  • There are many landslides occurred by typhoons and intense rainfall during the summer seasons in Korea. To predict a landslide triggering it is important to understand mechanisms and potential areas of landslides by the geological approaches. However, recent climate changes make difficult to predict landslide based on only conventional prediction methods. Therefore, the importance of a real-time monitoring of landslide using various sensors is emphasized in recent. Many researchers have studied monitoring techniques of landslides and suggested several monitoring systems which can be applicable to the natural terrain. Most sensors of landslide monitoring measure slope displacement, hydrogeologic properties of soils and rocks, changes of stress in soil and rock fractures, and rainfall amount and intensity. The measured values of each sensor are transmitted to a monitoring server in real-time. The ultimate goal of landslide monitoring is to warn landslide occurrence in advance and to reduce damages induced by landslides. This study introduces the current situation of landslide monitoring techniques in each country.

The purpose of patent analysis is to understand landslide hazard technology trends and to develop new advanced technology. This study searched patent data using key words related to landslide monitoring and detection in Korea, the USA, Japan, China (Hong Kong), Europe, and Taiwan. The patents were divided into five main categories and five to seven subcategories in each main category and analyzed by year, country, and applicants. The results were utilized to derive a portfolio of promising technologies for each country. The analysis results will also contribute to the development of more effective research strategies and to categorize research findings from previous studies on landslide hazards.

  • In this study, the applicability and practicality of landslides monitoring by using wireless sensor network (WSN) was analysed. WSN system consists of a sensor node for collecting and transmitting data using IEEE 802.14e standard, a gateway for collecting data and transmitting the data to the monitoring server. In the topology of the sensor network, a highly flexible and reliable mesh type was adopted, and three testbeds were chosen in each location of Seoul metropolitan area. Soil moisture sensors, tensiometers, inclinometers, and a rain gauge were installed at each testbed and sensor node to monitor the landslide. For the estimation of the optimal network topology between sensor nodes, the susceptibility assessment of landslides, forest density and viewshed analysis of terrain were conducted. As a result, the network connection works quite well and measured value of the volumetric water content and matric suction simulates well the general trend of the soil water characteristic curve by the laboratory test. As such, it is noted that WSN system, which is the reliable technique, can be applied to the landslide monitoring.

  • In recent years, Korea has witnessed an increase to natural disasters such as landslides due to localized sudden and intensive rainfalls. Thus there have been researches on surface displacements to detect and monitor displacements in the areas prone to landslides by using high-precision and density numerical elevation data from LiDAR, which is an advanced 3D measuring equipment. However, the commercial software to process large-capacity LiDAR data, is expensive and difficult to be applied to specialized tasks such as analysis of landslide. In addition, there are no measures for many users to easily access diverse spatial information related to landslides and put it to intuitive uses. Thus this study developed an application program to analyze landslides by processing time series LiDAR data and intuitively serve many users with information about the topography and landslides of given areas. It analyzed the current state of landslides in the subject region through case study and proposed that 3D-based landslide and topography information can be served intuitively.

  • Recent international and national research trends in landslide hazards were analyzed by performing a literature search of relevant scientific journals. For obtaining data from Korea, we used 'Information for Environmental Geology' (IEG), which covers 17 journals in the field of environmental geology. A total of 54 articles related to landslide hazards were found in 5 journals published in the period 2000-2012. The most common topic was landslide prediction or susceptibility (29 articles), followed by landslide mechanisms. For international information, we analyzed 1,851 articles from the 'Web Of Science' published from 2003 to the present. Researchers in Italy have published the greatest number of papers in this field, while papers from Korea rank first in terms of the citation index.

  • Korea has a large number of landslides due to localized torrential downpours and typhoons in summer, causing great human damage and economic losses. In particular, most roads in the Gangwon area are located in mountains, making them expose to a great risk of landslide. Therefore, it is urgent to prepare countermeasures to prevent these landslides. Necessary for that are various slope investigation and high-tech observation techniques for slope maintenance. Recently there have been slope observation techniques using optical fiber sensors, GPS, CCD cameras, Total Station and satellite images; however, these are not used much due to poor economic feasibility, low accuracy and efficiency. This study evaluated accuracy of displacement extraction of model slopes using terrestrial LiDAR to determine its application to landslide monitoring. As a result, it can measure several mm of minute displacement with high accuracy and help to rapidly obtain geographical features of slope.

  • This paper proposes a model of the real time monitoring system based on Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) for the detection and prediction of landslides. For this purpose, the real time monitoring system with tilting sensor and USN was set up and the performance was conducted. The performance was accomplished by conducting both field examinations and the experimental evaluation of the monitoring system. The results of this study show that the angle $0^{\circ}$, $-10^{\circ}$, $-20^{\circ}$ and $0{\sim}-30^{\circ}$ of sensor position detected by the sensor module coincide with the data measured from USN monitoring system by giving a sampling time 100[msec]. Consequently, the proposed model of the real time monitoring system with tilting sensor based on USN will be widely used as a monitoring system in the exposure to dangerous landslide regions.

  • Domestic slope related measuring system are mainly depending on manual and visual measurements and technical development for natural slopes is poor since the technology is developed focusing on artificial cut slopes. In addition, landslide with a debris flow is occurring frequently due to recent climate abnormally and heavy rains but early forecasts and prevention of disasters are in poor condition. Therefore, construction of ubiquitous sensor network (USN) capable of detecting dangers of landslide for rapid countermeasures is necessary. In this study, new measurements devices and measurement management techniques in compliance with domestic conditions are prepared by establishing ubiquitous based landslide monitoring system and standards of measurement management.

  • The displacement of slope is a key factor in predicting the risk of a landslide. Therefore, the slope displacement should be continuously observed with high accuracy. Recently, high-tech equipment such as optical fiber sensor, GPS, total station and measuring instrument have been used. However, such equipment is poorly used in fields due to economics, environment, convenience and management. Because of this, development of substantial observational techniques for varied slope observation and field applications is needed. This study analyzed the possibility of terrestrial LiDAR for slope monitoring and suggested it as information-obtaining technique for slope investigation and management. For that, this study evaluated the monitoring accuracy of terrestrial LiDAR and performed GRID analysis to read the displacement area with the naked eye. In addition, it suggested a methodology for slope monitoring.
