Steam Gasification Characteristics of Oil Sand Coke in a Lab-Scale Fixed Bed Gasifier (실험실 규모의 고정층 가스화기에서 오일샌드 코크스의 수증기 가스화 특성)

  • Utilization and interest of unconventional fuel and process residue such as oil sand and its residue, oil sand coke, have been increased because of the continuous rise of fuel price and conventional fuel availability. In this study, the gasification of oil sand coke produced from coking process of oil sand was performed to utilize as an energy resource using lab-scale fixed bed gasification system. The combustion characteristics of oil sand bitumen and oil sand coke were investigated by using TGA and lab-scale gasification system was applied to reveal the characteristics of produced syngas composition with oxygen/fuel ratio, temperature and steam injection rate. Oil sand coke shows a high carbon content, heating value and sulfur content and low ash content and reactivity. In case of oil sand coke gasification, generally with increasing temperature, the amount of steam introduced and decreasing oxygen injection rate, $H_2$ content in product gas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. The calorific value of syngas shows about $2100kcal/Nm^3$ and this result indicates that the oil sand coke can be used as a resource of hydrogen and fuel.

A Study on Elemental Diffusion in Gilded Artifacts (도금 유물에서 확인되는 확산 현상에 관한 연구)

  • Four gilded bronze objects and a gilded silver object were examined for elemental diffusion between the gilding layer and the mating matrix. The gilded bronzes consist of three objects from three different historical periods, the Korean Three Kingdoms period, the Koryo and the Choseon periods and one from an unknown period. The gilded silver was from the Koryo period. The amalgam process seems to have been the major technique employed for all of them in gilding. The occurrence of substantial diffusion was observed in all but the anonymous object, particularly in the Choseon artifact where evidence was found that the diffusion phenomenon was intentionally utilized in gilding. The gold content in the gilded bronzes decreases gradually from surface to interior while the copper content increases to the interior, making it difficult to locate the boundary between the gilding layer and the matrix. This gradual change in composition must have resulted from elemental diffusion at elevated temperatures. The oxygen content negligible in the gilding layer precludes the possibility of corrosion being responsible for the varying composition. It is observed that non-uniform diffusion caused variation of colors in the surface of gilded bronzes. The change of colors induced by diffusion, which is always accompanied by the unique surface morphology and chemical compositions, is distinguished from the color change by corrosion. In the gilded silver object, diffusion of mercury was observed along with that of gold and silver.

Effects of Methanol Extract from Terminalia chebulae on Renal and Pulmonary Toxicities Induced by Paraquat in Rats (가자(Terminalia chebulae) 메탄올 추출물이 paraquat 독성에 의한 흰 쥐의 신장 및 폐조직에 미치는 영향)

  • Paraquat (1,1-dimethyl 4,4' -dipyridium dichloride; PQ) is a kind of herbicide. Terminalia chebulae (TC) has been used as a medicine in China and in Korea for treating illnesses such as diarrhea, collapsed anus, spasmodic, diphtheria, asthma etc.. This study was to examin new physiological activities of methanol extract of TC (TCM) on the toxicity of PQ. It was observed biochemical effects on the toxicity of PQ in kidney and lung tissues after treatment orally administered 100, 200, 300 mg/kg of TCM daily for two weeks. In the experiment related to the toxicity of PQ, we got following results: renal and pulmonary lipid peroxide contents, activities of aminopyrine N-demethylase, aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase were significantly increased in control group as compared with normal group, in the treatment of TCM the values were decreased as compared with control group. Activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase which are free radical scavenging enzymes were also increased in control group as compared with normal goup, but were decreased in TCM group as compared with control group. Collagen content and glucose-6-phosphatase activity in lung tissue were increased in control group as compared with normal, but was decreased in TCM group as compared with control group. From these results, we concluded that TCM can playa role as an effective agent to decrease toxicity of PQ.

Fuel Characteristics of Quercus variabilis bio-oil by Vaccum Distillation (감압증류에 의한 굴참나무 바이오오일의 연료 특성 변화)

  • The technology of fast pyrolysis is regarded as a promising route to convert lignocellulose biomass into bio-oil which can be upgraded to transportable fuels and high quality chemical products. Despite these promises, commercialization of bio-oil for fuels and chemicals production is limited due to its notoriously undesirable characteristics, such as high and changing viscosity, high water and oxygen contents, low heating value and high acidity. Therefore, in this study quality improvement of bio-oil through vaccum distillation had been targeted. A 600 g of cork oak(Quercus variabilis) which grounded 0.8~1.4 mm was processed into bio-oil via fast pyrolysis for 1.64 seconds at $465^{\circ}C$ and temperature of vaccum distillation(100hPa) was designed to control, $40^{\circ}C$, 50, 60, 70, and 80 for 30min. Bio-oil, biochar, and gas of pyrolytic product were produced to 62.6, 18.0 and 19.3 wt%, respectively. The water content, viscosity, HHV(Higher Heating Value) and pH of bio-oil were measured to 0.9~26.1 wt%, 4.2~11.0 cSt 3,893~5,230 kcal/kg and 2.6~3.0, respectively. Despite these quality improvement, production was still limited due to its notoriously undesirable characteristics, therefore continous quality improvement will be needed in order to use practical fuel of bio-oil.

Study of Hydrophobic and Barrier Properties of Vinyltriethoxysilane Modified Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) / Poly (Acrylic Acid) Films (비닐트리에톡시실란으로 개질된 폴리비닐알코올 / 폴리아크릴산 필름의 내수성 및 차단성 연구)

  • Aqueous poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution was modified by using hydrophobic vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) and then adding different amounts of poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) to the resulting solution. Thermal and mechanical properties, contact angle, water vapor transmission rate (MVTR) and oxygen gas transmission rate ($O_2TR$) of the film samples fabricated by these solutions were investigated. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the VTEOS-modified films was sightly increased and the value remained unchanged according to the amount of PAA. The tensile strength of the VTEOS-modified films was found to be 9.48~10.72 $kg/mm^2$ which showed no significant difference compared with that of PVA. The film prepared with VTEOS-modified PVA/PAA (= 90/10), of which the swelling and solubility were measured to be 198% and 0%, respectively, showed improved water-resistance. The MVTR and $O_2TR$ for the PET film (thickness 50 ${\mu}m$) coated with VTEOS-modified PVA/PAA (= 90/10) film (thickness 2.5 ${\mu}m$) were measured to be 11.04 $g/m^2/day$ and 3.1 $cc/m^2/day$, respectively.

Study on Biochemical Pollutant Markers for Diagnosis of Marine Pollution X. Changes in Oxygen Radicals and Their Scavenger Enzymes of the Mussel (Mytilus coruscus) in the South Sea (해양오염의 진단을 위한 생화학적 오염지표에 관한 연구 X. 남해산 홍합 (Mytilus coruscus)의 산소 라디칼 및 제거효소의 변화)

  • This study was designed as a part of efforts to investigate the biochemical pollutant markers for diagnosis of marine pollutions by changes in oxygen radicals and their scavenger enzymes of the mussel (Mytilus coruscus) in South Sea of Korea. Protein contents in muscle of cultured mussel in South Sea were remarkably lower (4-14%, respectively) than those of wild mussel in Pohang of East Sea. Superoxide radical activities in muscle of cultured in South Sea were significantly higher 82∼138% than those of wild mussel in Pohang. Hydroxyl radical formations in muscle of cultured mussels in South Sea were significantly 9∼25% higher than those of wild mussels in Pohang. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in muscle of cultured mussels in South Sea were significantly 16∼28% lower than those of wild mussels in Pohang. It is believed that significantly decrease of protein contents in muscle, remarkable increases of superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical in muscle of cultured mussels of South Sea may be used as a biochemical pollutant markers for diagnosis of marine pollutions. These results suggest that near-coastal water as well as neritic water of the south sea might be affected by pollutant.

Effect of Nitrogen Gas Packing and ${\gamma}-Oryzanol$ Treatment on the Shelf Life of Yukwa(Korean Traditional Snack) (질소치환포장 및 ${\gamma}-Oryzanol$ 첨가가 유과의 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effect of nitrogen$(N_2)$ gas packing and ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ treatment on the shelf life of Yukwa(Korean traditional snack). Yukwa were stored with $N_2$ gas packing(AN), $N_2$ gas packing with ${\gamma}-oryzanol$ treatment(ANA), and PE film packing with air(PE) for 20 days at $60^{\circ}C$. They were evaluated by POV, AV, conjugated diene, hexanal, color and sensory characteristics. The POV, AV and conjugated diene content increased abruptly in PE and AN, but increased slowly in ANA with prolonged storage. Higher sensory scores for Yukwa were found in ANA as compared to those in PE and AN. Hexanal content, yellowness and redness in AN were higher than those in ANA and PE. The moisture content, which is supposed to be related with browning of Yukwa, was 3 times higher in AN than that in PE. Oxygen content of each Yukwa pack, even in $N_2$ gas packing, increased remarkably as storage period increased because their highly porous, fragile and syrup-coated structure resulted in incomplete degassing before $N_2$ gas was flushed into package. Consequently, $N_2$ gas packing was inefficient, but $N_2$ gas packing combined with antioxidant(such as ${\gamma}-oryzanol$) treatment was effective for the extension of shelf life of Yukwa.

Effect of Processing Methods on the Chemical Composition of Panax ginseng Leaf Tea (고려인삼엽차의 제조방법에 따른 화학성분 조성)

  • Panax ginseng leaves are produced as the by-product when Panax ginseng roots were harvested. The Panax ginseng leaves was examed for the applicable possibility as the functional food. In this study, the changes in chemical composition of Panax ginseng leaves was examed by three methods as the hot-air dried(DRT), the aged tea(AGT) and the heat processed tea(HPT). The general composition of Panax ginseng leaves tea was shown as similar results in 3 different process methods. The level of the crude lipid and reducing sugar concentration were decreased slightly in HPT. The free sugar content of DRT was higher than the HPT and AGT. The existence of the higher content of free sugar composition in order are sucrose, fructose and glucose. The concentration of serine was the highest in the free amino acids, which were shown from 309.6 mg% to 336.6 mg%. The contents of free amino acid in Panax ginseng leaves made by DRT was higher than by AGT and HPT. The concentration of Ca was shown as the highest content among the minerals and was 2,115 mg%. The contents of minerals were existed in order of Ca, K, Mg, P, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn and Cu. But there were hardly any remarkable differences of mineral concentrations of Panax ginseng leaves tea made by different processing methods. The concentration of water soluble solid of Panax ginseng leaves tea processed by HPT was higher than by DRT and AGT. The concentration of ascorbic acid was shown the highest value of 424.4mg% in HPT. There was no differences in the fatty acid composition according to their processing methods. The concentration of palmitic acid was higher than that of other fatty acid. The order of fatty acid concentration were palmitic aicd, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, oleic acid and stearic acid, abundantly. As a conclusion, HPT was shown as the best process method for the production of Panax ginseng leaves tea.

The physicochemical properties of kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) as mushroom culture media source (버섯배지 재료로서 케나프의 이화학성 분석)

  • To investigate the usefulness of Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) as mushroom culture media source, we analyze physical condition and contents of nutritional components. The water absorption rate of Kenaf bast was 578% and it was 95% higher than that of poplar sawdust's. This was caused by Kenaf's porous cellular structure. so it could give more moisture and oxygen to cultured mushroom. Total carbon contents of Kenaf was 91.4%, it was quite higher than that of poplar sawdust, wheat bran and rice bran. Total nitrogen content was 1.76% and C/N ratio was 51.9. The content of NFE(Nitrogen free extract) was 46.6% and it was similar with rice bran. Cellulose content was higher than poplar but lignin content was lower. specially hemicellulose and pectin complex which more digestible carbon source to mushroom was 3.7% higher than poplar. Mineral component and amino acid contents were also maintained high compared with poplar. Fe was 4.2 times, P 3.2 times, K 2.2 times more and Ca was higher 16 mg/kg than poplar. The content of amino acid was quite more higher than poplar sawdust but lower than chaff. Consequently Kenaf had a good trait for basic support material in mushroom culture media and also had a good character as nutritional source.

Effects on Proliferation of Human Lung Cells induced by Fermented Silkworm thorn Fruits Based Kombucha (꾸지뽕-콤부차가 인체 폐세포 및 폐암세포의 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 실험은 콤부차의 발효시 에너지원으로 첨가되는 당(sucrose) 대신 꾸지뽕(Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau; silkworm thorn) 과일 발효액을 첨가하여 꾸지뽕-콤부차의 기능성을 구명하고자 하였다. 대조구인 콤부차는 끓여서 식힌 물 900mL에 홍차 2.4g을 넣어 한시간 동안 추출한 후 초기당도가 10°Bx가 되도록 sucrose를 첨가하였고, 처리구는 sucrose대신 꾸지뽕 과일 무게 대 sucrose의 비율을 1 대 0.9의 비율로 조제하여 발효시킨 꾸지뽕 발효액(당도 50°Bx)을 10°Bx가 되도록 희석하여 첨가하였다. 여기에 발효균인 SCOBY를 첨가한 후 실온에 3주간 보관하면서 1주일 간격으로 시료를 채취하여 총폴리페놀성 화합물 및 카테킨류 함량, 항산화 활성 및 인체 정상 폐세포주인 MRC-5와 폐암세포주인 A549의 세포 증식에 미치는 영향을 구명하였다. 발효 3주 동안 채취한 꾸지뽕-콤부차를 MRC-5 세포에 처리하였을 때 발효 2주까지는 꾸지뽕-콤부차가 대조구에 비해 약 10~30% 세포 증식효과를 보였고 발표 3주째에는 유사한 증식효과를 보였다. 폐암세포주 A549에 처리시에는 발효 2주째 대조구에 비해 낮은 증식율을 보였으나 그 차이는 크지 않았다. 이 결과는 꾸지뽕-콤부차가 인체 폐세포 증식을 촉진하나 폐암세포의 증식을 크게 억제하지는 않음을 의미한다. 총폴리페놀성화합물 함량은 대조구의 경우 발효기간이 경과함에 따라 증가하는 반면 꾸지뽕-콤부차는 조제직후 대조구에 비해 유의적으로 높은 함량을 보이다 서서히 감소하였는데 발효 2주째 대조구와 유사한 수준에 도달하였으며 3주째에는 대조구에 비해 낮은 함량을 보였다. 카테킨류(Epigallocatechin, Epigallocatechin gallate, 그리고 Epicatechin gallate, epicatechin)는 총 페놀성화합물과는 반대의 경향을 보였는데, 발표 2주까지는 꾸지뽕-콤부차의 함량이 유의적으로 높았다가 발표 3주째 크게 낮아졌다. 활성산소 제거능은 발효 2주째까지는 대조구에 비해 낮았으나 3주째 유의적으로 높아져 꾸지뽕-콤부차의 항산화활성은 카테킨류 함량에 비례함을 알 수 있었다. 기능성분 함량과 MRC-5 증식에 관한 상관분석시 총풀리페놀함량이 세포증식에 정의 상관관계를 나타내었다.
