Trend of sound quality development in vehicles (자동차 음질 개발 동향)

  • 자동차에서 실내음질은 구매결정 요소들 중의 하나로 그 중요성이 점차 증가하고 있다. 따라서 다양한 운전조건에서 운전자가 기대하는 실내음질의 기대 수준을 충족시켜야 한다. 소비자는 운전경험과 습관에 따라 기대하는 음질에 차이가 있고 소리에 대한 표현방식도 모호하기 때문에 이러한 주관적 특성을 하나의 통일된 표현으로 정의 하기가 어렵다. 그러나 지난 이십여 년 동안의 음질개발과 차량 실내소음 주관평가의 통계처리로 통일된 표현을 할 수 있었다. 나아가 심리음향학 및 신호처리기술의 발달과 꾸준한 음질연구결과로 소리특성을 객관적으로 나타내는 소리의 시각화가 가능하였으며, 운전자가 인식하는 주관평가와의 상관관계를 높여 차량의 대표적인 음질인자로 정량화하여 음질목표를 설정할 수 있었다. 실내소음의 구성은 엔진 투과음, 흡배기 소음, 바람 소음, 도로 기인 소음 등으로 다양하므로 소음원에 따라 음의 균형을 맞추어 조화로운 음질개발을 하는 것이 중요했다. 또한 차량 판매되는 지역에 따라 선호음이 상이하여 지역별 실내음질의 차별화가 필요했다. 궁극적으로는 운전자의 감성품질을 만족할 수 있도록 음을 제어하여 브랜드 사운드를 개발하고 있다. 이러한 실내음질을 달성하기 위한 방법으로 소음원과 전달경로에 대해 기여도를 분석하고, 경로를 구성하는 시스템 별로 세분화하여 시스템 목표를 설정하였다. 시스템 개발에 중요한 인자로 차량의 동강성 및 흡차음 성능을 들 수 있다. 특히 디젤차량의 비중이 큰 유럽업체의 차량의 동강성 및 흡차음 개발 능력은 높게 평가되고 있다. 이에 유럽의 부품전문회사가 가지고 있는 해석과 시험적인 개발 방법을 통하여 전달계 특성을 만족하기 위한 시스템의 동강성 및 흡차음 특성을 개발하고 있다. 차량음질 튜닝의 중요한 기법 중 하나로 흡배기 개발을 추진하고 있다. 친환경자동차인 하이브리드차량, 전기차량 및 연료전지차량의 경우 전기구동부품에서 발생하는 각종 이음 발생을 최소화 했다. 보행자를 보호하고 운전의 즐거움을 향상하기 위한 가상사운드 개발을 진행하고 있다. 회사 수익성 향상을 위한 원가절감 및 구조 경량화에 따른 음질악화와 연비 향상 및 배기가스 규제 강화로 고성능 고출력 엔진탑재에 따른 음질악화 요인을 극복해야 했다. 운전자의 청감은 차량의 운전성에 따라서도 크게 영향을 받게 되므로 엔진제어와 변속기제어를 통해 음질과 운전성이 조화를 이룰 수 있도록 개발하고 있다. 향후, 소음원에 따른 시스템 최적화 개발, 운전성과 음질 연계 개발과 친환경차량의 가상사운드 개발 등이 자동차 음질 개발의 중요한 이슈로 생각한다.

Subplots and Double Sound in the Film, Sweet Smell of Success (영화 <성공의 달콤한 향기>의 서브플롯과 더블 사운드)

  • The narrative of the film, Sweet Smell of Success has a multi-layered structure. In Clifford Odets's scenario work, numerous lines for the main plot and subplots repeated a cycle of creation, decomposition, deletion, and modification to enhance the density of the story. As a result, whenever an actor spoke a line or paused, an action or an event that would trigger another line was created, giving depth and persuasiveness to the character's performance. The music of Sweet Smell of Success has multi-layered elements. The non-diegetic music was covered by the orchestral pieces performed by Elmer Bernstein's big band orchestra and the jazz pieces performed by Fred Katz's combo band. The diegetic music was mostly covered by the jazz pieces performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet. The practical task of the film music was to reinforce or supplement the effect of the narrative driver, and the additional task was to realize the estrangement effect and the aesthetics of stagnation. The possibility and significance of intertextuality of subplots and double sound of this film are not simply confined to the limits of the film noir genre.

A Review of Access Conditions of the W3 and the Inline Image/Sound Processing of HTML Document for Utilizing of the Virtual Library (W3 가상도서관 활용을 위한 HTML 문서작성과 이미지/사운드 처리)

  • The information users of the middle of 1990s. who know the Internet as well as its useful information services, are now expecting the virtual library services. Especially the increasing demands on hypertext and hypermedia information in the internet settings have been centered on the W3 with the man-page information. In this manner, the paper describes the access methods with brief concepts of the W3 and explains URLs and HTML. It also gives the retrieval layouts of unformatted data including images and sounds and then provides the information sources and software of W3 Clients and Servers in order to catch up the most recently post version of W3.

New Development of Two-Dimensional Sound Quality Index for Brand sound in Passenger Cars (승용차 브랜드 사운드를 위한 이차원 음질 인덱스 개발)

  • In automotive engineering, the brand sound is one of the important advantage strategy in a car company. For the design of brand sound, the selection of descriptive word for a car sound is one of major works in automotive sound quality research. In paper, booming sound and rumbling sound, which are professional words used by NVH engineers are used for the design of brand sound. We employed sound metrics which are the subjective parameter used in psychoacoustics. According to most research results, the relationship between subjective evaluations and sound metrics has nonlinear characteristics and is very complex. In order to link these subjective evaluations to sound metrics, the artificial neural network technology has been applied to two-dimensional sound quality index for a passenger car. These indexes is used for 46 passenger cars, which are samples of famous cars in the world. Also the preference in car sounds is evaluated by the trained NVH engineers. We coupled this preference with booming and rumbling sounds by using artificial neural network. In future, the two -dimensional sound index and preference index are very useful fur the development of brand sound in passenger cars.

An Experimental Study on the Recognition Region of Passive Soundscape Facilities Especially in Fountains (자연형 사운드스케이프 요소인 분수의 인지범위에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The interaction between people and sound and the way how people consciously perceive their environment are central approach to soundscape research. In this respect, this paper aims to clarify the relationship between water-sound level and recognition region in urban area. As a passive soundscape facility, fountain is a useful way to give place such as public square, park identity and vitality. In this study, to know the optimistic distance and sound level range from fountain, sound levels due to distance were measured and subject responses were checked by questionnaire. As a result, levels from 63 dB to 67 dB were recommended by subjects and moving forward to fountain less satisfactory than backward. Moving forward 5 m and backward 5 m(total range 10 m): there was a difference in satisfaction ratio by 2,5 out of 10. The results of this study could be used for street furniture location design and P.A. system output level.

Following media development, a Study about the convergence of comics and multimedia (매체발달에 따른 만화의 멀티미디어와의 융합에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, it was witnessed that a variety of tests are implemented in a type of convergence of multimedia such as photos, sounds, and videos as well as letters and drawings, components of existing traditional comics as comics are digitalized and are converted to various devices. Therefore, we studied the concept of multimedia comics as a basis of this study by judging that new barometer to comics lies in convergence with such multimedia. After recognizing components of multimedia comics which are currently emerging, we categorized them into three types depending on how to use these elements. First, convergence type webtoon has a very similar format with existing vertical scrolling webtoon and has characteristics that background & effects sounds are added to emphasize the features of webtoon, or photos or videos are inserted in part, and there is no function to control these elements; Second, motion comic, a medium format between comic and animation has a characteristic that sound, video, paging are auto-played like watching animation but it keeps the format of comics within one frame; Third, interactive comic has a characteristic that effects sound, motion, and story are made by active participation of viewers. As a result of analyzing comics which having above multimedia characteristics, its implications are as followings: First, multimedia elements should be used depending on genre, age, and media; Second, high level of control technology considering the features of comic-viewers is needed. In other words, in continuously evolving media environments, comic contents being proper to targets and use purposes of viewers should be developed. For this, multimedia elements of comics should be used in order that comic-viewers can have active & interactive communication with contents.

  • Emotional design gets more and more important. However, the systematical approaches to integration of user experience elements in product design have been rarely tried. This study consists of three parts. We extracted affective words fitting to design direction based on trend analysis. Then, user experience elements were matched with affective words. Finally, a prototype system was made to guide designing affective factors in electronic products. In the present study, user experience elements were defined as color, material & finishing, and sound. Through various documents analysis and trend analysis, trend analysis experts and user experience designers extracted 31 affective keywords which could fully reflect current trend. After paired-comparison of selected keywords, 2 sensibility dimensions were obtained by multidimensional scaling. Trend affective keywords could be explained by 2 dimensions of human-centered' vs. 'techno-centered' and 'warm vs. cool'. Next, user experience elements stimuli were matched with each keyword by user direct positioning on the 2 dimensions affective map. Based on the result of the experiment, the prototype system was developed for the product designers. The results of the current study could guide designers to design emotionally satisfactory products.

Implementation of ARM based Embedded System for Muscular Sense into both Color and Sound Conversion (근감각-색·음 변환을 위한 ARM 기반 임베디드시스템의 구현)

  • This paper focuses on a real-time hardware processing by implementing the ARM Cortex-M4 based embedded system, using a conversion algorithm from a muscular sense to both visual and auditory elements, which recognizes rotations of a human body, directional changes and motion amounts out of human senses. As an input method of muscular sense, AHRS(Attitude Heading Reference System) was used to acquire roll, pitch and yaw values in real time. These three input values were converted into three elements of HSI color model such as intensity, hue and saturation, respectively. Final color signals were acquired by converting HSI into RGB color model. In addition, Three input values of muscular sense were converted into three elements of sound such as octave, scale and velocity, which were synthesized to give an output sound using MIDI(Musical Instrument Digital Interface). The analysis results of both output color and sound signals revealed that input signals of muscular sense were correctly converted into both color and sound in real time by the proposed conversion method.

  • In the 1960s, light art using neon or fluorescent lamp, etc and 'light and space art' appeared with kinetic art. Light art that is an extension of kinetic art tends to be digitalized art and focus on movement, while light and space art emphasizes psychological side and focuses more on phenomenal experience than movement itself. Light art generally tends to offer visual play, but light and space art offers not only visual play but also deep impression on audience's mind. In this paper, LED control method using sound and how color change influences people's mind are studied based on my works try to supplement shortcoming of light art. The main goal of my work is to make more effective and empathic interaction between audience and light in order to avoid cold and mechanical impressions that light art has. Based on its contents, this study seeks method to stimulate people's emotion, and suggests applying mentality on the color and sound interaction together to media art. In conclusion, it is believed that new model of media art is suggested through this study.
