  • The purpose of this study was to compare the body measurements of cyclists and non-cyclists and to classify cyclists' body types to offer basic information for the bicycle apparel manufacturer in Korea. The anthropometric data was collected including both direct and indirect measurements of 81 cyclists (40 female, 41 male) aged from 19 to 24. Anthropometric measurements were analyzed using percentiles, T-test, factor and cluster analysis. The results were as follows; Comparison of anthropomeoic data between cyclist and non-cyclist was to clarify that cyclists have bigger size than non-cyclists; especially the thigh circumference shows big differences. As the result of factor analysis, 5 factors, which explain 74% of variance, were extracted from all items for male and female cyclists. The results of cluster analysis classified body types into 3 groups. Cluster 1 among three female cyclist groups has biggest torso and had an erect back. Cluster 2 has small size among three female group and drooping shoulders. Cluster 3 has the bended forward shoulders and shows the protrusion back. In case of male cyclists, cluster 1 has thin body type owing to big height measurements and small girth measurements. Cluster 2 among three male groups has the biggest torso and thigh circumference. Cluster 3 has big forward angle of shoulders and shows the protrusion of the back as female cyclist.

  • This study provided basic data to develop functional and fitness cycling wear for cyclists. We analyzed the domestic and overseas cycling wear brand patterns for tops and tights as well as compared pads attached to tights. The results were as follows. The tops of the cycling wear were designed with cutting lines in the lateral or yoke in the back to reflect cycling posture. It is necessary to study if there is a difference in the air resistance or fitness of the athlete. The sleeve hem band affected by arm movement during cycling, proper sewing and band pressure are also important. The tights have a brand that does not insert a band in front of the waist in consideration of the cyclist's breathing. It should take into account methods of constructing a proper garment pressure that does not interfere with cycling. Analyzing the cycling pad indicated that the three-dimensional shape and size of the pad show many differences for each brand, indicating a difference in cycling movement suitability. In addition, many of the cutting lines should account for the productive aspects because of the high consumption of the fabric in order to design a pattern considering the cycling posture.

Depending on the results of the previous research, this study produced the tested jacket which was improved in material, pattern, and design. For the tested jacket, 100% polyester fabric excellent in strength, durability and abrasion-resistance was selected as a major material, and Cordura was used as a partial material to improve the strength and abrasion-resistance of the sleeve side lines, elbow and shoulder areas. The retro-reflection material was applied partially in order to improve visibility of the jacket in the night or in a dark place. A total of 7 pockets were composed in the jacket for the sufficient storage spaces. The functional design elements such as the 2-way zipper and the placket at the center front, the action pleats at the upper part of back armholes, the pit-zip at armpit were applied. In addition, the sleeve pattern was bent with the shape of elbow curvature in time of driving and the back length of the jacket was lengthened 4cm. As a result of the appearance assessment, there was a significant difference from the existing jacket in all items but chest size, shoulder width, cuffs circumference, and jacket hemline circumference. In motion adaptability and field activity appropriateness assessments, the assessment grade for all items was found to be commonly higher than that of the existing jacket, and thus, the tested jacket was assessed to be suitable for a motorcycle jacket design for the quick service transporters.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop up-cycling fashion design methods centered on discarded denim material for the study of original up-cycling design methods. Up-cycling fashion design work was developed using digital clothing technology. This is a recent hot topic among sustainable fashion design methods. Up-cycling fashion design expression methods (categorized as dismantlement, collages, dépaysement, grafting, weaving, and tearing) were centered on design methods. These methods create various three-dimensional modeling effects in planar forms, whereby five pieces can be applied to the fabric and digitally produced. The results are as follows: First, the use of discarded denim fabric for the development of up-cycling fashion design pieces enabled the recycling of existing resources, provided solutions to environmental pollution problems, and provided expansion opportunities for design processes for sustainable fashion products that expand the design value of denim products and their utility. Second, new eco-friendly fashion designs that attempt to achieve diversity in modern fashion trends could be presented through formative contemporary fashion produced by up-cycling work products. Third, up-cycling fashion design work is expected to provide opportunities for eco-friendly fashion design methods. This will expand the value of sustainable fashion design by recycling simple waste materials through the use of three-dimensional digital clothing technology and further through the presentation of expanded life cycles that extend product planning, production, and life cycles.
