  • Complex terrain refers to irregular surface properties of the earth that influence gradients in climate, lateral transfer of materials, landscape distribution in soils properties, habitat selection of organisms, and via human preferences, the patterning in development of land use. Complex terrain of mountainous areas represents ca. 20% of the Earth's terrestrial surface; and such regions provide fresh water to at least half of humankind. Most major river systems originate in such terrain, and their resources are often associated with socio-economic competition and political disputes. The goals of the TERRECO-IRTG focus on building a bridge between ecosystem understanding in complex terrain and spatial assessments of ecosystem performance with respect to derived ecosystem services. More specifically, a coordinated assessment framework will be developed from landscape to regional scale applications to quantify trade-offs and will be applied to determine how shifts in climate and land use in complex terrain influence naturally derived ecosystem services. Within the scope of TERRECO, the abiotic and biotic studies of water yield and quality, production and biodiversity, soil processing of materials and trace gas emissions in complex terrain are merged. There is a need to quantitatively understand 1) the ecosystem services derived in regions of complex terrain, 2) the process regulation occurred to maintain those services, and 3) the sensitivities defining thresholds critical in stability of these systems. The TERRECO-IRTG is dedicated to joint study of ecosystems in complex terrain from landscape to regional scales. Our objectives are to reveal the spatial patterns in driving variables of essential ecosystem processes involved in ecosystem services of complex terrain region and hence, to evaluate the resulting ecosystem services, and further to provide new tools for understanding and managing such areas.

  • As Korean traditional peasant farming has come to a commercialization since 1970s, the spatial structure of Korean agriculture also has been gradually restructured by principle of not subsistance but economy. This epochal transformation of agriculture and its spatial structure in Korea are comparable with the first agricultural revolution in Europe. Facing this turning point, it is essential to redefine the nature and significance of agricultural geography in Korea through the review of the outcomes of about 200 studies published since 1950s in Korea of which twelve is concerned with locational analysis. The purpose of this study is to review the trend and characteristics of location studies on Korean agriculture. Major findings are as follows: (1) Since 1950s the location studies of agriculture recorded only 12 papers which occupy no more than 6% of studies of agricultural geography in Korea. This fewness suggests that the location study of agriculture in Korea is yet at the stage of beginning. (2) In spite of the fewness the studies, carried out mainly in 1980s, contributed considerably to clarify the locational characteristics of Korean agriculture especially in the spatial variations of crops, dairy farming and cropping system, the impacts of agricultural labors, the location strategy of mountain agriculture, and the responses of farmers to hazard. (3) In approach and methodology, two thirds of the studies has taken traditional empiricist view and other, positivist. And most studies adopted classic and neo-classic locational theories as their theoretical base in description and explanation. In degree of development, the location studies of agriculture in Korea seems to be about 20 years delayed compared to that of the advanced countries in terms of approach and methodology. (4) Such tradition of the location studies reflects not only the conservative nature of agricultural geography of Korea but also the early stage of capitalism of Korean agriculture.

  • Global warming has a significant impact on diverse ecosystems including agroecosystem through; changing of phenology, physiology and distribution. Monitoring of biological responses emanating from global warming is required to understand the challenges of biological diversity conservation posed by climate change. The Korean government selected four butterfly species as indicators of climate change in agroecosystem: Papilio xuthus, Pieris rapae, Colias erate, and Eurema mandarina. The aim of this study was to investigate the different monitoring methods of the butterflies in Korea and suggest a suitable monitoring method to track the population trends of butterflies in the agroecosystem. Butterfly monitoring was conducted in eight sites throughout Korea from April to October, 2018 using three survey methods: point census at rice paddy area, point census at the border between rice paddy and hill and line transect along the rice paddy and hill. Each method took approximately 30 min. to count the butterflies. A total of 4,691 butterflies and 92 species were counted: The most dominant species was Pieris rapae with a total count of 1,205 individuals followed by Polygonia c-aureum, Zizeeria maha, Colias erate, Cupido argiades and Papilio xuthus. Among the three census methods, the total number of species and individuals when using line transect method was statistically higher than in the other methods. However, the numbers of the four butterflies indicators showed no difference throughout three census methods. Based on the number of species and the total individuals butterflies in agroecosystem, we advocate for the application of line transect method as it can find more butterflies in agroecosystem. In addition, we advised for the implementation of education programs on the line transect method in butterfly identification to participants of the national monitoring program.

  • Weather is one of the important factors in the agricultural industry as it affects the price, production, and quality of crops. Upland crops are directly exposed to the natural environment because they are mainly grown in mountainous areas. Therefore, it is necessary to provide accurate weather for upland crops. This study examined the effectiveness of 12 forest soil factors to interpolate the weather in mountainous areas. The daily temperature and precipitation were collected by the Korea Meteorological Administration between January 2009 and December 2018. The Generalized Additive Model (GAM), Kriging, and Random Forest (RF) were considered to interpolate. For evaluating the interpolation performance, automatic weather stations were used as training data and automated synoptic observing systems were used as test data for cross-validation. Unfortunately, the forest soil factors were not significant to interpolate the weather in the mountainous areas. GAM with only geography aspects showed that it can interpolate well in terms of root mean squared error and mean absolute error. The significance of the factors was tested at the 5% significance level in GAM, and the climate zone code (CLZN_CD) and soil water code B (SIBFLR_LAR) were identified as relatively important factors. It has shown that CLZN_CD could help to interpolate the daily average and minimum daily temperature for upland crops.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influential factors of the runoff of water and hillslope erosion caused by the large-scale harvesting operation. It was carried out on harvested sites (13ha) and non-harvested sites(13ha) in Seoul National University Research Forest [(Mt.) Paekunsan], from 1993 to 1994. 1. The amount of runoff of water was increased as the unit of rainfall increases, and the amount of runoff on harvested sites was larger than that of non-harvested sites by 28% in the first year and 24.5% in the second year after harvesting. According to the multiple regression equation for surface runoff, unit and number of rainfall, amount of hillslope erosion and soil bulk density showed statistically significance($R^2$=0.91). 2. The amount of hillslope erosion on harvested sites was larger than that of non-harvested sites by 7 times during the first year of harvesting and 2 times during the second year. 3. The multiple regression equations for hillslope erosion showed that soil bulk density, surface runoff of water and unit of rainfall(these factors were not controllable) had statistically significance($R^2$=0.74). 4. Soil runoff in harvested and non harvested sites were maximum 6.7% and 1% of the amount of hillslope erosion, respectively during the first year of harvesting. And the second year of harvesting soil runoff in harvested and non harvested cites were maximum 5.7% and 1.9%of the amount of hillslope erosion. From the above results, when in planning for timber harvesting, the buffer strip-woods zone must be remained to diminish soil and water runoff and to preserve water quality.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the openness of erosion control dams situated near mountain stream. The ecological functions of erosion control dams analyzed by such openness for adequately protect and manage the diversity of species and to prevent disasters. The obtained results were as follows. When structurally modifying or changing non-permeable, gravity type dams with a passing rate of less than 1% into open-type dams, the passing rate increased by about 77 times more from 0.72% to 55.8%. Except for closed, gravity type erosion control dams that are constructed with a special purpose such as creating sand deposits and reservoirs, there is a need to construct and improve the dams into permeable type dams that can relatively satisfactorily perform various functions such as carrying soil and sand to the downstream region and create a ecological corridor upstream and downstream for fish and amphibians. The openness based on the blocking height of the erosion control dam varies depending upon the height of the base part and the depth of the substructural part. It must be designed based on the on-site conditions and the purpose of the construction. The functional types of erosion control dams based on the open form of the cross-section as follows: the fish traffic type, flood control type, reservoir type for forest fire control), non-permeability type for soil and rock blocking, net type for blocking the rock flow and the particle screen type.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information for the improvement of garlic cultivars. Local varieties of garlic were collected from 4 major production area in Korea and ecological characteristics were compared. The number of cloves per bulb showed a great variation in the range from 4 to 15. However, more than 70% of examined garlics had 6~8 cloves per bulb. Clove weight also differred between local varieties, thus, the range of clove weight was distributed from 1.0g to 7.6g and this tendency was also similar within a same local variety. Although clove weight was relatively higher in bulbs containing 6~8 cloves, bulb weight was higher in bulbs containing more cloves.
