuce cultivars by exhibiting the germination rates as 78,63, and 48% under for-red light, respectively. 6-Benzylamino purine (BAP) and kinetin promoted seed germination and normal seedling production under far-red light, but ethephon did not show any positive effects. Cytokinins such as BAP, kinetin, thidiazuron (TDZ), and zeatin overcame photo-inhibition of seed germination even the concentration of below $50\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. However, auxins such as IBA, 2,4-D, and NAA failed to overcome the far-red light-induced photo-inhibition.

The Composite Effects of Composite Truss using High Strength T-shaped Steel (고강도 T형강을 사용한 합성트러스의 합성효과)

  • The composite action in truss beam is generally achieved by providing shear connectors between the steel top chord of the truss and the concrete slab. The composite sections have greater stiffness than the sum of the individual stinesses of the slab and truss. Therefore, steel trusses that act compositely with concrete slabs can carry larger load and are stiffer and less prone to transient vibration. The crack pattern and deflection of the beam of the composte truss were investigated by using of 600MPa class steel in this study. The test results were compared with the results for the noncomposite trusses. Test results were also compared with the results of composite trusses by using of 400MPa class steel. It was ascertained that the case of high strength steel is more efficient compared with the case of SS400 steel for T-shaped steel.

The composite action is generally achieved by providing shear connections between the steel top chord and the concrete topping. The composite sections have greater stiffness than the sum of the individual stiffnesses of the slab and truss. Therefore, steel trusses that act compositely with concrete slabs can carry larger loads and are stifferand less prone to transient vibration. During the tests that were performed in this study, the crack pattern and deflection of the beam of the composte truss were investigated. Usefulness of wraparound movement of cursor on different list types (리스트 종류에 따른 커서의 순환 움직임의 유용성 차이)

  • This study investigated the usefulness of the wraparound function that are usually employed in information displays of list types within diverse digital devices. The wraparound function indicates the cursor movement jumping to the last/first item when users move up/down the cursor at the first/last item in a list. This study performed two experiments on different kinds and lengths of lists with or without the wraparound function. The experimental results showed that the usefulness of the wraparound depended on the kinds and lengths of the list. In a long list, the wraparound helped to reduce the number of cursor movements, but made the moving speed of the cursor slow. The reason why the moving speed became slow might be because the participants needed the time to decide cognitively on whether they did the wraparound or not. In a more longer list, the increased time required for the decision making could be complemented by the decreased time owing to the reduced number of cursor movements with the effectiveness of the wraparound, thereby reducing total task completion time. Moreover, the participants admitted that the wraparound became more strongly necessary in the case of more long lists.

Social Support, Acculturative Stress, and Parenting Stress as Factors Influencing Child Abuse Among Married Immigrant Women in Korea (결혼이주여성의 아동학대 발생위험성에 영향을 미치는 요인 -양육스트레스, 문화적응스트레스, 사회적지지의 구조적 관계-)

  • This study was designed to explore the structural relationship of social support, acculturative stress and parenting stress which influenced child abuse among married immigrant women in Korea. For study 195 married immigrant women participated and structured questionnaire was used. This study identified that the variable of parenting stress directly affected child abuse and the variable of acculturation stress indirectly affected child abuse with a variable of parenting stress as a mediator variable. In addition, the variable of social support indirectly affected parenting stress with a variable of acculturation stress as a mediator variable. Also, the variable of social support did not directly affect child abuse, but it was verified as a protective factor to reduce the risk of child abuse. This study suggested the social interventions to prevent child abuse among multi-cultural families based on the study results.

A Numerical and Experimental Study of Heat Transfer through a Double Pane Window to Enhance Thermal Insulation of Building (건물 에너지 절약을 위한 수치해석적/실험적 이중창 열전달 연구)

  • The performance of heat transfer through double pane window has been investigated using experimental and numerical methods. The range of the gap distance between glasses are 0.5-10 cm. The convection heat transfer plays the dominant role for the case of the wide gap distance together with the large Rayleigh number and thereby, reduces the enhanced thermal resistance due to the increased air gap, while the conduction heat transfer does the major role for the case of small gap distance. In order to enhance the thermal insulation of the double pane window, the heat transfer of triple pane window, which is constructed to put one more glass at the middle of the double pane, is investigated to check the reduction of the convection heat transfer together with the effect of the radiation shield due to the presence of the additional glass. Further, a spacer is installed at the middle height of the double pane, and the effect of which on the suppression of the convective heat transfer is analyzed carefully, using experimental and numerical methods. For the case of the spacer-installation, the amount of energy saving is considered about 10%, but the energy saving increases a lot to 30-50% for the case of triple pane window, due to the substantial radiation shield effect of the presence of the additional glass.

Performance Analysis of OFDM Communication System Cancelling the ICI by Data Conversion Method (ICI를 Data Conversion 방식으로 상쇄하는 OFDM 통신시스템과 성능분석)

  • In the multi-carrier OFDM communication system, the inter-carrier-interference(ICI) produced by phase noise in the transceiver local oscillator makes a severe influence on the system performance. In this paper, a new ICI self-cancellation scheme in the data-conversion type is proposed to reduce effectively the ICI. Also, the common phase error(CPE), ICI and carrier to interference power ratio(CIR) are found by the linear approximation of the phase noise. Then, the proposed method is compared with the conventional OFDM to analyze the efficiency of system performance improvement. When the number of subcarriers is 64, there are respectively the SNR gain of 0.6 ㏈ in the phase noise variance of 0.3 with QPSK and 1.5 ㏈ in the phase noise variance of 0.1 with 16 QAM at BER=10$\^$-3/. As a result, the performance degradation by ICI can be effectively lowered in the proposed system with ICI self. cancellation scheme, compared with the conventional OFDM system.

Periodically Corrugated Transmission Line Design for Crosstalk Reduction (Crosstalk 감소 효과를 갖는 주기적인 요철 모양의 전송 선로 설계)

  • In this paper, a periodically corrugated transmission line is proposed. The proposed transmission line can reduce crosstalk between transmission lines. The corrugated transmission line can adjust the amount of inductive coupling and capacitive coupling equally. Thus, the crosstalk is effectively reduced because the inductive coupling and capacitive coupling cancel each other. The corrugated transmission line is fabricated on RO4003 substrate with a dielectric constant of 3.38 and a thickness of 0.508 mm. The simulated far-end crosstalks of conventional transmission line and corrugated transmission line with a period of A=1 mm have maximum values of -3.6 dB and -22 dB, respectively, up to 30 GHz. Measurement results showed that far-end crosstalks of the conventional and corrugated transmission line have maximum values of -6.3 dB and -20.5 dB, respectively, up to 30 GHz.
