  • Objectives: This study was performed to identify the associations of social capital with suicidal thoughts and attempts in Korean communities with poor health. Methods: We used the data from community health interviews conducted at 40 administrative sections (dong, eup, or myeon) with high mortality from August to October in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as part of the Health Plus Happiness Plus Projects in Gyeongsangnam-do Province. The 8,800 study subjects composed of 220 adults systematically sampled from each administrative section were asked if they had thought about suicide or had attempted suicide within 1 year. The social participation was measured with 'participation in formal and/or informal group' and trust using responses to three questions about trust of others. Results: The prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempt within 1 year were 10.4% and 0.8%, respectively. The logistic regression analysis revealed that those who participated in only informal groups, or had highest trust level reported less suicidal ideation, or attempt after adjusting for socio-demographic factors (sex, age, marital status, occupation, and food affordability), self-rated health, and health behaviors (smoking, alcohol drinking, and exercise). Conclusions: This study suggested social capital such as social participation and trust was associated with less suicide ideation and attempt. More studies are warranted for the association of social capital with suicidal behavior.

  • The object of this study is through an empirical analysis, how cultural capital at the individual level and social welfare expenditure at the national level affect the life satisfaction of the elderly. In this study method, a Hierarchical Linear Model(HLM) analysis was performed on 3,297 elderly people aged 65 and older and 9 OECD countries. As a result of analysis, first, it was confirmed that life satisfaction and social class had a significant effect. Therefore, in to increase the satisfaction of the life of the elderly, policy and practical intervention measures that can narrow the gap between social classes should be prepared. Second, the old-age pension and survivor's pension had no significant effect on life satisfaction. However, as a result of the interaction, social class has a positive effect on life satisfaction, and it was confirmed that the lower the income inequality, the more positive the life satisfaction was. In conclusion, this implies that both individuals and countries should make efforts to variously increase the life satisfaction of the elderly.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine factors of FDI inflows which positively influence economic development. While MNCs ultimately decide on which country to engage in FDI, it can be affected by the general investment environment of host countries. Thus, it may be closely linked to national macro socio-economic factors. In the fixed-effect panel regression analysis using 30 years of data of 13 developed countries and 15 developing countries, results indicate that labor redemption exerts the greatest influence on global FDI inflows; this implies that FDI decisions are based on locations featuring higher productivity by the reduction of labor costs. According to the level of economic development, the motive of FDI inflows differs. In developed countries, GDP, government expenditure and consumer expenditure exert the greatest influence on FDI inflows; which shows characteristics of market seeking and horizontal investment. However, in developing countries, labor redemption and human capital exert the greatest influence on FDI inflows; which shows characteristics of efficiency seeking and vertical investment.

  • I describe the complex support systems around the world, focusing on their importance for economic growth and fiscal sustainability. Familial transfers for old age support are somewhat significant in some Asian economies including Korea, although they deteriorate quite rapidly. Public transfer systems are less significant in Korea compared with most OECD member countries. This is important because Korea has had the opportunity to develop sustainable systems less encumbered by obligations made to current and future generations. Relying on accumulated assets rather than transfers helped countries create capital-intensive economies that can maintain standards of living. This is true for Korea, but the question of how the labor and capital market will respond to the rapidly changing social welfare system remains as a critical question.
