A thermal barrier coating (TBC) prevents heat directly transferring from a high-temperature flame to a substrate. The TBC system comprises a top coating and bond coating. TBC technology reduces the substrate surface temperature by about $100{\sim}170^{\circ}C$. In the TBC system, internal stress is generated by the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate and coating. The internal stress also differs according to the shape and position of the blade. In this study, finite element analysis was performed for different curvatures of coin-shaped specimens, which are commonly used for thermal fatigue tests, and the changes in internal stress of the TBC system were compared. Based on the results, the curvature at which the minimum stress occurs was derived, and the thermal stress was confirmed to increase with the difference between a given curvature and the curvature with the minimum stress.

In this paper, the aerodynamic design process of wind turbine blades is established. The optimization design strategy is presented and the constraints that must be reviewed during the aerodynamic design process are summarized. Based on this, this study developed a BEMT-based aerodynamic optimal design program that can be applied easily to actual work, not only for research purposes, but also can be integrated from the initial concept design stage to the final 3D shape detail design stage. The developed program AeroDA consisted of a concept design module, basic design module, optimal TSR module, local shape optimization module, performance analysis module, design verification module, and 3D shape generation module. Using the developed program, an improved design of the 5MW blade by NREL was made, and it was confirmed that this program could be used for design optimization. In addition, a 10kW blade aerodynamic design and turbine detailed performance analysis were carried out, and it was verified by a comparison with the commercial program DNVGL Bladed.

Seoul National University flap(SNUF) blade is a small-scale rotor blade incorporating a small trailing-edge flap control surface driven by piezoelectric actuators at higher harmonics for vibration attenuation. Initially, the blade was designed using two-dimensional cross-section analysis and geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis, and its material configuration was finalized. A flap-deflection angle of ${\pm}4^{\circ}$ was established as the criterion for enhanced vibration reduction based on an earlier simulation. The flap-linkage mechanism was designed and static bench tests were conducted for verifying the performance of the flap-actuation mechanism. Different versions of test beds were developed and tested with the designed flap and the selected APA 200M piezoelectric actuators. Through significant improvements, a maximum deflection of ${\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ was achieved. High-frequency experiments were conducted for evaluating the performance, and the transfer function of the test bed was determined experimentally. With the static tests almost complete, the rotor power required for testing the blade in a whirl tower (centrifugal environment) was calculated, and further preparations are underway.

This paper aims to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of individual rotor for the gust and flight conditions. Transformation procedure into the wind frame is conducted to analyze the gust. Hover, forward, and climb flight conditions of an individual rotor are analyzed using the blade element momentum theory (BEMT) considering the rigid blade flapping motion. XFOIL is used to derive aerodynamic results. Validation for hover, forward flight, and climb conditions are conducted using the present BEMT. In addition, a static experimental environment is constructed. The experimental results and the present BEMT are compared and verified.

This paper deals with several statistical distribution functions for the analysis of fatigue life data of composite laminates for small wind-turbine blades. A series of tensile tests was performed on triaxial glass/epoxy laminates for loading directions of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$. Then, fatigue tests were carried out to determine the fatigue life at the aforementioned loading directions and the fatigue stresses at four levels. Two-parameter Weibull, three-parameter Weibull, normal, and log-normal distributions were used to fit the fatigue life data of the triaxial composite laminates. The three-parameter Weibull distribution most accurately described the fatigue life data measured experimentally for all the cases considered. Furthermore, the variation of fatigue life was simultaneously affected by the loading direction and fatigue stress level.

Various cooling techniques have been applied to the gas turbine blade in order to reduce heat load to the blade. On the blade surface, film cooling method is used and the accurate information of film cooling effectiveness should be evaluated in order to predict the exact temperature distribution in the blade. In this study, pressure sensitive paint (PSP) was used to measure the film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate. Results showed that PSP technique successfully evaluated the distribution of film cooling effectiveness. Three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested and the film cooling effectiveness near holes decreased as the blowing ratio increased, however, increased far downstream from the holes.

The characteristics of bearingless main rotor of helicopter are investigated through non-rotating tests and rotating tests. The stiffness and natural frequencies of rotor blades, flexbeam, and torque tube which are core components of baearingless rotor are measured to obtain input material properties for rotor analysis. The functional test on ground for assembly of one hub with damper, snubber, and no blade is carried out to check interfaces between components, kinematics of components, and pitch motion ranges under applied loads including centrifugal load. The 4-bladed bearingless rotor with 5.82m of rotor radius is tested on the whirl tower with rotation plane of 9.65m height. The thrust and power are measured to obtain hover performance and the frequencies and dampings of the rotor are obtained by excitation of cyclic pitch by hydraulic actuators.

In this study, we perform the structural analysis of a floating offshore wind turbine tower by considering the dynamic response of the floating platform. A multibody system consisting of three blades, a hub, a nacelle, the platform, and the tower is used to model the floating wind turbine. The blades and the tower are modeled as flexible bodies using three-dimensional beam elements. The aerodynamic force on the blades is calculated by the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with hub rotation. The hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and mooring forces are considered for the platform. The structural dynamic responses of the tower are simulated by numerically solving the equations of motion. From the simulation results, the time history of the internal forces at the nodes, such as the bending moment and stress, are obtained. In conclusion, the internal forces are compared with those obtained from static analysis to assess the effects of wave loads on the structural stability of the tower.
The dynamic characteristics of a ducted fan in hovering condition were investigated. The section properties of the fan blade were calculated, and a simulation model was developed according to the rotor system components. Dynamic analyses were conducted relative to the rotational speed and the collective pitch. The proposed ducted fan system showed less aero-elastic instability within the designated operating ranges. To verify the analytical approach, a rotating test stand of the ducted fan was set up. A functional test of the assembly was carried out to determine the kinematics and interference between components. The non-rotating and rotating normal frequencies were measured by excitation of the collective pitch using hydraulic actuators. The results indicated a correlation between the test equipment and the simulation model.

In this paper, the helicopter aerodynamics is simulated in hovering and forward flight. Also, an overlapped grid technique is applied in this simulation to consider the blade motion and moving effects. The Caradonna & Tung's rotor blade was selected to analyze the unsteady aerodynamics in hovering and non-lift forward flight. Also, the AH-1G rotor blade was selected in forward flight. In forward flight case, the numerical trim was applied to determine the cyclic pitching angles using Newton-Raphson method, and the numerical results were in good agreement with experimental data, especially, the BVI effects were well simulated in advancing side in comparison other numerical results. The governing equation is a three dimensional unsteady Euler equation, and the Riemann invariants condition is used for inflow and outflow at the boundary.
