  • In this research, the different scenes of each film, the Korean film <The man from nowhere> and the Indian film <Rocky Handsome> are analyzed. Based on the analysis, with the cultural dimension theory of Geert Hofstede, the cultural differences of Korea and India are found. 4 cultural dimensions are applied for the analysis, 'Individualism-Collectivism', 'Masculinity- Femininity', 'Power of Distance', 'Indulgence-Restraint'. In conclusion, the characteristics of Korean society can be defined as 'Collectivism', 'Masculinity', 'Narrow power of distance', 'Restraint', while the characteristics of Indian society can be defined as 'Individualism', 'Femininity', 'Wide power of distance', 'Indulgence'. Additionally, it was confirmed that 'Action' and 'Love' can be identified as the most important cultural characteristics that can gain sympathy in both India and Korea. Of course, there is a limitation to generalize the whole society only through the analysis of two films. However, this study can be meaningful in understanding the culture of Korea and India with relativistic perspectives based on the analysis of two films which have similar narrative structures and main characters.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultural difference between eastern and western culture in the online community in view of Hofstede dimensions of national culture through social network analysis. And this study tries to interpret the cultural dimensions by using social network indexes. The results show every cultural dimension offered conflicting results except uncertainty avoidance. The eastern culture shows individualism, and low power distance compared to western culture in the online community. Moreover the communication speed of eastern culture is faster than western culture. But eastern culture shows high uncertainty avoidance in the online community similar to an offline culture. This results of this study show that because of certain differences between the offline and online culture, the typical framework we use to analyze offline culture should not be applied to analyze online culture. Therefore we believe that the most important contribution of this study should be related with the finding that we need very different approach to be able to correctly understand the prevalent culture in the online community than the one that we use in the offline community.

In order to achieve this, an in-depth interview of 13 foreign migrant workers in Gyeonggi-region was carried out by using purpose sampling and theoretical sampling together, and the interview was analyzed using grounded theory method. The analysis result demonstrated that foreign migrant workers understand Korean culture, learn Korean, and interact with Koreans through Taekwondo, which facilitates their acculturation into the mainstream society. Also, they were assimilated into their own subculture of being fascinated by the charms of Taekwondo and trying to become Taekwondo instructors by returning to their home country. Lastly, they built a social network and overcame tough labor and the difficulties of living in a foreign country through Taekwondo. This research is significant as it examined the role of Taekwondo that preserves Korean culture and checked its value, in terms of the adaptation of foreign migrant workers who take a part in the current rearrangement of Korean society into a multicultural society.

This approach, however, requires comprehensive research on not only phenomenal issues but also their fundamental causes and regional/cultural contexts as Design Thinking Process does. This study aims to draw implications for applying Design Thinking Process into the entire process of solving social problems, from field research, idea refinement, and solution design. Limitations of Design Thinking-based social problem solving are also drawn through comparative analysis on various cases. In conclusion, the process of refining ideas and developing product/service can be utilized by social enterprises, ventures, NGOs, etc. as a guideline in addressing social problems.

  • This study aims to identify work conflicts in Korean socio-cultural context by applying grounded theory. Survey has been conducted through in-depth interviews with 11 different employees from various occupational categories. Data collected from the survey were then analyzed based on the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin (1998), thus resulted in a paradigm model consisting of 31 categories, 63 subcategories, and 100 concepts by open coding. Axial coding was then conducted and the results were as follows. The causal condition was the 'character of an opponent'. Contextual conditions which affect the causal condition were 'situational characteristics', 'character of an opponent', 'character of oneself', and their 'mutuality'. 'Negative feeling' was the central phenomena of work conflict and action/interaction strategies were verified to be 'avoidance', 'expression', 'effort toward solving problems' and 'increasing conflict'. Intervening conditions were 'interrelation', 'intervention', and 'group/task characteristics'. The consequences were organized as 'conflict continuance', 'personnel change' and 'positive effect'. Through selective coding, 'managing with the conflict' was derived as core-category and three different types of management were classified. Ultimately, this study shows how employees work in Korea experience the work conflicts and what kinds of socio-cultural factors have influence on the work conflicts, which can supplement previous inadequate empirical research. Also, this study can provide implications and suggestions as a fundamental integrated model for the future empirical research on work conflicts.
