Review on the Relative Sea-level Changes in the Yellow Sea during the Late Holocene (한반도 서해안의 후기 홀로세 해수면 변동 곡선에 대한 검토)

  • In this paper, we review previous studies on the relative sea-level changes in the Yellow Sea during the Holocene to comprehensive understand the various research results. Currently, it is reported two theories : 1) the Holocene sea-level has never been higher than the present-day level; and 2) sea-level have reached highstand during mid-Holocene, followed by slow lowering to that of the present. The first theory yields a curve that is similar to a climate-change-related eustatic sea-level curve. However, in reality, most of the relative sea-level fluctuation resulted from land uplift or subsidence. The second theory yields a curve that is fairly coincident with a relative sea-level curve indicative of continental margins being located away from the ice sheets(i.e., far-field), and is considered as an effect of GIA(Glacio Isostatic Adjustment) and gravitational attraction. Based on detailed review of previous researches, we realized that they sourced the same papers, but obtained different results because they selectively chose and added the data. The data used to derive the second theory pertain to the northern Gunsan region, which is located within the western area of the Chugaryeong fault. Thus, we believe that the sea-level curve for the second theory is only representative of the area north of Gunsan, which is subject to GIA and tectonic deformation. Although the relative sea-level curve for the west coastal area is comparable to that for the far-field continental margin region, it is necessary to evaluate local tectonic activities as suggested by active seismicity in the west coastal area and the more than 400 faults currently existing in on the Korean Peninsula.

Analysis of Absolute Sea-level Changes around the Korean Peninsula by Correcting for Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (후빙기조륙운동 보정을 통한 한반도 주변 해역의 절대해수면 변화 분석)

  • Based on the ICE-3G and ICE-5G ice models, we predicted the velocities of crustal uplift caused by Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) at 39 tide gauge sites operated by Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA). We also divided the Korean peninsula in the ranges of $32-38.5^{\circ}N$ and $124-132^{\circ}E$ in $0.5^{\circ}{\times}0.5^{\circ}$ grids, and computed the GIA velocities at each grid point. We found that the average uplift rates due to GIA in South Korea were 0.33 and 1.21 mm/yr for ICE-3G and ICE-5G, respectively. Because the GIA rates were relatively high at ~1 mm/yr when the updated ice model ICE-5G was used, we concluded that the GIA effect cannot be neglected when we compute the absolute sea level (ASL) rates around the Korean peninsula. In this study, we corrected the ICE-5G GIA velocities from the relative sea level rates provided by KHOA and we computed the ASL rates at 13 tide gauge stations. As a result, we found that the average ASL velocity around the Korean peninsula was 5.04 mm/yr. However, the ASL rates near Jeju island were abnormally higher than the other areas and the average was 8.84 mm/yr.

  • 최근 기후변화에 따라 우리나라 해수면 상승률은 평균 2.48mm/yr로 가파르게 상승하고 있다. 동해의 해수면 상승률은 2.69mm/yr 로 전세계 평균 해수면 상승률인 2.0mm/yr 보다 높게 나타나 해수면 상승에 의한 해수침투 피해가 증가할 것으로 예상된다. 해수침투로 인해 1차적으로 연안지역의 해수침투 영역이 증가하고, 지하수의 오염, 농작물의 염수 피해, 산업활동의 제약 등 피해 범위가 지역 사회 범위로 점차 증가한다. 한정된 자원에서 해수침투를 예방하고 피해지역을 줄이는 것에는 많은 어려움이 있다. 이를 위해 동해 연안지역의 행정구역을 대상으로 정량적인 분석을 통하여 해수침투에 취약한 지역을 선정하고 대비하는 것이 가장 효율적인 방법이라고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 해수침투에 영향을 미치는 인자들을 수집하고, 취약지역을 평가하여 분석하였다. 동해 연안의 11개 시 군 행정구역을 대상으로 해수침투에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 인자를 선택하고 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 Re-scale 방법을 이용하여 표준화 하고 엔트로피 방법을 이용하여 산정된 가중치를 각각의 인자에 적용하였다. 산정된 해수침투 취약성 지수는 동해안을 대상으로 하여 각 행정구역에 대한 상대적인 취약성을 나타낸다. 최종적으로 산정된 취약성 지수를 동해안의 행정구역이 도시되어 있는 지도에 나타내어 취약한 지역에 대하여 해수침투 방지 대책 및 시설 보강 계획을 세운다면 해수침투 피해에 효율적인 대처가 가능할 것으로 예상된다.

  • 혼합층(Mixed layer)은 온도가 일정한 수심층으로, 해수표면에 작용하는 바람의 영향으로 인하여 해수가 위아래로 섞여 형성된다. 이러한 혼합층은 영양염의 순환과 산소의 공급 등과 함께 일차생산량을 결정하는 중요한 요인이 될 수 있으며 혼합층 두께의 변동은 양식 산업에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 최근에는 기후변화로 인한 해수면 상승 및 해수온 상승 등이 지속되고 있으며, 이러한 현상은 해양생태계의 변화를 초래하여 수산업의 피해를 유발할 수 있다(강원연구원, 2017). 이에 국립수산과학원, 기상청, 국립해양조사원 등 유관기관에서는 정선해양 수온 관측 및 해수순환모델을 이용하여 혼합층의 분석을 수행하고 있으나 격자 구축 및 초기·경계장 설정의 한계가 존재하여 정밀하고 정확한 혼합층 분석에는 어려움이 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 비정형격자를 사용하여 격자 구축에 제약이 없는 SCHISM (Semi-implicit Cross-scale Hydroscience Integrated System Model)을 이용하여 우리나라 연안해역의 계절변화 및 기후변동성에 따른 혼합층 두께의 변화를 검토하고자 한다. 연구대상지는 서해·동해·남해를 포함한 우리나라 전체 연안 해역(위도: 32°N ~ 39°N, 경도: 124°E ~ 132°E)으로 선정하였으며, 격자크기 100 ~ 3,000 m인 삼각격자로 격자를 구축하였다. 혼합층을 분석하기 위하여 수직격자 층은 50층으로 SZ(Sigma Z coordinate system)좌표계를 사용하였다. 초기·경계장은 FES(Finite Element Solution)2014, HYCOM(Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model) 및 대기모델 결과를 이용하여 설정하였다. 수치모형 검증을 위하여 수온관측소에서 수심별 측정한 수온 값과 SCHISM 결과 값을 비교하였고, 상대오차가 약 10% 이내로 나타나 모형의 정확도를 확인하였다. 최종적으로 해수면 상승 및 해수온 상승 시나리오를 고려하여 계절별 연안해역의 혼합층 두께의 변화 양상에 대하여 검토하였다. 향후에는 보다 정밀한 대기모델과의 혼합모형 구축 및 다양한 수심 별 관측자료를 활용한다면 실무에서 적용 가능한 혼합층 분석 및 수산업 피해 발생 지역에 대한 피해저감 대책 수립이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

  • In general, RTK-GPS(Real Time Kinematic GPS) based on the single reference station is able to determinate the high accurate position of rover on the spot using error correction information of transmitted carrier phase from the base station via wireless modem. However, single reference station method has some weak points to decrease positioning accuracy because it must be obtained carrier phase from the each satellite continuously, allowed to transmit without obstacle and limited to short base line distance between base and rover station. This paper aims to attempt network based GPS carrier phase differential positioning using three multi reference stations to overcome the method of single reference station and RTK network is realized by real time monitoring program with Visual C++. The optimum error correction value of three multi reference stations by RTK networking is selected automatically to correct the position of rover station. In this paper, this algorithm is applied to determine sea water level using GPS buoy, and the accuracy results of water level change were analyzed and compared with each other using single and multi reference stations.

  • A series of radiocarbon dating from intertidal, subtidal, and inner continental shelf deposits investigated along the west coast of Korea as well as from its offshore sea floor (namely, the eastern Yellow Sea Basin) how (1) the Holocene sea level rise, i.e., the ecstatic sea-level history during the oxygen isotope stage 1, and (2) pre-Holocene sea-level fluctuations during the oxygen isotope stages 2 and 3. Marine geophysical investigations in the Yellow Sea reported a possible development of desert and loses deposits due to dieselization under the cold and dry climate during the Last Glacial Maximum. The Kanweoldo deposit overlain unconformably by the Holocene intertidal deposits, which is mainly exposed along the tidal channels and intertidal flats in the Cheonsu Bay, the west coast of Korea, shows the characteristic cryogenic structure (cryoturbation). Such cryoturbation structure of the Kanweoldo deposit appears to indicate the cold and dry climate under the ecstatic sea-level paleoshoreline standing before and after of the pre-Holocene interstitial period (about 30000 y BP is suggested and its shoreline curve is constructed.

Change of Nearshore Random Waves in Response to Sea-level Rise (해수면 상승에 따른 연안 지역 불규칙파의 변화)

  • In this study, a method has been developed for estimating the change of nearshore random waves in response to sea-level rise, by extending the method proposed for regular waves by Townend in 1994. The relative changes in wavelength, refraction coefficient, shoaling coefficient, and wave height for random waves are presented as functions of relative change in water depth. The changes in wavelength and refraction coefficient are calculated by using the significant wave period and principal wave direction in the regular-wave formulas. On the other hand, the changes in shoaling coefficient and wave height are calculated by using the formulas proposed for shoaling and transformation of random waves in the nearshore area including surf zone. The results are proposed in the form of both formulas and graphs. In particular, the relative change in wave height is compared with the result for regular waves.

  • Time series of the relative sea levels at the selected tide-gauge stations in the North Pacific and historical aerial photographs in the Hawaiian Islands are analyzed. Long-term rising trend of sea level ranges from +1 to +5 mm/yr at most of the stations, which is primarily due to global warming and tectonic motion of the plates. The annual and interannual fluctuations of sea level result from the thermal expansion/contraction of sea-surface layer due to the annual change of the solar radiation and possibly from a coupled ocean-atmosphere phenomenon associated with an ENSO event, respectively. Sea-level changes in three different time-scales (linear trend. annual oscillation, and interannual fluctuation) and their quantitative contribution to the shoreline changes as a result of long-term cross-shore sediment transport arc hypothesized.

  • Gravity measurement can determine the earth gravitational field, also is the fundamental to the research of earth gravitational field, geodesy and geodynamic, vertical movement of the crust, geoid surface, sea level and climate etc. Recently, National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) introduced FG-5 absolute gravity meter in order to lay a foundation for establishment of Absolute Gravity Network, and furthermore NGII plan to construct about 1,200 multi dimensional and function Unified Control Points(UCP) in nationwide. It will play an important role in development of high accuracy geoid model in South Korea. This paper explains the fundamental theory and method of relative gravity measurement, surveys the relative gravity of 21 stations using latest Scintrex CG-5 relative gravimeter. In addition, it calculates gravity values, compare and analysis gravity survey results using datum-free adjustment and weighted constraint adjustment. The results indicate show that datum-free and weighted constraint adjustment methods are available to determine high accuracy gravity achievement, datum-free method is more advantage than weighted constraint adjustment.

High-Resolution of Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction and Sea-Level History in Delaware Bay, the East Coast of U.S.A. (미국동부 델라웨어만의 고정밀도 해수면 역사와 고환경 복원)

  • The closely spaced cores were analyzed to find detailed reconstruction of paleoenvironments and sealable changes along the Delaware Bay coast. Three areas, Kitts Hummock Beach mars, the St. Jones River marsh, and Bowers marsh near the St. Jones River's mouth, were chosen because these areas are compose of their own geomorphic characteristics and sea-level history. since significance of the stratigraphic correlations was to determine sedimentary fancies and paleoenvironments, multidisciplinary methods such as lithological description, grain-size analysis, organic/inorganic content, water content, mineral composition, botanical analysis, micropaleontological analysis, and /SUP 14/C datings were performed. Five major divisions of marsh environments were recognized in the stratigraphic sections: freshwater marsh, initialfreshwater marsh, slightly brackish marsh, brackish marsh, and salt marsh. Most of the lower part in the stratigraphic sections show freshwater marsh. On the top of this, either brackish marsh or tidal flat/tidal stream was recorded. The pro-Holocene sediments consist of sand, mud, and sandy mud, The pre-Holocene configuration played an important role for developing the Holocene Paleoenvironmental changes. The irregular configuration of the pre-Holocene sediments consist of sand, mud, and sandy mud. The irregular configuration of the pre-Holocene surface within short distances permitted the concurrent development of variable environments such as freshwater marsh, brackish marsh or salt marsh at similar elevations. The freshwater marsh in this case was formed in the areas of isolation, so saline-water cannot encroach upon these areas. This complex development of paleoenvironments leads to a difficulty in stratigraphic correlation and interpretation of local relative sea-level changes. The deposition of subsurface sediments was affected by sediment supply, compaction, fluvial activity, biological competition, local tectonics and isostacy, climate and local relative sea-level changes. It was interpreted that the positions in the changes from freshwater environments to brackish environments or ice versa are the turning points of transgressions and regressions. Therefore, multiple transgressions and regressions were identified in the stratigraphic sections of the study area.
