  • The present study aims to investigate the effects of bicultural characteristics and social capital on psychological adaptations such as depression and self-esteem. A survey was conducted on 295 foreign-born mothers and their 305 children, ranging from third to sixth grade in elementary school up to seventh to ninth grade in middle school, residing in South Korea's seven major cities, including the city of Seoul. The results of this research are the following: 1) With regards to factors that influence depression among children in a multicultural family, less support from a friend leads to a larger exposure to multicultural programs. Also, the lower the perceived income level of his or her family, greater is the state of the child's depression. 2) Significant factors that influence self-esteem for multicultural children are friends' support, level of mothers' Korean language proficiency, teachers' support, and numbers of multicultural programs. Two implications may be addressed from this study. One is the need to consider bicultural characteristics and social capital to enhance psychological adaptability for children raised in multicultural families. Another is to apply social support characteristics such as friends' and teachers' support to multicultural programs.

  • As social network service(SNS) environments have been changed and increased, people perceive SNSs as a part of their daily lives. Therefore mutual communication activities based on the Internet and its influences are expanding continuously. This paper explored the difference between consumers' emotional well-being level and social capital formed through SNSs. Given that the reason of using SNS and its utilization can be different depending on consumers, this paper also examines generation differences. Hence, we examine how the forms of emotional well-being and social capital in SNSs can be different according to each generation. We conducted a survey targeting the consumers who have an experience of using online SNS and looked into the effects of emotional well-being and social capital among generations using eighty three valid samples. In this study, we find that there are differences on the effects of the sizes and the types of social capital formed through SNS, depending on the generations. In particular, the size of social capital from younger generation was larger compared to the older generation and bridging social capital, one of social capital types, was also bigger in the younger generation compared to the older generation. Although general emotional well-being was not differentiated among the generations, we could find a generation difference by showing that older generation's negative well-being, one of emotional well-being types, was more sensitive than younger generation. Based on such results, this paper proposes SNS utilization plan sub-divided by generations, suggesting management direction of online social networks.

  • In the knowledge-based economy highlighting the importance of human capital, there has been a growing interest in human capital externalities as a fundamental engine of growth and development of a region. The purpose of this study is to analyze human capital externalities using 3-level hierarchical linear model(3-HLM), decomposing determinants of wages into three levels involving workers(level-1) nested within firms(level-2) nested within regions(level-3). This study separately estimates the effect of the average education level on the wages by three different schooling groups on the assumption that the intensity of knowledge spillovers varies with each group's schooling level. The main results are as follows; First, the coefficient of the average education level of a region shows 0.044, indicating that one-year increase in the average level of schooling could increase average individual earnings by 4.4%. Secondly, the external effects of human capital on three different schooling groups are considerably different, raising less than high school graduates' wages by 3.0%, college graduates' wages by 4.7%, and graduate schools' wages by 11.8%, respectively. Thirdly, well educated workers are much more sensitive to the variation of the regional education level than less educated ones when we apply the shares of each schooling group as alternative measures for the average level of education. Such findings of this study draw an implication that local governments could speed up regional economic growth in the knowledge-based economy by not only raising total human capital stock in a region but building the close networks that promote productivity-enhancing human capital external effects.

  • This study conducted a survey research in order to prove the influence of public libraries on the creation of social capital. The analysis showed that the use of public libraries is generally focusing on information activities on a personal level and it is not extended to establish social relationships or form social trust between people on social level. If the personal information activities in public libraries are expanded to share information and opinions with other people, however, it can establish social relationships across people mediated by public libraries. It also has the possibilities to induce library users to participate reciprocal activities on social level. As a result, the information activities in public libraries on personal level can be extended to social levels mediated by public libraries, which can affect the creation of social capital. Based on these results, public libraries need to consider the social responsibilities on creating social capital as well as supporting information activities of members of society.
