  • As an exploratory research to understand the nature of relationships between harbors and their neighboring communities, this study analyzes how harbors influence their residents' quality of life(QOL). The QOL was measured by 18 indicators reconstructed by reviewing relevant literatures. As a result, both Busan and Incheon were found to have statistically significant influence on many of QOL indicators including general expenditure per capita, number of manufacturing factories per capita, rate of housing supply, number of financial agencies per capita, number of cultural assets per capita, number of schools per capita, number of sick-beds per capita, and the size of welfare expenditure per capita.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential causal relationship between unmet healthcare needs and metrics related to quality of life. To examine the relationships between these variables, the study conducted an analysis by processing additional irradiated raw materials of the Korean Medical Panel. The metrics related to quality of life included six variables: athletic ability, self-care, daily activities, pain/trouble, uneasiness/depression, and subjective health conditions. Linear regression analysis revealed that the unmet healthcare needs had statistically significant negative effects on all six quality of life variables. A review of the magnitude of the linear regression β values for those variables showed that the relative level of influence on the quality of life variables decreased in the following order: pain/trouble, subjective health conditions, uneasiness/depression, daily activities, athletic ability, and self-care. Based on the results, practical applications related to strengthening working-level links between health and welfare is considered an effective policy response to the continued presence of unmet healthcare needs; such applications could contribute to improving the quality of life of those with unmet healthcare needs.

  • There has been an increasing attention to social diversity within communities. Previous studies suggest that social diversity is positively related to social trust and social capital that are intimately related to quality of life. Because of the controversy on social segregation that is an opposite concept of social diversity and is a factor negatively affecting quality of life, more studies on the association between social diversity and quality of life should be undertaken. This study employs a multilevel model to examine the association between social capital and quality of life. We analyzed the association using both the pooled sample and samples splitted based on social class. The empirical result shows that the occupational diversity positively affects quality of life while the income diversity negatively affects quality of life. These results provide useful policy implications for setting urban policy directions.

  • Developed countries have developed indicators of quality of life and are using them as indicators of policy decisions, and Korea is also developing and operating indicators of people's quality of life. One of them is a lifestyle-oriented SOC, a policy that aims to improve the quality of life of the people by improving living infrastructure. This study aims to focus on subjective happiness among people's quality of life. The elderly are a relatively marginalized class in the national policy, and this study aims to analyze the effects of the elderly's residential environment on quality of life, housing satisfaction, and happiness. The purpose of this study is to provide useful implications for urban planning and related policy making by examining the structural relationship of whether the individual-environmental fit perceived by the elderly affects housing satisfaction and subjective happiness, and by analyzing the mediating effect between housing satisfaction and subjective happiness. As a result of the study, it was found that convenience, comfort, and public welfare of personal-environment suitability affect housing satisfaction and subjective happiness, and housing satisfaction affects subjective happiness. Also, it was analyzed that housing satisfaction had a mediating effect in the relationship between comfort, public welfare, and subjective feeling of happiness.

  • Individuals' language use has been hypothesized as a useful tool for the analysis of psychological aspects. This study examined relationships between language use and their subjective well-being, which consists of life satisfaction and feeling about life. For this, 126 college students wrote an essay and responded to the subjective well-being scale. Then we analyzed their writings through KLIWC (Korean Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count) and compared language use between the high and the low groups of subjective well-being. We also examined the relationships between KLIWC factors and the two sub-factors of subjective well being. The results shows that various individual factors of KLIWC reflect participants' subjective well-being and provids preliminary descriptive data on language use and subjective well-being.

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate patients' compliance with the hemodialysis and to investigate relationships between compliance, physiological parameters, and health-related quality of life. Data were collected from 220 patients at 27 local hemodialysis clinics. Compliance was measured with Sick-role Behavioral Compliance including interdialytic weight gain, serum potassium, and phosphorus. Health-related quality of life was assessed using Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-12. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Total compliance scored 2.92 out of 4 points on average. Among fifteen items, 'I keep on my dialysis schedule(time and date)' was the highest score. There were differences in the scores for compliance according to age, marital status, and dialysis period. Statistically significant correlations were found between four compliance items(medication, infection control, sleep, eating vegetable and fruit) and health-related quality of life. The results of the study indicate that a patient-centered approach would be helpful to improve quality of life in patients with hemodialysis. Healthcare providers need to understand the patients' perspectives by identifying what is important to patients and taking patient values and priorities into account.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of task-oriented circuit training(: TOCT) on upper extremity function and quality of life in chronic stroke patients. 20 stroke patients were randomized and divided into 2 groups: a preservation therapy group and TOCT group. The intervention sessions were given five times a week for four weeks. The Stroke Impact Scale(: SIS), EuroQual-5Domains(: EQ-5D), Fugl-Myer Assessment(: FMA), Motor Activity Log(: MAL), Canadian Occupational Performance Measure(: COPM) were used to measure the upper extremity function and the quality of life. In results, Two groups improved in upper extremity function after the intervention(p<.05). The EQ-5D scores of TOCT group were a significantly higher than preservation group(p<.05). The Ironing, Folding towels, Hang out towels on drying rack in COPM scores in both of performance and satisfaction have improved more than preservation group(p<.05). In conclusion, the TOCT has significant helpful effect to chronic stroke patients. These findings can be used to chronic stroke patient as an intervention for upper extremity function and quality of life.

  • A human in urban areas has depended on ecosystem for well-being, so it is important to evaluate urban ecosystem services which contribute significantly to human well-being. In this study we classified ecosystem functions and set indicators used for evaluating ecosystem services of urban park by Delphi method. As a result, it derived 12 items and 14 indicators of ecosystem services to evaluate them such as vegetable garden, canopy cover, biodiversity, and educational programs. Based on the derived evaluation indicators, the feasibility of the indicators was examined by applying to two urban parks, Maetan park and Seoho-Ggotme park, in Suwon City. We also suggested strategies to improve each ecosystem services based on the results of evaluation. It is significant to recognize unknown services in urban parks. The results can be used for improving urban ecosystem services consistently in response to current rapid urbanization. In the future, the city should make a master plan on ecosystem service on urban area, beyond urban park, considering both of quality and quantity.
