  • Antioxidant and cancer cell growth inhibition activity of hot water extract from five different varieties of Artemisia (A. Argyi H., A. iwayomogi Kitamura, A. Princeps Var Orien talis HARA, A. princeps Pampanini and A. annua L.) in Korea was studied. We determined the phenol and flavonoid contents and examined antioxidant assay, such as DPPH, NO radical scavenging, activity ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and bleaching inhibition activity in the ${\beta}$-carotene linolic acid system. Also, we performed HeLa and MCF-7 cancer cell growth inhibition assay of Artemisia extracts. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were the highest in A. iwayomogi Kitamura followed by A. Argyi H. DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest in A. Argyi H. at 50 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration, NO radical scavenging activity was more than 50% in A. Princeps Var Orien talis HARA, A. princeps Pampanini, and A. annua L. at 200 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration. FRAP was higher in A. Argyi H. and A. iwayomogi Kitamura. Antioxidant activity in the ${\beta}$-carotene linolinolic system was also higher in A. Argyi H. and A. iwayomogi Kitamura by 60.50% and 56.90% at 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration, respectively. In cancer cell growth inhibition activities at 400 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration, A. iwayomogi Kitamura showed greater than 80% on HeLa cell. A. princeps Pampanini and A. Argyi H. extract had growth inhibition activities greater than 80% on MCF cell. The results of this study suggest that the antioxidant and anticancer activities in various Artemisia are a promising source of functional food ingredients.

  • This study was performed to investigate the differences among three varieties of Mugwort by using the electronic nose. Volatile components from these products were discriminated by the $VaporPrint^{TM}$ without pretreatment. Pattern recognition was carried out, $VaporPrint^{TM}$ analysis showed the differences among locally produced ones. Polar derivative pattern for the collected mugwort using $VaporPrint^{TM}$ between Sajabalssuk and Sajuarissuk had no difference, but Ssajuarissuk nnd Injinssuk had a lot of difference. Thus aroma pattern between locally produced ones could be distinguished.

  • The aerial parts of Sajabalssuk (Artemisia princeps PAMPANINI, Sajabalssuk) was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$, successively. From the EtOAc fraction, three cycloartane-type triterpnoids and one ursane-type triterpenoid were isolated through the repeated silica gel, ODS and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. From the results of physico-chemical data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structures of the triterpenoids were determined as wrightial (1), wrightial acetate (2), 27-norcycloart-20(21)-ene-25-al-3${\beta}$-ol acetate (3) and ursolic acid (4). No report has been found for isolation of compound 3 in the literature so far, and compounds 1, 2 and 3 were the first to be isolated from Sajabalssuk (Artemisia princeps PAMPANINI, Sajabalssuk). Also, compound 1 showed Acyl-CoA:Cholesterol acyltransferase (hACAT-1) and hACAT-2 inhibitory activity with the $IC_{50}$ values of 33.0 and 45.0 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Compounds 2 and 3 inhibited hACAT-1 activity with the $IC_{50}$ values of 12.0 and 16.0 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively.

  • In the present study, we investigated the compositions, antioxidant activities and anti-tumor effects of Artemisia princeps Pampanini (APD) as well as blanched leaves (CNBD) and dried leaves (CND) from Cirsium setidens Nakai on HepG2 cells. Water and ash contents were increased in CND. Protein and lipid contents were increased in CNBD. K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Cu contents of CND were higher than those of CNDB and APD. P contents was significantly decreased in CND. Yields of CND was reached high levels, but TPC, TFC, acacetin, apigenin, cynarin contents, and antioxidant activity were higher in APD. Viability of HepG2 liver cells was significantly decreased in APD. Therefore, extracts of APD are more effective preventing the liver cancer than extracts of CND and CNBD.

(Deans and Waterman, 1993). • The extracts from natural and fermented products such as Artemisia plants, Rhodiola Salientness, fermented soybeans and soybean paste were used to investigate the whitening effect. 10 g of Artemisia plant were added to 300 mL of ethanol and extracted by sonification at room temperature for 3 h. The extract was further partitioned by the equal volume percent in the order of the n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate. 5 g of Rhodiola salientness was also added to 150 mL of methanol and extracted at the room temperature for 12 h. The effluents from a chromatographic column ($3.9{\times}250mm$, $C_{18}$, $15{\mu}m$) were collected and concentrated in two parts. The extraction of fermented soybeans and soybean paste were done by 60% ethanol. In this work, tyrosinase inhibitory activity and melanin inhibitory effect were measured to confirm the whitening effect. The water layer of Artemisia princeps Pampan showed the good inhibitory of antioxidant, while the hexane layer of Artemisia iwayomogi Kitamura and the chloroform layer of Artemisia princeps Pampan had the excellent melanin inhibitory effect. The Rhodiola salientness had the superior whitening effect to the arbutin in in-vivo melanin production ratio assay. However, the fermented soybeans and soybean paste did not show any whitening effect.
