  • This study was conducted to reveal the effects of local climatic conditions on the vegetative growth in a mature stand of Korean white pine based on climatic estimates. For this, the annual increments of stand variables such as DBH, height, basal area and volume were measured and estimated for seven years from 1974 to 1980. The local climatic conditions in the study site were also estimated by both a topoclimatological method and a spatial statistical technique. The local climatic conditions were then correlated with and regressed on the growth factors to reveal the relationships between the climatic estimates and the growth. It is found that relatively high temperatures had positive effects on the diameter growth. The yearly diameter growth increased when each of mean, maximum, and minimum temperature during the growing season was high. Height growth showed positively significant correlation with three climatic variables. The most important variable influencing height growth was the average of maximum temperature for 10 months from January to October. It means that the higher the average of maximum temperature for 10 months from January to October is, the more height growth of Korean white pine increases. Other climatic variables related to height growth were average of minimum temperature for 3 months in the early growing season and mean relative humidity for the growing season. Six climatic variables related to temperature had effects on basal area increment and all of them were positively correlated with basal area increment. Especially, temperatures from January to March were important factors affecting the basal area increment. In volume increment, high correlation was also recognized with most of temperature variables. This tendency was the same as the results in diameter and hight increments. This means that the volume growth increases when temperatures during the growing season are relatively high.

  • In wetland protection areas, a phytosociological research was conducted on willow forests, which plays an important ecological and environmental role and is the main material for ecological restoration. A total of 61 relevés were collected according to the Z-M(Zürich-Montpellier) school's method and the characteristics of plant communities and the composition of the species were identified. A total of 9 plant communities including 237 taxa were differentiated. Willow species showing the high r-NCD(relative net contribution degree) value in study areas were Salix koriyanagi, Salix chaenomeloides, Salix triandra subsp. nipponica, Salix gracilistyla and Salix pierotii. Poaceae was the most diverse in species, followed by Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Polygonaceae and Fabaceae. Life form type of willow forests in wetland protection areas was determined to be Th(therophytes)-R5(non-clonal form)-D4(clitochores)-e(erect form) type. The naturalized plants and invasive alien species were identified as 24 taxa and 4 taxa, respectively. Naturalized and disturbance indices were 10.1% and 41.4%, respectively. The results of the site-species ordination by Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling(NMDS), wetland types and altitude gradient were the main ecological factors determining the spatial distribution of plant communities. Diversity index and evenness index were high in mountainous palustrine wetlands with relatively high altitude, and the disturbance index, naturalized index and appearance rate of annual plant were high in riverine and lacustrine wetlands with low altitude.

  • We evaluated the aquatic ecosystem of Keum-Ho River through applications of the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) during June-November 1999. Overall IBI values ranged from 13 to 37 with mean of 23 (n=25, Std. error= 1.16), indicating a "Poor" or "Very Poor" condition according to the criteria of Karr (1981) and U.S. EPA (1993). The values of mean IBI declined at the rate of $0.22km^{-1}$(($r^2$=0.91, p< 0.05) along the longitudinal distance from the headwaters to the down-river. Reduced IBI values at down-river (St. 4 and 5) were attributed to the decreases in riffle benthic species and the relative abundance of insectivore and increases in tolerant species, anormalies and exotic species. Spatial pattern in IBI agreed with QHEI values, which showed a linear relation ($r^2$=0.998, p< 0.001) with mean number of species. Field measurements of conductivity and pH, indicators for variation of conservative ions, showed that the river water was diluted up to 30% by summer precipitation and surface run-off from the watershed, resulting in physical and chemical instability during the monsoon. For these reasons, average IBI values during monsoon and postmonsoon decreased more than 20% compared to pre -monsoon. Before the perturbation of the system (i.e., pre-monsoon), values of QHEI were inversely correlated (r=-0.99, p< 0.0001) with realtive abundance of native omnivore and were positively correlated (r=0.87, p=0.05) with relative abundance of native carnivore. These results indicate that spatial degradation of habitat quality modified the species richness and trophic structure, producing decreased IBI values. • In this paper, we conduct an objective performance analysis of the crosstalk cancellation scheme studied in [11]. While the conventional scheme is only applicable to a listener on the optimal listenable region (sweetspot), the space skew/crosstalk cancellation (SS/CC) scheme in [11] can mitigate crosstalk regardless of the listener's position by using listener position tracking (LPT) system. The SS/CC scheme is composed of two parts: LPT-based SS and CC parts. In this paper, the SS/CC scheme is evaluated by some criteria such as follows: condition number, and the balance characteristic, its root mean square error, and running average.

  • The flash flood has been studied in the climatological aspect which considers temporal and spatial characteristics of rainfall. However, we have not interested in runoff hydrograph for flash flood study. Therefore, our objectives of this study are to apply a work of Bhaskar et. al (2000) which studied runoff hydrograph to represent the flash flood to Korea and also to distinguish flash flood event from general flood event. That is, we quantified the severity of flash flood by estimation of flash flood index using runoff hydrograph. This study estimated the flash flood index for investigating the relative severity of flash flood in Han river basin with 101 flood events. Also we quantified the flash flood severity for flood event by heavy rainfall occurred in July of 2006. As a result, Kangwon-do province showed more severe flash flood than other areas in Han river basin and urban area such as Jungrang cheon stream also showed severe flash flood. We analyzed a flash flood of July of 2006 by dividing July into 1st to 3rd terms. From the analysis we knew that the 1st term of July showed the severe flash flood was occurred in Seoul area and the 2nd term showed it was occurred in Kangwon-do province.

  • To verify the cause of high productivity in Typha stand, leaf area index(LAI), leaf orientation and inclination, specific leaf area (SLA), and radiation interception profiles were determined in a natural Typha$\times$glauca stand. Throughout the growing season, the leaf inclination has been kept at near-right angle and leaf orientation has been random. These chracteristics were responsible for an uniform spatial arrangement of the leaves within the canopy and could be explained by the SLA value, which increased in their higher strata. The extinction coefficient (K) of the canopy, 0.12 to 0.20, was one of the smallest value out of terrestrial plant communities. At least more than 25% of full radiation penetrated into the lowest stratum of the canopy. High productivity of the Typha would be attributed to efficient penetration of the radiation in virtue of the stiff and straight leaves even though rather small LAI.

  • The proposed flood forecasting system combines a flood routing model with a parameter estimation model. In the parameter estimation model system states and parameters are treated with the extended state-space formulation. The extended Kalman filter is adopted to estimate the states and parameters. A sensitivity analysis is used to investigate the relative significance of the parameters. Insensitive parameters are treated as constants and parameters that are mutually correlated are combined in a simplified form. The developed estimation methodology is applied todam sites of the multi-purpose reservoirs in Korea. The forecasted hydrographs from the extended Kalman filter satisfactorily coincide with the observed. From the time sequence plots of estimated parameters, it is found that the storage coefficient is almost constant, but exponent varies appreciably in time.

  • The deregulation of aviation markets in Europe and the United Sates had led airlines to reconfigure their networks into hub-and-spoke systems. Recent trends of "Open Skies" in the Asian aviation market are also expected to prompt the reformation of airlines' networks in the region. A significant connectivity index is a crucial tool for airlines and airport authorities to estimate the degree of hub-and-spoke operations. Therefore, this paper suggests a new index, Continuous Indirect Connectivity Index (CICI), for measuring the coordination of airlines' flight schedules, applying it to the Asian, European and the American aviation markets. CICI consists of three components:(i) temporal connectivity to identify the attractiveness between connection flights, (ii) spatial connectivity to differentiate the attractiveness by de-routing distance with continuous linear function, and (iii) relative intensity to reflect the effect of direct flight frequency on transfer routes. CICI is evaluated to examine a casual relationship through regression analyses with two dependent variables of the number of transfer passengers and transfer rates. Compared with Danesi's index and Doganis' index through evaluation processes, CICI has a higher coefficient value of determination, implying that it explains the relationship between connectivity and transfer passengers more precisely.

  • The role of macropore in the hydrological processes is important at the hillslope scale. Developments and distribution of macropores have not been investigated in conjunction with the characteristics of the hillslope such as topography, soil property, and soil moisture. In this study, macropore properties, such as macropore flow and saturation hydraulic conductivity were measured at a hillslope located in Gwangneung Research Forest, Pochun-gun, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. An intensive field survey provided a refined Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for surface and subsurface topography. Spatial distributions of upslope area and topographic index were obtained through the digital terrain analysis. The total number of monitoring points was 22, and the selected points were distributed along the transect of the digital contour map. Vertical fluxes through macropores were measured using a tension infiltrometer at the depth of 0.1 m from the surface. Spatial and temporal distributions of soil moisture were obtained using an on-line measurement system, TRASE, installed in the study area. Soil moisture for the aforementioned points was measured at 0.1 and 0.3m depths below the surface. The results from tension infiltrometer experiments present that the macropore flows ranged between 21 and 94%, and the measured macroporosities varied from 1.4 to 47%. Macropore flows and macroporosities tended to increase as the measurement location moved to downslope. The ability for water conduction through macropores becomes increasingly developed as the location approaches the outlet of the hillslope.
