  • In order to get the fundamental information that could be useful to judge the potentiality of occurrence of rapid shallow landslide in the objective slope, factors selected on Jinhae regions in Korea, where many landslides were caused by heavy rainfall of daily 465 mm and hourly 52mm in August 1979, was carried out through the multiple statistics of quantification method (II) by the electronic computer. The net system with $2{\times}2cm$ unit mesh was overlayed with the contour map of scale 1:5000. 74 meshes of landslides and 119 meshes of non-landslide were sampled out to survey the state of vegetative cover and geomorphological conditions, those were divided into 6 items arid 27 categories. As a result, main factors that would lead to landslide were shown in order of vegetation, slope type, slope position, slope, aspect and numbers of stream. Particularly, coniferous forest of 10 years old, concave slope and foot of mountain were main factors making slope instability. On the contrary, coniferous forest of 20-30 years old, deciduous forest, convex slope and summit contributed to the stable against Landslide. The boundary value between two groups of existence and none of landslides was -0.123, and its prediction was 72%. It was well predicted to divide into two groups of them.

  • Soil moisture is critical for understanding the spatial-temporal variability of hydrologic processes. The distributions of soil moisture have been explored along transect line in hillslope hydrology. In this study, we measured several soil moistures along transect lines during ten-month period at a hillslope located the Cheong-mi catchment. The soil moisture properties were expressed by simple statistical methods (average, standard deviation, and recession slope) and analyzed in terms of soil depths and transects from the seasonal context. Supplementary studies were also performed about the effect of location, topography and soil texture to the soil moisture responses. The spatial distributions of average soil moisture at deep soil layer were distinguished from those at near surface due to the possibility of expected factors such as subsurface lateral flow from upslope, preferential flow and existence of bedrock. The soil moistures in combined line affected from significant contribution of upper transect line were relatively higher(wetter), low variability compared to those in other transect lines and seemed to be under stabilization process. There are confirmed heterogeneity of soil moisture variation related with preferential flow and significant influence of soil texture for soil moisture properties in upslope.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the mechanical properties of soil and the slope stability on the fill slope of forest road constructed in the regions which consist of igneous and metamorphic rock area. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Soil type by Unified Soil Classification System(USCS) was classified as SW in soil slope, GP in weathered rock slope, GP in soft rock slope for both types of parent rock, but gravelly soil slopes in igneous and metamorphic rock area were classified as SP and GW, respectively. 2) Dry unit weight was $1.34g/cm^2{\sim}1.59g/cm^2$, specific gravity 0.57~0.61, and void ratio 0.66~0.93 in the case of igneous rock area, a dry unit weight was $1.35g/cm^2{\sim}1.51g/cm^2$, specific gravity 2.67~2.77, and void ratio 0.78~1.01 in the case of metamorphic rock area. 3) The strength parameters such as internal friction angle(${\phi}$) and cohesion(c) were selected and tested for slope stability analysis. ${\phi}$ and c of soil in igneous rock area were within the range of $29.51^{\circ}{\sim}41.82^{\circ}$ and $0.03kg/cm^2{\sim}0.38kg/cm^2$, respectively, and $21.43^{\circ}{\sim}41.43^{\circ}$ and $0.05kg/cm^2{\sim}0.44kg/cm^2$ in metamorphic rock area, respectively. 4) Result of the slope stability analysis of forest road showed that, in the weathered rock slope of igneous rock and the weathered rock and soil slope of metamorphic rock area, the possibility of slope failure was high as safety factor was below 1.0.

  • We recorded the movement of wildbirds nine times at Hoam 1st Tunnel, Kkachisan Park, Deungneung pass to compare the movement between eco-corridor and neighboring crossing road from June to September, 2006. Among three areas, birds did not prefer the eco-corridor at pass type such as Kkachisan Park and Deungneung pass, however number of species and individuals were high at the eco-corridor at Hoam 1st Tunnel. Over 90m width and the slope location of eco-corridors can be beneficial for wild birds to enhance the movement along eco-corridors between isolated two patches. Average foliage volume under two meters showed the relation with bush nesters, and that from 7 to 8m had the highest relationship with canopy nesters. In Seoul city, target species should be considered at the construction of eco-corridors according to site characteristics, but Paradoxornis webbianus could be suggested as a main target species at eco-corridors. To enhance the movement of diverse wildbirds, we would implement that eco-corridors could be located at the slope area with the size of 1ha (over 90m width), eco-corridors could be planted and managed with the high foliage volume of shrub layer under twometers and canopy layer over 8 meters.

  • Habit type classification based on the polyclimax and discontinuum concept applied to Mt. Kasan forest. The results obtained were summirized as follows. 1. PIDE/RHSC H.T. : Pizzas densiflora is a topographic climax which is distributed in a ridge and a upper slope. Rhododeudron schlippenbachii is well represented in the undergrowth (average coverage 21%). 2. CALA/CAAR H.T. : Carpinus laxiflora is distributed in a low slope and adjoined to Pinzrs densiflora of a upper slope and a ridge. Calamaglotis aruredinacea is well represented in the undergrowth (average coverage 10%). 3. • The effect of relations parameters on the declination gradient of trees was studied in natural forest of Quercus variabilis, Quercus ${\times}$ grosseserrata, Quercus aliens, and Quercus dentata grown at various slope gradient. The declination gradients of trees were effected by the species, slope gradient, and direction of slope, but not effected by density and height in all species. The species shows a superior factor effecting declination gradient of trees compared with other relations parameters, and next effective factor was slope gradient. Especially in all of slope gradient, the declination gradient of Quercus ${\times}$ grossesserrata was highest.

  • The characteristics of forest environmental factors were analyzed using the quantification theory (I) for prediction of the suitable area of erosion control dams. The results indicated that sediment discharge in small forest catchments was significantly correlated with dredging passage (0.7495) and age class (0.6000). In contrast, area (0.3416), slope gradient (0.3207), rainfall (0.3160), altitude (0.2990) and soil type (0.2192) were poorly correlated. Following quantification theory (I), we developed a selection decision table for erosion control dams based on sediment discharge rate as class I (highly suitable site, greater than 2.2496), class II (suitable site, 1.1248~2.2495), and class III (poorly suited site, lower than 1.1247).
