  • The scattering characteristics of a prime-focus offset-parabolic antenna are analyzed using UTD. First, ray tracing method is used to locate the shadow boundaries, and then UTD is utilized to evalute the far-zone scattered magnetic field pattern. The field components included in the UTD analysis are the reflected, edge diffracted and creeping waves. The effects of circular caps attached to both edges of a prime-focus offset-parabolic antenna are investigated by comparing the scattered magnetic field patterns with those of a knife edge parabolic reflector.

  • The acoustical scattering characteristics of a target are influenced by the material properties and structural characteristics of the target, which are critical information for acoustic detection and identification of underwater target. In particular, for thin elastic target, unique scattered signals are generated around the target by the Lamb wave. In this paper, the results of scattered signal measurement of aluminum spherical shell in the water tank using the stepped frequency sweep sine signal are presented. In particular, the scattering of the water-filled aluminum spherical shell is compared with that of the air-filled one both theoretically and experimentally. The difference of the scattered signals are analyzed using the pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution in terms of average frequency, frequency distribution, and energy of the scattered signal. The result shows that all observed parameters increased when the aluminum sphere was water-filled, and it is well matched to the theoretical expectation.

  • The M$\sub$2/ tide near Cheju Island in studied on the bases of a scattering of incident tidal wave by an elliptic island in an ocean of constant depth. The amplitudes of incident and scattered waves are determined from the required boundary condition and by the least squares fit of the model to the tidal observations at 7 stations in the island. The tidal chart for M$\sub$2/ tide near the island is analytically constructed.

  • In ultrasonic testing, flaw signal from which quantitative information on flaws is determined is influenced by 3 factors : (1) the incident wavefield.produced by the transducer, (2) the scattered waves produced by flaws, and (3) the reception of the scattered waves back at the transducer. So even small changes in transducer performance due to aging or unexpected damages can produce the changes in the characteristics of flaw signal and finally the changes in the quantitative information on flaws. Thus a reliable calibration method of transducer performance is desired. Recently, theoretical models for ultrasonic testing have been employed as reference standards for the calibration of transducers which are considered as circular planar piston sources in the most of cases. But this simplification cannot be applied to partially damaged transducer which has lost their symmetry in performance, even not in appearance. Unfortunately there has been no reliable practical model which can be used for the calibration of partially damaged transducers. Here a pulse-echo testing model for partially damaged ultrasonic transducers was developed with experimental verification. The experimental responses agree very well with the theoretical prediction. So we expect that this model can be served as a theoretical reference standards for transducer calibration.

  • The space harmonics generated by a plane-wave incident upon a multi-layered dielectric grating can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). To clarify these effects, we examine the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT). The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, we confirm and generalize previous research that has occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TM mode.

  • A method is proposed to characterize single-fiber composite interphases from the frequency-domain characteristics of scattered ultrasonic waves, and its feasibility is investigated theoretically. It has been shown that the locations and magnitudes of the peaks and valleys in the frequency domain are affected significantly by the interphase properties, which may indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Although the frequency-domain behavior is basically associated with the resonance of the fiber-interphase system, it is not dominantly affected by the scatterer's resonance unlike that in the case of acoustic wave scattering. Therefore, the conventional acoustic resonant scattering theory is not directly applicable to the characterization of composite interphases. In order to solve the inverse problem of predicting the interphase properties from the frequency-domain characteristics of the ultrasonic scattered waves, an artificial neural network has been constructed. This approach has demonstrated reasonable accuracy in most cases considered in this study.

  • Analytic solutions are derived for wave scattering by a semi-infinite breakwater or a breakwater gap with partially reflective front and fully reflective back. The water depth is constant and a regular wave train is normally incident to the breakwater. Wave scattering is studied based on the linear potential wave theory. The governing equation is transformed into ordinary differential equation by using the method of variation of parameters and coordinate transformation. Comparison with finite element numerical solution shows that the analytic solution obtained in this paper gives quite good results. Using the analytic solution, the tranquility of harbor entrance is investigated by changing the reflection coefficient at the breakwater.

  • The propagation of coherent time-harmonic elastic L-and SV-waves is studied in a medium with random distribution of cylindrical inclusions. The purpose of the research is to characterize the dynamic elastic moduli and the attenuation properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The cylindes representing the fibers are assumed to be distributed in parallel with each other and the direction of incident waves are normal to the cylinder axes. A multiple scattering formula using the single scattering coefficients in conjunction with the Lax's quasicrystalline approximation is derived from which the dispersion relation for such medium is obtained. In order to formulate the multiple scattering interaction between cylinders, the pair correlation functions are generated by the Monte Carlo simulation technique. From the numerically evaluated complex wavenumbers, the propagation speed of the average wave, the coherent attenuation and the effective elastic moduli are presented as functions of frequency and fiber volume fraction.
