Geophysical surveys(electrical resistivity, self-potential, seismic refraction, GPR) were conducted to investigate the physical properties of the subsurface, and to delineate the flow channel of leachate from a AMD(acid mine drainage), buried rock wastes and tailings, and drainage pipes at an abandoned mine(Kwangyang mine). Especially in rainy season the sites appear to be abundant in AMD leachate, characterized by electrical conductivities of 0.98-1.10 ms/S. Electrical resistivity sections indicate that the leachate flows running in two directions at southern part rise up through the narrow fracture zones at the central part and contaminates the surrounding soil and stream. Such schematic features at the anomalous zone are well correlated with negative peaks in self-potential data, the limited penetration depth in GPR data and low velocity zone in seismic refraction data. Shallow high-resistivity zone is associated with the buried rock wastes which cause the diffractions in GPR image. In addition, the events at depth of approximately 1-1.25 m in GPR sections must be the metal pipes through which AMD is drained off to the inner bay.
Ultrafine $Mg(OH)l_2$and MgO powders were recovered from the waste solution containing $Mg^{++}$ which was a by-product of SHS (Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis)process. The optimum experimental conditions to prepare $Mg(OH)_2$were 13.0 of pH and 0.7M of $Mg^{++}$ content with addition of 9M of KOH as a pH regulator in acid leaching solution. Complete pre-cipitation of Mg(OH)$_2$from $Mg^{++}$ was realized at that condition. The dehydration reaction of the prepared Mg(OH)$_2$was studied by DSC, and the result was used for calcination process. In order to obtain MgO powder, dried Mg(OH)2 powder was calcined at $400~450^{\circ}C$. Particle size and shape of the prepared $Mg(OH)_2$and MgO powder was similar to those of the commercial powders.

To manufacture MG-Si (Metallurgical grade silicon) for use in various industries, Acid leaching experiments were performed to remove aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe), which are the most common impurities found in the silicon raw material. The silicon raw material was reacted with five types of acids (HCl, HF, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4) at 1, 2, 4, and 6M; 1M HF showed the highest Al and Fe removal rates, 97.9% and 95.2%, respectively. HF, however, resulted in an 18% reduced yield due to the silicon corrosion properties. To minimize the yield reduction, 2M HCl, which has a second removal ratio result, was mixed with 1M HF and applied to the silicon raw material. The experiment was conducted to select the optimal conditions for the mixed solution, which were $80^{\circ}C$ and 2hr. Under the optimal conditions, the residual Al and Fe concentrations were 141 ppmw and 93 ppmw, respectively, and it very easy to produce MG-Si with 3N grade purity.
A study has been made on the recovery & separation of cobalt and copper from organic acid leaching solution by solvent extraction. The experimental parameters such as the equilibrium pH, concentration of extractant and phase ratio were observed. Copper was extracted using LIX 84 and Cobalt was extracted using cyanex 272 and versatic acid 10. Experimental results showed that extraction percent of copper was 99% at above eq. pH 2.0 and then more than 90% of cobalt were extracted by cyanex 272 in eq. pH 6.0 and versatic acid 10 in eq. pH 7.5. Stripping of copper and cobalt from the loaded organic phases can be accomplished by sulfuric acid as a stripping reagent and 120 ~ 150 g/L of $H_2SO_4$ was effective for the stripping of copper and cobalt respectively. Finially, the basic optimal process for recovery of copper and cobalt from the bio-leaching solution was proposed.
To establish the evaluation method of Korean green tea, the correlation between physicochemical characteristics and sensory scores by the expert panels were investigated using 15 kinds of green tea manufactured in 1985 from Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Tannin, caffeine and total free amino acid contents of Korean green tea are higher than foreign ones, but the chlorophyll content is the highest in Japanese high grade green tea. Sixteen free amino acids including theanine were identified, and theanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and arginine contents which affect the brothy taste of green tea infusion were highest in Korean green tea. Sensory score for the color of Korean green tea infusion were lower than Japanese tea, but the flavor and taste were the best. In multiple regression analysis, the quality affecting factors of the green tea were elucidated as the caffeine$(X_1)$, chlorophyll b$(X_2)$, total free amino acid contents$(X_3)$, and L value$(X_4)$ of green tea infusion. The regression equation was expressed as $Y=-21.5820+2.1691X_1+0.0130X_2+0.2314X_3-0.0001X_4$ and then $R^2$ was 0.8919.
Mineral carbonation has been proposed as a possible way for $CO_2$ sequestration. The electric arc furnace slags consist of calcium, magnesium and aluminum silicates in various combinations. If they could be used instead of natural mineral silicates for carbonation, considerable energy savings and $CO_2$ emissions reductions could be achieved. Indirect aqueous carbonation of the slags consists of two steps, extraction of calcium and carbonation. Acetic acid leaching of electric arc furnace slags had been already studied to extract Ca in them, but it was reported that the carbonation of the extracted $Ca^{2+}$ in the leached solution would suffer from too slow kinetics, even at high pressure of $CO_2$. In this work, to develop more efficient extraction of the electric arc furnace slags, hydrochloric acid leaching to separate calcium from them was studied, and the results were compared with the acetic acid ones. The phase boundary between $Ca^{2+}$ and $CaCO_3$ in the solution with pH was determined by thermodynamic calculations. Hydrochloric acid was more effective than acetic acid for the extraction of Ca in electric arc furnace slag, and there is a possibility to recycle an unreacted hydrochloric acid in the leached solution by electrolysis or evaporation.
Optimum extraction conditions were investigated for the manufacture of Kiwi liqueur. Eight-weeks of storage was found to be the optimal extraction time for unsliced fruit, but 4 week of storage was found to be optimal extinction time when the fruit was sliced into 4 pieces. There were no changes in the brix, pH and total acidity during extraction. However 24.92 ppm of methanol and acetaldehyde was detected after extracting the liqueur after 8 week extraction time when the fruit was sliced into 4 pieces. The sensory evaluation showed the highest over all acceptability. The Kiwi liqueur was contained 48.90 mg% of total phenolic compounds, 16.7 mg% of vitamin C, 1.77% of malic acid, 1.18% of fructose, 1.12% of glucose and 0.08% of maltose at the optimum extraction conditions. The sensory quality of the Kiwi liqueur was estimated to be best when 0.035% of stevioside, 0.0085% of citric acid and 0.005% of salts were added to the Kiwi liqueur.
The recovery of valuable metals from waste lithium-based secondary batteries is very important in terms of efficiently utilizing earth's limited number of resources. Currently, the cathode material of a LiFePO4 battery, a type of battery which is widely used in automobiles, contains approximately 5% lithium. After use, the lithium in these batteries can be used again as a raw material for new batteries through lithium recycling. In this study, low-concentration sulfuric acid, a commonly used type of inorganic acid, was used to selectively leach the lithium contained in a waste LiFePO4 cathode material powder. In addition, in order to compare and analyze the leaching efficiency and separation efficiency of each component, the optimalleaching conditions were derived by applying a two-step leaching process with pulp density being used as a variable during leaching. When leaching with pulp density as a variable, it was confirmed that at a pulp density of 200 g/L, the separation efficiency was approximately 200 times higher than at other pulp densities because the iron and phosphorus components were hardly leached at this pulp density. Accordingly, the pulp density of 200 g/L was used tooptimize the leaching conditions for the selective leaching and recovery of lithium.
We investigated the effect of dry grinding of laterite on the extraction of nickel and cobalt. The major chemical compositions of the sample for this work were $SiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO. The sample contained 0.81% Ni and 0.02% Co. The major minerals of the sample were lizardite and quartz with minor amounts of forsterite and enstatite. The mean particle size, specific surface area and density of the ground sample decreased with increasing grinding time, while the amorphization of lizardite increased as identified by XRD analysis. The grinding enabled the extraction ratio of Ni and Co to increase by the breakdown of Mg-OH bonding in the lizardite structure. However, physical properties of quartz were not changed by grinding. The extraction ratio of Ni and Co increased with increasing grinding time. Approximately 80% of Ni and Co were extracted regardless of the kind of acid solutions when the sample was ground for 60 minutes.

This work studies the synthesis of birnessite (${\delta}-MnO_2$), a catalyst of oxidative-coupling reactions, from the powder of spent alkaline manganese batteries (SABP, <8 mesh) and evaluate its reactivity for 1-naphthol (1-NP) removals. Manganese oxides using commercial reagents ($MnSO_4$, $MnCl_2$) and the acid birnessite (A-Bir) by McKenzie method were also synthesized, and their crystallinity and reactivity for 1-NP were compared with one another. 96% Mn and 98% Zn were extracted from SABP by acid leaching at the condition of solid/liquid (S/L) ratio 1:10 in $1.0M\;H_2SO_4+10.5%\;H_2O_2$ at $60^{\circ}C$. From the acid leaching solution, 69% (at pH 8) and 94.3% (pH>13) of Mn were separated by hydroxide precipitation. Optimal OH/Mn mixing ratio (mol/mol) for the manganese oxide (MO) synthesis by alkaline (NaOH) hydrothermal techniques was 6.0. Under this condition, the best 1-NP removal efficiency was observed and XRD analysis confirmed that the MOs are corresponding to birnessite. Kinetic constants (k, at pH 6) for the 1-NP removals of the birnessites obtained from Mn recovered at pH 8 (${Mn^{2+}}_{(aq)}$) and pH>13 ($Mn(OH)_{2(s)}$) are 0.112 and $0.106min^{-1}$, respectively, which are similar to that from $MnSO_4$ reagent ($0.117min^{-1}$). The results indicated that the birnessite prepared from the SABP as a raw material could be used as an oxidative-coupling catalyst for removals of trace phenolic compounds in soil and water, and propose the recycle scheme of SAB for the birnessite synthesis.
