Effect of Feeding Rye Silage and Feed Restriction on both Growth and Reproductive Performances in Replacing Gilts (후보돈에서 호맥 사일리지의 급여와 사료의 제한급여가 생산성과 번식능력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding rye silage and feed restriction on both growth and reproductive performances in replacing gilts. Twenty four replacing gilts (Landrace×Yorkshire, 67.63±1.17kg initial BW) were used in 49 d growth assay. Dietary treatments were included 1) CON(basal diet), 2) S15(15% feed restriction + ad libitum rye silage) and 3) S30(30% feed restriction + ad libitum rye silage). In growth performance, average daily gain and average daily feed intake were the highest in CON among treatments(P<0.05). Average daily silage intake was not significantly different between S15 and S30 treatments(P>0.05). Feed conversion ratio was the lowest in CON among treatments(P<0.05). Average silage intake of S15 and S30 treatments was increased as time goes by(P<0.05). While all gilts of S15 and S30 treatments became pregnant, one gilt of CON became pregnant. Also, first estrus and mating were occured earlier in S15 and S30 than those of CON. In conclusion, 15% feed restriction and feeding rye silage reduced growth performance, reached earlier to first estrus and increased pregnancy rate in replacing gilts.

Effects of Molasses Supplementation on the Quality of Galgeuntang Meal Silage and the Palatability in Korean Native Goats (당밀의 첨가가 갈근탕박 사일리지의 품질과 산양의 기호성에 미치는 영향)

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of molasses supplementation to silage materials in ensiling Galgeuntang (herbal medicine) meal on the quality of silage, and its palatability in Korean native goats. In experiment I, molasses was added at the levels of 0, 0.5, and 1.0% to Galgeuntang meal with three replicates per treatment. In experiment II, three 1.5-yr-old Korean native goats were used to measure palatability. In experiment I, lactic acid contents in molasses treatments were significantly(p<0.05) higher, and pH and butyric acid contents were lower than those of non-molasses treatment. In addition, molasses treatment increased total microbial cell counts in MRS medium for lactobacillus, but decreased total microbial cell counts in PDA medium for fungi. Molasses supplementation to silage materials increased in vitro dry matter disappearance. Molasses supplementation tended to increase silage intake in Korean native goat (experiment II), but the difference was not significant(p>0.05). It is concluded that molasses supplementation to silage materials in ensiling herbal medicine meal could improve its preservability and palatability, the higher the better.

Effects of Wrap Colors on the Quality of Round Baled Grass Silage (비닐색이 라운드베일 목초 사일리지의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of wrap color on the quality of round baled grass silage at experimental field of Grassland and Forages Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1997 to 1998. The experiment was consist of randomized block design with three replications. The treatments were three wrap color(white, black and light green). Wrap color did not affect chemical composition. Fiber components(ADF and NDF) of all silages after 2 months were higher than those of forages at ensiling. Among tested wrap colors, white color wrap resulted in lower pH than others (p<0.05) but, there was no significant difference between black and light green color. Dry matter content of light green color was the highest among warp colors, but there was no signifiant difference (p<0.05). Acetic and butyric acid contents of all plots. were not found significant difference among wrap color and wrap color did not influence lactic acid and organic acid concentration. The effect of wrap color on the quality grade and DM loss also were not found significant difference. Results of this study indicate that wrap color does not influence the quality of silage.

Effects of Wilting Days on the Quality of Round Baled Grass Silage (예건기간이 라운드베일 목초 사일리지의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of management practices on the qualify of round baled grass silage at experimental field of grassland and Forage Crops division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1997 to 1998. The experiment was consisted of three different wilting days : 0 (unwitted), 0.5 and 1 day with three replications. Crude fiber content was increased with prolonged wilting period, but other components did not show any trends. There was no significant differences in acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content between wilting periods, but there was significant difference in IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility) between one-day wilted and unwitted silage. Dry matter (DM) content changed from 23.7% to 40.5% in relation to prolonged wilting period. Wilting treatment caused a decrease in each organic acid content of round baled grass silage and an increase in the silage quality. Wilting also could reduce the DM loss. This study demonstrated that one-day wilting would be a recommendable method for making high quality round baled grass silage.

Evaluation of Fermentation Ability of Microbes for Whole Crop Barley Silage Inoculant (보리 사일리지용 미생물의 발효능력 평가)

  • This experiment was conducted to develop a new silage inoculant for barley at forage analysis laboratory, Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2000 to 2002. Barley is very important crop in Korea. The great part of them is utilized as forage. Generally, it contains a lot of grains that are feed of animal, especially whole crop silage in ruminant. Efficient lactic acid bacteria were isolated from good barley silage by plating MRS agar containing 0.02% sodium azide, and assessed by growing and acid producing ability in MRS broth. Four lactic acid bacteria were selected, and were found to be Gram positive, rods and catalase negative and were identified to be Lactobacillus plantarum on the basis of the biochemical characteristics and utilization of substrates. Barley was ensiled at dough stage following treatment with four lactic acid bacteria, commercial inoculant, and no additive (control). After 2 months, B2-2 bacteria inoculated silage was lower pH and higher lactic acid content than others treatments. The Flieg's score and grade of B2-2 bacteria treated silage were higher than commercial inoculant. According to this experiment, Lactobacillus plantarum B2-2 (NLRI 201) was recommendable for good silage inoculant of whole crop barley silage.

Effect of Pre-wilting Time on the Change of Moisture Content and Its Silage Quality at Different Harvest Stages of Whole Crop Oat (수확시기별 예건시간에 따른 귀리의 수분함량과 사일리지 품질변화)

  • This study was carried out to establish the optimum pre-wilting time for the high-quality silage production of whole crop oat. Plants were harvested for three time at intervals of 10 days after heading (DAH) and silage production was conducted after the pre-wilting treatment of 0, 4, 8 and 32 hours, respectively. Results showed to attain a proper moisture content for profitable silage production, which was an optimal content for making silage, by pre-wilting oat for 4 hours after harvest at either 20 days after heading or harvesting 30 DAH(days after heading). As the feed value of silage, the processing of proper moisture contents showed that crude protein contents were high and the entire feed value showed higher than others. High content of lactic acid and the low content of acetic and butyric acid showed on 60~65% the moisture conditions of silage. There was desired that whole crop oat was pre-wilting on 4 hours and harvested at about 20~30 DAH and after that, even if harvesting at once, it was judged that it could produce good quality silage.

Effect of Growth Stage and Variety on the Quality of Whole Crop Rice Silage (수확시기 및 품종이 총체 벼 사일리지의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effects of growth stage and variety on the quality of whole crop rice(WCR) silage at National Institute of Animal Science, RDA from 2004 to 2005. Two types of rice("Chucheong" for food and "Hamasari" for whole crop) were harvested at six different growth stages (heading, flowering, milk, dough, yellow ripen and fully ripen stage) and ensiled each harvest stages. Crude protein(CP) content of all whole crop rice silage was also decreased with progressed maturity at harvest and TDN(total digestible nutrient) content of WCR was increased. The average CP content of whole crop rice was higher than that of food rice. The contents of ADF(acid detergent fiber) and NDF(neutral detergent fiber) decreased with delayed harvest maturity. The content of TDN estimated from ADF content was increased with progressed maturity, but there was not found significant difference between rice varieties(p<0.05). The average pH value was 4.69 and it was increased with delayed harvest maturity. Acetic and butyric acid content were decreased, but lactic acid content was increased with progressed maturity. The experiments presented here show that all rice varieties may give a good quality silage. But some wrong practical method(grain loss, productivity, nutrient value, etc.) will make poor quality of rice silage. Therefore, dough stage of harvest maturity will be recommendable as proper harvest time for making high quality of whole crop rice silage in Korea.

Isolation and characterization of lactic acid bacteria for use as silage additives (사일리지 제조를 위한 유산균 탐색 및 특성연구)

  • Sixteen lactic acid bacterial strains were isolated from silage and cow dung samples, and characterized to identify their potential as silage additives. They were identified as the members of the genera Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Weissella, and clustered into nine groups based on the sequences of the genes for 16S rRNA, RNA polymerase alpha subunit, 60-kDa heat shock protein, and phenylalanyl-tRNA synthase alpha subunit. Among them, the three strains which were genetically similar to L. plantarum showed the fastest growth and pH decrease in MRS and rye extract media, the highest numbers of available carbohydrates, and the widest ranges of pH, temperature, and salinity for growth. In addition, they showed no amplified DNA products in the PCR examination targeting the genes for the production of biogenic amines, and the MRS media where they had been cultured showed relatively high inhibition effect against the growth of silage-spoiling microorganisms, including fungi, yeast, and clostridia. The results suggest that these strains are good candidates for silage additives. However, the rye extract media where the lactic acid bacteria had been cultured had no effect on or stimulated the growth of the silage-spoiling microorganisms, and the causes must be established for the practical use of the lactic acid bacteria as silage additives.
