Cooperative Architecture for Centralized Botnet Detection and Management (협업 기반의 중앙집중형 봇넷 탐지 및 관제 시스템 설계)

  • In recent years, cyber crimes were intended to get financial benefits through malicious attempts such as DDoS attacks, stealing financial information and spamming. Botnets, a network composed of large pool of infected hosts, lead such malicious attacks. The botnets have adopted several evasion techniques and variations. Therefore, it is difficult to detect and eliminate them. Current botnet solutions use a signature based detection mechanism. Furthermore, the solutions cannot cover broad areas enough to detect world-wide botnets. In this study, we suggest an architecture to detect and regulate botnets using cooperative design which includes modules of gathering network traffics and sharing botnet information between ISPs or nations. Proposed architecture is effective to reveal evasive and world-wide botnets, because it does not depend on specific systems or hardwares, and has broadband cooperative framework.

  • The information security (information security knowledge) industry is technology-intensive, high value-added industries. South Korea's response has excellent ICT skills and experience and skills in a variety of cyber attacks, has become a benchmark in the world. However, the small size of the domestic information security company, supporting infrastructure is lacking. Domestic information security industry is the primary condition to activate the export. In order to export it is necessary to develop for the Korean Cybersecurity Goods Menu for products, services and technologies of the domestic information security industry. Buyer Menu as well as foreign and domestic Seller, companies and governments know the details of the assets and product information security industry and is a prerequisite to sell. In this paper, I study the Korean Cybersecurity Goods Menu development.

A Study on security characteristics and vulnerabilities of BAS(Building Automation System) (BAS의 보안 특성 및 취약점에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, due to the importance of information security, security vulnerability analysis and various information protection technologies and security systems are being introduced as a countermeasure against cyber-attacks in new as well as existing buildings, and information security studies on high-rise buildings are also being conducted. However, security system introduction and research are generally performed from the viewpoint of general IT systems and security policies, so there is little consideration of the infrastructure of the building. In particular, the BAS or building infrastructure, is a closed system, unlike typical IT systems, but has unique structural features that accommodate open functions. Insufficient understanding of these system structures and functions when establishing a building security policy makes the information security policies for the BAS vulnerable and increases the likelihood that all of the components of the building will be exposed to malicious cyber-attacks via the BAS. In this paper, we propose an architecture reference model that integrates three different levels of BAS structure (from?) different vendors. The architectures derived from this study and the security characteristics and vulnerabilities at each level will contribute to the establishment of security policies that reflect the characteristics of the BAS and the improvement of the safety management of buildings.

  • Modern society is developing rapidly and technologies that provide convenience in living are developing day by day. On the other hand, the development of cyber attacks that threaten cybersecurity is developing faster, and it still adversely affects the industrial environment, and industrial damage is steadily occurring every year. Industrial security is an activity that safely protects major assets or technologies of companies and organizations from these attacks. Therefore, it is a situation that requires professional manpower for security. Currently, the manpower situation for security is staffed, but knowledge of the understanding and concept of industrial security jobs is insufficient. In other words, there is a lack of professional manpower for industrial security. It is the NCS that came out to solve this problem. NCS is the state standardized ability (knowledge, attitude, skills, etc.) necessary to perform duties in the industrial field. NCS can systematically design the curriculum using NCS as well as help in hiring personnel, and NCS can be applied to the national qualification system. However, in the field of industrial security, NCS has not yet been developed and is still having difficulties in hiring personnel and curriculum. Although the NCS system in the field of industrial security has not been developed, this paper proposes the industrial security NCS to solve the problem of hiring professionals later and to help the field of industrial security NCS to be established later.

  • It's difficult to check cyber attacks and the performance of a security system in a real large-scale network. Generally, a new security system or the effect of a new security attack are checked by simulation. We use SSFNet to simulate our security system and cyber attack. SSFNet is an event-driven simulation tools based on process, which has a strength to be capable of expressing a large-scale network. But it doesn't offer any API's which can manipulate not only the related function of security but also the packet. In this paper, we developed a firewall and IPS class, used for a security system, and added to them components of SSFNet. The firewall is modelled a security system based on packet filtering. We checked the function of the firewall and the IPS with network modelled as using our SSFNet. The firewall blocks packets through rules of an address and port of packets. The result of this simulation shows that we can check a status of packets through a log screen of IPS installed in a router and confirm abnormal packet to be dropped.

  • The majority of recent intrusions reveal that the attackers do not use the previous intrusion techniques or network flaw, rather they tend to use the vulnerabilities residing inside the program, which are the running programs on the system or the processes for the service. Therefore, the security managers must focus on updating the programs with lots of time and efforts. Developers also need to patch continuously to update the program, which is a lot of burden for them. In order to solve the problem, we need to understand the vulnerabilities in the program, which has been studied for some time. And also we need to analyze the functions that contains some vulnerabilities inside. In this paper, we first analyzed the vulnerabilities of the standard C library, and Win32 API functions used in various programs. And then we described the design and implementation of the automated scanning tool for writing secure source code based on the analysis.

  • Recently, various cyber threats such as Ransomware and APT attack are increasing by e-mail. The characteristic of such an attack is that it is important to take administrative measures by improving personal perception of security because it bypasses technological measures such as past pattern-based detection The purpose of this study is to investigate the human factors of employees who are vulnerable to spam mail attacks through field experiments and to establish future improvement plans. As a result of sending 7times spam mails to employees of a company and analyzing training report, It was confirmed that factors such as the number of training and the recipient 's gender, age, and workplace were related to the reading rate. Based on the results of this analysis, we suggest ways to improve the training and to improve the ability of each organization to carry out effective simulation training and improve the ability to respond to spam mail by awareness improvement.

  • Due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus in December 2019, the working environment was rapidly converted to telecommuting. However, since the defense industry is an organization that handles technology related to the military, the network separation policy is applied, so there are many restrictions on the application of telecommuting. Telecommuting is a global change and an urgent task considering the rapidly changing environment in the future. Currently, in order for defense companies to implement telecommuting, VPN, VDI, and network interlocking systems must be applied as essential elements. Eventually, some contact points will inevitably occur, which will increase security vulnerabilities, and strong security management is important. Therefore, in this paper, attack types are selected and threats are analyzed based on the attack tactics of the MITER ATT&CK Framework, which is periodically announced by MITER in the US to systematically detect and respond to cyber attacks. Then, by applying STRIDE threat modeling, security threats are classified and specific security requirements are presented.

  • Cyber attacks targeting critical infrastructure are on the rise. Critical infrastructure is defined as core infrastructures within a country with a high degree of interdependence between the different structures; therefore, it is difficult to sufficiently protect it using outdated cybersecurity techniques. In particular, the distinction between the physical and logical risks of critical infrastructure is becoming ambiguous; therefore, risk management from a comprehensive perspective must be implemented. Accordingly, as a means of further actively protecting critical infrastructure, major countries have begun to apply their security and cybersecurity systems by design, as a more expanded concept is now being considered. This proactive security approach (CSbD, Cybersecurity by Design) includes not only securing the stability of software (SW) safety design and management, but also physical politics and device (HW) safety, precautionary and blocking measures, and overall resilience. It involves a comprehensive security system. Therefore, this study compares and analyzes security by design measures towards critical infrastructure that are leading the way in the US, Europe, and Singapore. It reflects the results of an analysis of optimal cybersecurity solutions for critical infrastructure. I would like to present a plan for applying by Design.

  • With rapid development of Internet technology, business management in an organization or an enterprise depends on Internet-based technology for the most part. Furthermore, as dependency and cohesiveness of network in the communication facilities are increasing, cyber attacks have been increased against vulnerable resource in the information system. Hence, to protect private information and computer resource, research for damage propagation is required in this situation. However the proposed traditional models present just mechanism for risk management, or are able to be applied to the specified threats such as virus or worm. Therefore, we propose the probabilistic model of damage propagation based on the Markov process, which can be applied to diverse threats in the information systems. Using the proposed model in this paper, we can predict the occurrence probability and occurrence frequency for each threats in the entire system.
